FAMILY OF DAVENPORT KENNEDY Davenport Kennedy was born by 1730 if he was 21 when he apprenticed himself as a house carpenter in 1752. He died in Louisa Co. by 11 Nov 1782 owning 100 ac. in Hanover Co. and 150 ac. in Louisa Co. His wife was Mary. Her estate was adm. in 1789 by William Davenport and in 1791 by Robert Honeyman, a physician in Hanover Co. If all the children on the 1797 settlement were of age by that date, then they were all born by 1776. To place all children, except Sarah, as born between 1759 and 1776 and to fit the available records, the following applies. (Sarah would not have to have been 21 in 1797 as her husband signed the division. She is the only one to whom this would apply as Mary was not married and would have to be 21 to sign.) 1. Dicey Kennedy married James Davenport in Louisa Co. in 1785. From a copy of Letter from Mrs. Margaret W. Longino, Palmetto, Georgia, December 25, 1920 is… (This is copied from the Family Record of our old family Bible, but the record is so torn you could not tell much about it.) My paternal grandfathers’ ancestors, the Davenports, came from England – how many of them I don’t know – but James was Grandfather’s name. I know he had one brother, but do not know if there were others. James settled in Hanover Co., Va. Later James came to Georgia and settled in Ogelthorpe Co., Ga. James Davenport and Dicy Canady were married November 29, 1785. James Davenport was born April 29, 1759. Dicy Davenport, his wife, was born June, 1759. I see no reason to doubt this information even though I don’t have the original. The marriage date is correct for the date of the marriage rather than the date of the bond. 2. Joseph Kennedy was born by 1769 to be at least 21 in 1790 when he provided security for a bond of Dorothy Kennedy. Would have been born by 1762 if he is the male age 21 and up on the 1783 tax list with Mary Kennedy. There are no guardianship records for him. Most likely was the second child and born circa 1761. 3. Nancy Kennedy was a witness at the marriage of her sister in 1785. She is not listed as needing a guardian in 1787 meaning she was too old or an error was made in the record. She died intestate by 1797. She could have been born anytime between 1763 and 1766. 4. Dorothy Kennedy chose her mother as guardian in 1787 meaning she was between age 14 and 21 (born between 1766 and 1773). On 4 Jan 1790 she executed a bond in her own name which surely shows that she was at least 21 (born by 1768). She married Ambrose Edwards 7 Jan 1790 in Louisa Co. Born 1767. 5. Robert Kennedy was appointed a guardian in 1787 and so was born between 1766 and 1773. In 1785 he was one of the witnesses at the marriage of his sister Dicey. He sold land in 1797 Louisa Co. with brother Joseph meaning he was at least 21 at this time (born by 1776). A guardian account was returned for him in 1790 meaning he was still under guardianship at this time and thus born after 1768. Born 1769/1770. 6. William Kennedy – William and Robert are always mentioned together in the records. It is likely they were close in age. Born 1770/1772. 7..Samuel Kennedy was appointed a guardian in 1787 and so was born after 1763. He may have died early as he is not again mentioned in the records. Born 1774. 8. Mary Kennedy was appointed a guardian in 1787. She is on the 1797 estate settlement as Polly/Mary Kennedy. (Polly is the nickname for Mary) Born 1775. 9. Sarah Kennedy was appointed a guardian in 1787 and so was born after 1773. She apparently went to Ga. in 1790/1791 with sister Dicey Davenport and married there in 1796 to Samuel Shannon. On the 1800 census she is listed as born between 1774 and 1784. She was most likely born 1777. MISCELLANEOUS KENNEDY RECORDS JOSEPH KENNEDY NC & VA line, soldier moved from Burke Co.
