Well, with my variant surname spelling (DEVENPORT), for years I thought surely all "Devenports" must be related. Now, with more experience under my belt, I see all sorts of origins for the name, other than common ancestry: -There are Devenports a-plenty, both from the North and the South. Some seem to originate from New England roots and some seem to originate elsewhere. One could suspect innocently that they might all trace back to a common origin, but what with census/government worker misspellings, semi-literate family and personal misspellings and variations, who knows, until it is all traced out? Names seem to originate from location, occupation, and "owner/ruler". We have, in our family, a semi-typical legend that, somewhere back in time, we all were "Davenports". The fuzzy story is that our ancestor got tired of "getting his mail mixed up" with his nearby relatives, and began to spell his name Devenport to cure it... as though that would make much difference with the mail system "then" OR now. In my short (56-year) lifetime, I have seen some of my uncles and cousins occasionally spell their name Davenport, usually for reasons of convenience in dealing with the public. I have had my own name listed with both spellings in the phone book, while self employed, to ensure customers could find me with either spelling. My US Army records, of course, tend to spell it both ways, with occasional variants depending on the sloppiness of the clerk typing the records. One learns to look around, spelling wise, in such records. But to assume we are all related, just because we share a close (or even the EXACT) name.... I'm a doubter. Sorry. In fact, most lines seem to be unrelated. Thomas Davenport of Dorchester seems to be the one with the most connections to other lines. Boy I (ain't) never have been accused of being from the south before. Or even thought about it. My G Grandfather (Absolam B) fought them Grey backs an was wounded in Battle Of Parkers Grove. Thats fight talk-- I don't even like to look towards the south.. Also think some of the spelling dif was due to education--some census takers were not very good spellers. Also some folks were not spelling Bee winners . Wish I had funds for the DNA test or it was free. . ----- Original Message ----- From: "Devenport, Jim" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, June 19, 2003 12:37 PM Subject: RE: [DAVENPORT] A "Must Read" For All Davenport Researchers > Well, with my variant surname spelling (DEVENPORT), for years I thought > surely all "Devenports" must be related. > Now, with more experience under my belt, I see all sorts of origins for the > name, other than common ancestry: > -There are Devenports a-plenty, both from the North and the South.
