    3. Thank you Dr John for this is my other Davenport line Samuel, son of George of Amelia, had four brothers: William, John, George, and Abraham. The latter three were all minors when their father died. Daughters named were Susannah Featherstone, Ann, Mary, and Sarah. Susannah Featherstone is mine Janet Ariciu -------Original Message------- From: JSDDOC@aol.com Date: 12/25/06 16:02:34 To: davenport@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [DAVENPORT] For You Davenport-Terrentine Descendants LackingRoots ID Folks: In re: Samuel Davenport, m. Turrentine, Orange County, NC. Circumstantially, he most likely was Samuel, eldest son of George Davenport of Amelia County, VA. Only one Samuel has been found in Southside Virginia prior to Revolution. Namely Samuel of George of Amelia. Samuel of George was a vagabond of sorts, left tracks in Amelia, Halifax, Nottoway, and Chesterfield records in Virginia, subsequently Granville and Orange counties, North Carolina--all in sequence, no Sam in two places at the same time. Under Colonial Virginia Law in effect when his father died in Amelia (subsequently Nottoway) in 1772, Samuel, as eldest son, had the right to nullify any disposals of land made by his father as devisements, but all lands were subject to Widow's Dower. Samuel was old enough to vote in 1768, when he did so in Halifax County. He was the last child mentioned in his father's LW&T probated in Amelia in 1773 wherein he was essentially cut off--which George did, willing his land to his four younger sons, three of them minors, but could not do by Law. Samuel had preemption. Sam next appeared in 1776 when he and John Story advertised that they had rented a fulling mill in Chesterfield County. In 1778 his widowed mother Sarah and Thomas Gunn, prior to getting married, bought out the interests and claims of Samuel and his sister Susannah to the Estate of George Davenport, Decd., for three slaves and all of the Mother's personal estate (not detailed). This affirms Samuel's role as eldest son and heir-at-law, and eliminated the claim of the eldest daughter and her husband. In 1782 Samuel was tax listed in Amelia. In 1791 Samuel was in Granville County, North Carolina. (I did not pursue him into North Carolina after I disqualified him relative to being a Pamunkey.) In 1809, Patsey Davenport, daughter of Samuel, was married to James Johnston, Jr., in Charlotte County, Virginia, James Johnston, Sr., bondsman In 1794 Matthew Davenport, clearly identifiable as a Prince George Davenport, had married Polly Johnston, daughter of James Johnston, Jr., in Charlotte. George Davenport, father of Samuel, is clearly identifiable as a Prince George Davenport. His father was also a George Davenport, who died in Prince George County in 1739, and his father was likely another George Davenport, who died in Prince George County c1712. In order to keep Pamunkey identifications straight, research in Charlotte and Campbell counties included both Pamunkeys and Prince Georges in self defense. Samuel, son of George of Amelia, had four brothers: William, John, George, and Abraham. The latter three were all minors when their father died. Daughters named were Susannah Featherstone, Ann, Mary, and Sarah. Thomas Gunn moved to Lincoln County, North Carolina, before 1790, as I recall correctly and William, John, Abraham, George Davenport all appeared in records there subsequently. I encountered them thirty years ago when I was doing research on German-speaking Pietists in 18th Century North Carolina. In North Carolina the Davenports from Amelia/Nottoway located in a predominately German ancestry settlement on the South Fork of the Catawba. There's a great deal of data relative to the Prince George Davenports yet to be found, both in Virginia and points South and West. I seem to recall that I laid out most of this out to a Davenport-Turrentine descendant five or so years ago. This is not a hard proven line, but it has a great deal of circumstance and a number of proven links in its favor. I have an 87-page data file wherein I developed the rationale of the James River-Prince George Davenports and includes all of the data cited herein as well as the Lancelot Davenport possible relationship to the James River Davenport, the Prince George Davenports most likely being an offshoot thereof. All documented, of course. An early version is posted on Nevada Jack's website, I think--it was at least six years ago. 3. I am from the Newberry line of Davenports: Francis b. 1651 in Salford, England > Isaac b. 1693 in Burlington Co., New Jersey> Francis b . abt. 1725 in Pennsylvania> James b. 1754 in Granville, North Carolina> Charles b. 1782 in Newberry Co., South Carolina> Sarah Caroline b. 1824 in Alabama and married to Taliaferro Lang Scogin b . 1809 in South Carolina. As a holiday present to any Davenport longing for a white Christmas, I will gladly send you as much snow as you would like to complete your "warm fuzzy feeling" free of charge --except for postage and probably some dry ice to keep the wet snow from melting until you receive it. Since the UPS (and all other mail servers) are still digging out themselves, not all packages have arrived here in Denver in time for Christmas, nor have all of our presents sent out arrived at their destinations. From what I understand from the news, there are still people waiting at DIA trying to get to their Christmas destinations! Fourth largest blizzard on record came blowing through on Wednesday and Thursday! As we had just shoveled our way to a limited freedom of travel on Christmas Eve for Church services, the snow began falling once more, luckily only flurries this time. It is really beautiful, in a Christmas card sort of way --and this is where we hope to see it next year--on a Christmas card! Hope everyone is enjoying a safe and warm time with friends and families and will have a healthy 2007! And remember, I really, really am serious! Free snow! Free snow! Did I mention that you are more than welcome to bring your snow shovels and collect it yourselves? Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Jane Limerick Monroe

    1. [DAVENPORT] Connecticut Davenport's - Can Anyone Help
    2. Wyatt Kopp
