    3. Martha, You might contact the National Archives for a search of their records. You've got initials and a state, that narrows it down considerably. Union soldier records are organized by state, last name, first name. Once you have that record, you may get other valuable information, particularly if he applied for a pension. Ask them to search both bodies of information, they are not the same set of files. The GAR sounds like it might be a reference to the post war organization "The Grand Army of the Republic" Their successor organization, the Sons of Union Veterans, might have something on him as well. Both entities are online and have links to further information. Just don't have the URL's at my fingertips. Use a good search engine and you'll find them.
