My in-laws are from ALA, came to OK through AR and of my father-in-law's generation, two of them spell it DAvenport, and the rest spell it DEvenport. The two who changed it to DA were "helped" by the CCC people when they signed up for service. They were illiterate. The generation before them, I suspect will be a mixed spelling also.
