Veterans Day upholds a longstanding American tradition that began when Gen. George Washington acknowledged the "debt of gratitude" the country owed its troops who served in the Continental Army. Early this morning, I had the privilege of participating in the 21-gun salute to our fallen veterans that was performed by the American Legion Honor Guard, of which I am a member [I was one of the riflemen this time], in the Veterans Section of Nevada's oldest cemetery at Dayton, Nevada. Later, beginning at 11:11 AM, our American Legion Color Guard led the Veterans Day Parade down the main street of Virginia City. Regret to disappoint, but we didn't recognize even a single small point of possible connection in your careful, thoroughly drawn outline of lineage. We are Pamunkeys, who are for the most part apparently deep-dyed southerners firmly rooted in Dixie. The Pamunkeys' origin as a genealogical line was in coastal Virginia in the early/mid 18th century. Over the next couple of centuries, they moved en masse through the Carolinas and Georgia, and before and after the Civil War many more jerked up stakes and headed out to Texas. A few oddities, like my grandfather, a devout southerner who nevertheless married a German yankee from the Big Apple and followed her to re-settle in NY state. If there's anything there that connects with your line, just point it out and we'll happily aid you in pursuing itl But it looks like the cupboard's bare. ----- Original Message ----- From: <davenport-request@rootsweb.com> To: <davenport@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, October 26, 2006 3:15 AM Subject: DAVENPORT Digest, Vol 1, Issue 17 > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Do you have her addresses, snail and e-mail? I have lost both. If you think she will not mind I'd like to have both. I saw some census reports that were taken in the mid 1800s in Mountaintown. There were a number of Davenports there at that census time. Mt grandparents were apparently living there at one time. I felt so strange standing on ground that they no doubt walked on between where they lived and Ellijay. Oddly that is where we were visiting when we were there in '98. I was visiting a newfound cousin Ray Wells. I wrote him around Christmas and it was returned Undeliverable. I got the strange feeling that something dire had happened with him. Do you know who I am talking about? Ray was so generous with his time and was a help to me. ----- Original Message ----- From: D Davenport<mailto:ddavenp706@hotmail.com> To: davenport@rootsweb.com<mailto:davenport@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 09, 2006 6:16 AM Subject: Re: [DAVENPORT] William David Davenport and Margaret Ramey Thanks. Consult the book of Maribeth Lang Vineyard and Eugene Wiseman, "William Wiseman and the Davenports, Pioneers of Old Burke County, North Carolina," (Franklin, NC: Genealogical Publishing Service, 1997), which lays out those Wisemans, Davenports, and Whites from Culpeper in a substantial, albeit occasionally disorganized manner and need of better research. Our Pamunkey Davenport 5-Generation Chart, see website, identifies the ancestry concerned. The Vineyard-Wiseman book has its good and not so good spots, but would be helpful in identifying and setting the historical context of who was who and when. Can be obtained from Maribeth Lang Vineyard, 486 Eagle Vista Drive, Henderson, NV 80012. Don't know the price, for she sent me a copy in exchange for "The Pamunkey Davenports of Colonial Virginia," our first publication in 1998. The book is a finely published work of almost 600 pages, reflects the research of a number of family members on a number of lines. Most of what I have on the Davenports from William David came from, I believe, Angela Groenhout, the very nice lady I mentioned earlier. SOOOOO take what I send you for what it might be worth and NOT NECESSARILY AS THE GOSPEL, DOCUMENTED FACTS. I believe what I have is accurate for the overwhelming most part because it has come from different sources, and mostly from Dr John Scott Davenport, whom I consider a great researcher and confirmed by others. I also was impressed with the Angela Groenhout data because I saw her question many items as to source and so forth. I, too, have been down the road of errors and I think it's an injustice for data to be distributed with errors in it. I will send you some of what I have, as long as you know the caveat. To Doc & All, I have tried unsuccessfully to find out where my Stephen Pierce Davenport, son of Joseph A. & Lucy A. Carter, was born and where he married Susan Jane George b:1851. I had her parents as Levi George & Elizabeth Jane Franklin, however my research has led me to believe that this is incorrect. That is what my parents had on the original family tree I started with years ago. They probably got this info from Davenport relatives, my great-grandfather, Stephen's son, and his siblings. The story is that Stephen & Susan, left NC around 1880 and headed north. They had some of their 8 children in NC, buried one on the way, and the rest were born here in Howard Co., IN where I live today. If anyone has any info on this line, which goes back to Davis, I would greatly appreciate filling in the blank spots. Thanks Tam

Davenport #58147 mentioned below? I believe that he is the brother of my Clarissa H. Davenport born circa 1805. I would like to correspond with him if he is agreeable to this. I have lost Letitia Wharton Davenport, wife of Thomas Davenport, after the 1830 Census in Lauren's District, South Carolina. Does anyone on this site know any thing further about her? Thomas mentions her in his will (wife Litty) but does not name their minor children. Charlene Moss
