    1. As to: Fields Kennedy, and Joseph Kennedy and Pamunkey Davenports in Albemarle
    2. Skid: I, too, have continued to work on the Kennedys, concurrent with my Pamunkey Davenport research. Charles Kennedy, Jr., whatever his Revolutionary service was (I, too, believe that he served in the Virginia Continental Line), found the Widow Jarrett among the Pamunkey Davenports (families of Thomas D., Mary D. Gambill, and Dorothy D. Baker, all children of Martin, sr., of Hanover), in Western North Carolina before moving on South. Charles, Jr., apparently went directly to North Carolina after his Revolutionary service. As to Fields Kennedy, son of Charles, Jr., being the one who enlisted in the Regular Army during the War of 1812, the evidence indicates that it was Fields, brother of Charles, Jr., for the age 38 is a stated fact from the extracted enlistment record. A major finding, yet to be fully developed, is that fact that Joseph Kennedy, eldest son and heir-at-law of Davenport Kennedy, located in Charlottesville, Albemarle County, by 1792 and remained there until 1820, at least. He never lived on that 92+ acres he was deeded in Louisa County, but was closely allied, at least in the 1790s, with William and Jesse Davenport, sons of James Davenport, Sr., son of Martin, Sr., in Charlottesville. Joseph Kennedy has a high profile in Albemarle Court records of the 1790s as a juror (including being appointed jury foreman for several trials, including one where Thomas Jefferson was the defendant), a businessman litigant--suing and being sued, and as a jail guard. His activity level, except as a guard for felony charged prisoners, dropped rapidly after he ceased to be a freeholder, i.e., landowner in Louisa County, in 1797. Thereafter, he appeared consistently on the Albemarle Personal Property Tax List through 1820, gone thereafter--either dead, excused from taxation, or had moved away. At no time, 1792-1820, was Joseph assessed for more than a tithe-poll tax and a horse (rarely), indicating that he accumulated no taxable wealth over twenty-eight years. Court records indicate Joseph's Charlottesville associations were tight with William Davenport particularly, and Jesse Davenport, less so but nevertheless frequent, in the 1790s. He had no record associations with the Richard Davenport, Sr., who died the same year that Joseph appeared in Albemarle, nor with Richard, Sr.'s identified family, who were in St. Ann's Parish (southern Albemarle), while Charlottesville where William, Jesse, and Joseph were located was in Frederickville Parish (northern Albemarle). I still have at least twenty years of Albemarle Court records to research, but am in the middle of Marriage Bond research at the moment, so there is much concerning Joseph, eldest son of Davenport Kennedy, yet to be learned. When Joseph Kennedy disappeared from Albemarle tax records, he was in his middle 50s with most, if not all, of his life spent. Davenport research in Albemarle is being redone because the Pamunkey history there heretofore circulated does not agree with what the records indicate. William Davenport, son of James, Sr., went to Albemarle most likely because he was a millwright apprentice to Henry Gambill, Jr., a first cousin as well as an uncle, who was married to Catherine Jouett. (William's mother was Frances Jouett, elder sister of Catherine.) Henry's mother was Mary Davenport, eldest daughter of Martin, Sr. The Davenport-Jouett relationship badly needs review and an ironing out--it was not what has heretofore been portrayed. The fact that Joseph Kennedy was mixed up in Davenport-Jouett milieu (which was done in Albemarle by 1807) adds spice to the search--with the Davenport-Kennedy presence continuing in Charlottesville and the Richard Davenport, Sr., family active in the south of the County until 1820 and beyond. If we keep turning over rocks, we'll get some serendipity I'm sure--like stumbling across Joseph Kennedy in Albemarle. (I've also stumbled across him in Henrico County in 1782 while tracing down Martin Davenport, son of John, Sr., son of Martin, Sr., but that was the front end of Joseph's life, before Davenport Kennedy's death.)
