    1. [DAVENPORT] DNA Test Results - December 25, 2006

    3. The results of a several more tests for the Davenport DNA Surname Project have arrived. We are trying to get DNA samples from all of the branches of the various Davenport lines around the world to see how we are related. For more information and to see the results go to >http://www.DavenportDNA.com< So far we have 112 participants with results in for 90. --------------- The first results come from kit # 70003. His Davenport ancestry took him back to Charles Lewis Davenport (abt 1805 - 1848 TN). Then William > Charles > Charles. He was unable to place his branch within the Pamunkey's and believed he was part of the James River group instead. The James River Davenports include several, presumably related, Davenport branches that settled in the James River area of Prince George County, Virginia in the 1600-1700's. Doc reviewed 70003's tree and supported the possible James River origin. So, now that we had our first James River participant, we used some of the donations to the DNA fund to help pay for a portion of his test. When the results came in - he did not match any other tested line. This was not completely unexpected since we weren't sure where the James River group might fit in. So barring any surprises, we now know they are not part of the Pamunkey line, or any other line discovered so far. However, he did match one of our other participants. Kit # 41293 tested last year and at the time did not match any other Davenports. This happens to about 10% of our participants, but many do go on and find connections later as the project has grown. Kit # 41293, now our second James River Davenport, traces his line to: William > William (1805 VA - 1856 MO) > Horace > William. The two participants are currently looking for a common link. ---------------- The next set of results came from kit # N34998. The "N" in his number stands for National - as in National Geographic. Last year, National Geographic, IBM, and others partnered with our testing company Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) in a major study testing DNA from populations from around the world. It is too involved to go into here, so here is a link for more information: >https://www3.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/index.html< One of the extra features allows those who participate in the study to transfer their results to surname projects, and also surname participants to transfer their results to the study. N34998 was one of those transfers from the study to the Davenport Surname project. Another "difference" is that he is a Danforth. Back in colonial days, especially in Boston, there were both Davenport and Danforth immigrants. Often spelling wasn't important, so the record keepers tended to replace Davenport with Danforth and vice versa. And of course there were several other variations. One individual might have his name spelled Damport in one sentence, Danforth in another, and finally end up as Davenport. At the beginning of the Davenport DNA project, we decided to include Danforth's "just in case", and also because no Danforth project existed. Anyway, he doesn't match anyone yet. He could well be a legitimate Danforth, we can't tell. There are no others to compare to yet. We do know that he doesn't match any Davenport line tested so far. ---------------- The third participant - kit # 72415 - is a Humphrey descendent - Humphrey > Humphrey > Humphrey > Cornelius > Nathan > Oscar > Frank > etc.. He had the typical Humphrey Y-DNA, however he also had a mutation the others did not. (Mutations are neither good nor bad. They are just random changes in the markers we test). As I was preparing this report, I noticed that he shares this mutation with another Humphrey confirmed participant but with less certain ancestry. Kit # 68055 goes back to Mahlon (abt 1797 NJ - 1849) > Abraham > Robert > etc... There is a good chance that Mahlon comes from the Cornelius branch. When we receive the results from a descendent of Nathan's brother - Enas - then we may be able to pinpoint it further. ---------------- The final participant, kit # 74561, can only go back a couple generations. His father was born in Philadelphia and his grandparents were William Joseph Davenport and Sarah Ellen Touley. His Haplogroup (major Y-DNA category) is J2, but no other Davenport tested to date is J2. This means no connection in any recent genealogical time frame. His grandmother's family came from Ireland, so that may present a clue. As we expand and obtain more European samples, he may get a hit. ------------------ One final announcement. Our testing company is offering a limited number of discounts (about 15% off) to each surname project. We still have a couple available. The offer expires December 31, 2006. So, if you are interested in ordering a test - please contact me as soon as possible. ------------------ This and all previous reports can be seen on the News page at >http://www.DavenportDNA.com< If anyone would like to join the DNA project or has any questions please contact me.