    3. Dear Friends: I am seeking any information on the Davenport family from Connecticut. My Davenport brick wall is William Davenport who was born January 8, 1816. He married Almira Sanders. William Davenport died on August 21, 1900 and is buried with his wife in Union Cemetery in East Lyme, Connecticut. Now, I know William belonged to the Montville Center Congregational Church in his elder years. I also know that when William Davenport died, the person who posted the bond as surety with the probate court was Lewis Brainard. I believe Brainard was married to William Davenport's sister who I think would be Frances. Does anyone have any information on a Frances Davenport who married Lewis Brainard or even information on Lewis Brainard? The Montville Vital Records list William Davenport's parents as William Davenport (father) and it lists only his mother's place of birth as Franklin, Connecticut. Does anyone know of any such Davenport's in Connecticut? This is a brick wall because East Lyme's Vital Records burned in a fire. Montville has records, but the details are somewhat not well kept even though Connecticut records are usually quite well kept. I know William and Almira had four daughters, Eleano Davenport who married Albert Rudd. Myra J. Davenport who married Charles Clark. According to the headstones in Union Cemetery, Charles Clark was born in 1850 and died in 1937. They were marrie in Montville, Connecticut on June 21, 1874. Myra Davenport was born in 1845 and died in 1894. Does anyone have the dates of deaths for Myra Davenport and Charles Clark? Among William's other daughters were Lydia Ann Davenport, but I have no information on her. Also, it appears from the Montville Vital Records that Julia A. Davenport was also William's daughter. She married James D. Snow in Montville, Connecticut on August 25, 1872. She died Oct. 1912, but I am not so sure that she is in deed William's daughter based on the death notice I saw. Moreover, she is not listed in the household in the 1850 census, but Lydia and Eleanor are lsited. Even though Myra is not listed in the census, she is buried next to William and Almira. Doesw anyone have any information on Julia Davenport or James D. Snow? I would appreciate anyone's help. Sincerely, Wyatt Kopp Merry Christmas all! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

    1. [DAVENPORT] DNA Test Results - December 25, 2006
    2. WBDave
    3. The results of a several more tests for the Davenport DNA Surname Project have arrived. We are trying to get DNA samples from all of the branches of the various Davenport lines around the world to see how we are related. For more information and to see the results go to >http://www.DavenportDNA.com< So far we have 112 participants with results in for 90. --------------- The first results come from kit # 70003. His Davenport ancestry took him back to Charles Lewis Davenport (abt 1805 - 1848 TN). Then William > Charles > Charles. He was unable to place his branch within the Pamunkey's and believed he was part of the James River group instead. The James River Davenports include several, presumably related, Davenport branches that settled in the James River area of Prince George County, Virginia in the 1600-1700's. Doc reviewed 70003's tree and supported the possible James River origin. So, now that we had our first James River participant, we used some of the donations to the DNA fund to help pay for a portion of his test. When the results came in - he did not match any other tested line. This was not completely unexpected since we weren't sure where the James River group might fit in. So barring any surprises, we now know they are not part of the Pamunkey line, or any other line discovered so far. However, he did match one of our other participants. Kit # 41293 tested last year and at the time did not match any other Davenports. This happens to about 10% of our participants, but many do go on and find connections later as the project has grown. Kit # 41293, now our second James River Davenport, traces his line to: William > William (1805 VA - 1856 MO) > Horace > William. The two participants are currently looking for a common link. ---------------- The next set of results came from kit # N34998. The "N" in his number stands for National - as in National Geographic. Last year, National Geographic, IBM, and others partnered with our testing company Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) in a major study testing DNA from populations from around the world. It is too involved to go into here, so here is a link for more information: >https://www3.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/index.html< One of the extra features allows those who participate in the study to transfer their results to surname projects, and also surname participants to transfer their results to the study. N34998 was one of those transfers from the study to the Davenport Surname project. Another "difference" is that he is a Danforth. Back in colonial days, especially in Boston, there were both Davenport and Danforth immigrants. Often spelling wasn't important, so the record keepers tended to replace Davenport with Danforth and vice versa. And of course there were several other variations. One individual might have his name spelled Damport in one sentence, Danforth in another, and finally end up as Davenport. At the beginning of the Davenport DNA project, we decided to include Danforth's "just in case", and also because no Danforth project existed. Anyway, he doesn't match anyone yet. He could well be a legitimate Danforth, we can't tell. There are no others to compare to yet. We do know that he doesn't match any Davenport line tested so far. ---------------- The third participant - kit # 72415 - is a Humphrey descendent - Humphrey > Humphrey > Humphrey > Cornelius > Nathan > Oscar > Frank > etc.. He had the typical Humphrey Y-DNA, however he also had a mutation the others did not. (Mutations are neither good nor bad. They are just random changes in the markers we test). As I was preparing this report, I noticed that he shares this mutation with another Humphrey confirmed participant but with less certain ancestry. Kit # 68055 goes back to Mahlon (abt 1797 NJ - 1849) > Abraham > Robert > etc... There is a good chance that Mahlon comes from the Cornelius branch. When we receive the results from a descendent of Nathan's brother - Enas - then we may be able to pinpoint it further. ---------------- The final participant, kit # 74561, can only go back a couple generations. His father was born in Philadelphia and his grandparents were William Joseph Davenport and Sarah Ellen Touley. His Haplogroup (major Y-DNA category) is J2, but no other Davenport tested to date is J2. This means no connection in any recent genealogical time frame. His grandmother's family came from Ireland, so that may present a clue. As we expand and obtain more European samples, he may get a hit. ------------------ One final announcement. Our testing company is offering a limited number of discounts (about 15% off) to each surname project. We still have a couple available. The offer expires December 31, 2006.
