    1. [DAVENPORT] A "Must Read" For All Davenport Researchers
    2. A Challenge For All Davenport's Hello everyone, There's been something on my mind lately, actually it's been eating away at me for some time. As most of you already know, myself and my cuzzin Butch, who is also my site/research partner; descend from Humphrey Davenport born circa 1600. Humphrey had sons, the one's we're aware of so far are: Humphrey Jr born 1656, William born 1664 and a son whom we're not sure if his name was Richard or Charles Richard, we believe to have been born circa mid 1600's. We have descendants for Humphrey Jr and William. We have nothing on this Richard. On our site, we have some Davenport family lines, from the south, who claim their furthest back ancestor to be Richard Davenport born circa 1642. They seem unable, to date, to connect this Richard to anyone as his father. Here's the fun part.... I have documented proof that Humphrey born circa 1600 was on the Cape Fear (North Carolina) expedition. I have copies of the ships logs dated for during that time period. Humphrey (and we assume his family) was in North Carolina for years. I have many documents that a very generous man sent me. These documents are papers he used to write and publish a book relating to the Cape Fear Settlement and his family history. A sort of census was found, it was actually a Court Order requiring all male inhabitants of the region of Scuppernong River to be listed. Records convincingly indicate the actual date of this to be 1717 or 1718. It was divided into two groups, the west side and the east side of Scuppernong River. This list is as follows: West Side of River- John Davenport, Rich'd Davenport, Godfrey Spruell, Sam'll Spruell, Joseph Spruill, Chas. Craddock, Jose. Bateman, Sam'll Hopkins, Ro. Fewox, Tho. Winne, Jno. Swain, Jose Fisher, Hen. Norman, Matt Caswell, La. Alexander, Jno Hopkins, Will Tarkington, Will West. East Side of River- An. Alexander, Ben Alexander, Jos. Alexander, Josh Alexander, Jno. Jennett Sr, Jno. Jennett, Jos. Canings, ___Bateman, Josh Ward, John Hassell, Ed. Hassell, Jno. Hassell Sr The challenge and the questions on my mind.... Is Rich'd and John mentioned above as inhabitants of the west side of Scuppernong River actually sons or grandsons of Humphrey born circa 1600, whom we know to have been in North Carolina at that time? Is this same Richard the head of those southern lines that can go no further back? Is this Richard the same Richard as our Richard (or Charles Richard) that we can find no descendants for? Does this mean that ALL Davenport's, no matter where they're from, are actually related, as I've been saying since the day I began my Davenport research? Does anyone have any further clues, proof, or thoughts on this? The Challenge... Butch and I are looking forward to working with each and everyone of you on this and ALL Davenport related research. Please get involved, let's gather all information we can find and put this family together as it should be. I'd also like to welcome back my cuzzin and research/sites partner, Robert "Butch" Devenport. Butch had taken some time off due to illness. Well, now he's back, raring to go and just as fiesty as ever. A truer Davenport I've never seen. Hoping to hear from you all.....Cuzzin Teri Teri Dimmett [email protected] Butch Devenport [email protected] The Davenport Family: http://www.DavenportFamily.1colony.com

    3. Cuzzin Teri, After reading 20 plus messages replying to your "MUST READ", and after 40 years of research, I would still like to Jump the Puddle and claim relation to Orme's line but - I have no proof of a connection. Sure, I am surrounded with 40 years of paper;paper;paper - but with all that the only sure thing to date that comfirms what I currently have in all of my paper work, is my DNA matches with someone else back to our Dorchester Ancestor. Where do we go from here ???????? I agree that the spelling of our name seems at the mercy of whom ever chooses to write it, but lets all pull together, Paper wise for Teri - but also support for the DNA project.
