    1. Re: [DAVENPORT] Re: Nineteenth Century Davenports of King William
    2. Jim: There were Davenports in King William County, Virginia, in the Nineteenth. Century. Peyton Neal Clarke in "Old King William Homes and Families" (1897) within the "Edwards Genealogy" (pp. 190-191) includes the family of Irenus Davenport of Walnut Hill, King William. Irenus married Anne Samuel King on 30Nov1887. Clarke gives little or no detail concerning Irenus except to note that he was the son of Isaac Davenport and Susannah Wingfield, and the grandson of Pumphrey Davenport and Elizabeth King. By my own research, Pumphrey Davenport was the son of Reuben Davenport and Rachel Crump of King William. Reuben, in turn, was the son of David Davenport, wife unknown, of Caroline. David was the son of Richard Davenport, wife unknown but believed to have been a Terry, of Caroline. Richard was one of the younger sons of Davis Davenport, the Patriarch of the Pamunkey Davenports, of King William. Davis' wife and mother of his children has not been identified. If you have not already researched the Federal Censuses of 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 for King William County, the odds would appear rather good that you will find the connection that you're looking for in that string of King William Davenports. To my knowledge, the only Davenports living in King William after the Revolution were of the line of Reuben of David. If I recall correctly, Reuben had two sons: Pumphrey and Henry. I have not read the King William censuses after 1820, for by that time my Davenports had gone to North Carolina in 1769, then north to Indiana in 1817. With all of the diverging lines of Pamunkey Davenports (descendants of Davis Davenport), as matter of policy I have not gone beyond 1820 with any lines except my own--Augustine, Sr., of Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina, son of William of Spotsylvania, Virginia. With one exception, all of Augustine's children moved north of the Ohio River by 1830. Good hunting. I will be interested in what you find. John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ
