BODY {font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt;} Hello List: I have added a new page to the >http://www.DavenportDNA.com site called "Davenport Lines". I need your help. In order to get a "true" representative DNA sample from each Davenport line we need more than one test subject per line. Ideally we should get a sample from each of the major branches for each line. Using my ancestor as an example - Thomas of Dorchester. Thomas had four sons that lived to adulthood - Charles, Jonathan, Ebenezer, and John. I would try to find a descendant from each of those sons. In another line - The Rev. John Davenport had one son. So we could look down a generation and look at John Jr.'s sons. The rationale for this is simple. Each of the lines we are tracking is at least 10-15 generations long. In those hundreds of years and thousands of fathers - if any of them had an illegitimate child, adoption, name change, etc.. and that son carried on the Davenport name - then the DNA would be different. It may be that we tested the one branch that had an "event" and it would not be a true representative of that line. So by testing the other branches we can find a "baseline" or standard for that line. The new "Davenport Lines" link is an attempt to decide where we should focus our efforts. It lists each of the major lines in the USA and then the sons I would like to channel down through. I have highlighted the branches we have covered. This is by no means saying we don't want "covered" branches tested any more. We want as many of each as possible. Since I am not the "authority" on any of these lines - I need you to look at this new page and tell me what I missed. >http://davenportdna.com/lines.htm< If I left out a son, or a son died without offspring, or you can supply some dates, or even if you think I left out a line - let me know at [email protected] So far we have 17 participants with results in for ten. Thanks for your help. Bill Davenport [email protected] Davenport Surname DNA Project Administrator
Bill - Mailed my DNA kit April 28. I agree with your latest circular letter, about closing loopholes and firming our consensus on confidence levels. We can never enjoy 100% certainty in 100% of our genealogical "facts," but now is the time to focus on setting and defining confidence levels. When I took (and barely passed!) statistical quality control methods 30-some years ago, we used technology that has since been swept away by advances in computers. (Seen a slide-rule lately?) But one thing hasn't changed: if you want a specific (say, 98%) AOQL, only you can define various confidence levels. I keep marveling at the Davenport "lines". I've only been researching the family tree seriously since last July, admittedly, but so far find more impenetrable thickets than "lines." I'll frankly be surprised if my DNA results place me squarely in any one line - Rev. John Davenport's or anybody else's. (I've become skeptical of family folklore - the more venerable, the more questionable.) Of course, should that happen, I'll be delighted. But, eventually, the DNA will place us somewhere in the overall Davenport horde. I have no doubt there are kinsmen out there, equally eager to make the connection. On that last note: For months now, I've been running into a brick wall with my grandfather, Francis Marion Davenport, of Sherman, Texas. Born 1893, served in the Navy before and during WWI, stationed at old Brooklyn Navy Yard 1917-1919. Married twice; first wife's name unk. Second marriage, 1918 or '19, to Grace Alma Schmidt of Highland Falls, NY. Wedding probably in the city (Brooklyn or Manhattan). Returned to Texas with bride. Son Francis Jr. born in Sherman Sep 1919. Returned to Highland Falls in time for birth there of second son, David, in 1922. Marriage ended in divorce in the 1930s. Grace and the two boys stayed in Highland Falls with her extended family until about WWII. Family names, inter alia, Schmidt, Fischang, Schroegler, Bierholtz. Francis senior (my grandfather) largely drops out of sight after that. His parents were James David Davenport, b. Georgia, and Nancy Dickens, b. Kentucky. Other siblings include brothers Mark, b. 1906-1910; John Allen,C b. 1905; Robert E. Lee; and Rice Maxey; and sister Fannie Mae. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, April 29, 2003 11:39 AM Subject: [DAVENPORT] Need to identify Davenports > BODY {font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt;} > > > > > Hello List: > > I have added a new page to the >http://www.DavenportDNA.com site called > "Davenport Lines".
