FAMILY OF CHARLES KENNEDY Charles Kennedy was probably born by 1724 (see 1744 record) and died in 1786/1787 (see tax lists). He purchased 176 ac. in Louisa Co. in 1751, 100 ac. in Spots. Co. in 1754, sold the Spots. land in 1780, and owned 300 ac. in Hanover Co. He probably lived and died in Hanover Co. as he was poll taxed in that county but not in Louisa, though he owned land in both (see 1782 tax lists). Wife Croshe may have moved to Louisa Co. after his death. The early Louisa Co. tithables probably mark slaves rather than children. Charles Kennedy’s wife is Crotia (Crosha) and she could have been a Cassidy as there was a daughter Croshe Cassidy and at least two grand daughters with this name. From estimates of birth dates for the children of Charles and Crotia Kennedy it becomes apparent that they could not have been the parents of Davenport Kennedy who was born by 1730. It appears from the available records that the earliest their children were born was 1750-1755. Crotia Kennedy was living as late as 1810. Most likely Charles Kennedy and Davenport Kennedy were brothers, sons of a daughter of a Davenport (possibly Martin). The children of Charles and Crotia Kennedy include: 1. William Kennedy was born by 1762 - he is on the 1783 Hanover Co. PP Tax List with Charles as 21 and older, Dav. Kennedy’s son William was not of age in 1787. He provided security in 1789 for the guardian bond of William Davenport’s guardianship of William and Robert Kennedy, the orphans of Davenport Kennedy. His last appearance in the records may have been the 1790 bond of Dorothy Kennedy in Louisa Co. This could be the same as the William who died in Green Co., Ga. in 1793 and named a brother Fields Kennedy. William and Fields Kennedy witnessed a deed from Charles and John Davenport (sons of Richard Davenport a neighbor and possible relative) in Abbeville Co., SC in May of 1793. 2. Garrett Kennedy was 45 and older on the 1800 Louisa Co. census, which shows no children in this household. He made a will in 1796 in Louisa Co. and it was probated in 1807. He married Delphia Davenport, the daughter of William Davenport and wife Anne, in 1785. She married again on 14 Mar 1809 to Dickerson Wash. There were no children of this first marriage as Garrett left his estate to nephews. 3. Charles Kennedy left a will dated 1819 and probated 1821 in Madison Co. Ala. He moved to SC where he married Dorothy Mallory Jarrett by 1795 and had William Mallory, Charles, Crotia Cassidy Wellborn, Lexington, Fields, James, Robert, Albert, and Allen. Dorothy married first Robert Jarrett in 1785 and she was probably born c. 1765. Assume that Charles was at least as old as she. Charles Kennedy Jr. never shows up in the records of Va., however, brother Garrett names him and his first son William in his will of 1796. Dorothy Mallory Jarrett had a son Devereaux born c. 1786 and it is likely that she and Charles Kennedy were married by 1787/1788. 4. Crotia Cassidy Kennedy born by 1768 as she was “upwards of 21” when she married first on 24 Dec 1789 to Tarleton B. Luck. I interpret this to mean she was over 21 and most likely 25-30. Tarleton died in 1796 and Charles and John Davenport ack. to his heirs land sold to Luck by their father Richard Davenport. From the list of heirs, these could not have been the children of Crotia. Tarleton must have been much older and already had grown children. She married again Jan 1797 to Hezekiah Arnold. I have no records of her children, if any. She is still in Louisa Co. as late as 1801. 5. Martin Kennedy was born by 1768 since he purchased land in 1789. He left a will in Hanover Co. dated 1838 and probated 1847. He married 23 May 1793 to Frances Smith in Louisa Co. and they had Lancelot, Sarah, Frances who married Robert G. Luck, Croche C. who married Zephemiah Hall, Jane and Martin. 6. James Kennedy married 24 Sept 1790 to Barbara Smith and had at least one child Albert. James is on the 1800 Louisa Co. census age 26-45. James enlisted in Rev. War as early as 1776/1777 and achieved the rank of Lt. For more information on James see Frank Long.
