    1. [DAVENPORT-L] Indiana Davenports
    2. I joined the list just a couple of days ago and tonight I decided I should see if I have any relatives out there. I've just started and don't have a lot of information at the moment, but I hope to change that soon... what I have is... My great grandmother was Laura F. Davenport. (Haven't been able to find what that "F" stands for yet. Born 18 July 1886 in Elkhart, Elkhart, Indiana to Noah M. Davenport (born August 1852 in Elkhart, Elkhart, Indiana) and Susanah B. Greenawalt (born 8 May 1852 in Ashland, Ohio). Noah's father, I believe, was Martin Davenport (born 1827 in Elkhart) who married Martha Miller (born 1831 in Elkhart) 5 June 1851. Do either of these names ring a bell? Ginger.... seeking J*O*H*N*S*O*N, S*U*T*T*O*N, W*I*L*S*O*N, G*R*AV*E*S, F*L*O*R*E*N*C*E, R*U*T*H, D*A*V*E*N*P*O*R*T, W*H*I*T*I*N*G

    2. Yes, I do. at the time I talked to her, she was not using a computer. If you will give me your address for U.S. mail, I'll send it to you . She works at the library there. I don't feel I should give out her address over the internet. I called her in the evening. Ellen Eanes in Idaho

    2. Bob, I did not answer your question about Beekes. If Francis is from N.J. then Beeks possibly is , too. I have never done any N.J. research, yet that Beeks name sticks in my mind. I only found the name in Francis Davenport's will but other pages from books have Davenport stuff and I was not searching for that name. I'll keep it in mind the next time I go to the FHC near me. 2. I don't but probably should. My Davenports have all the Newberry names for males but I don't know if any went to Ky or Tn, so I have not really tried to trace the ones who left. I am still stuck in N.O. and have to go backward insteadof forward. . When looking at Mississippi, the DAvenports there seem to have a S.C. background. Doc seemed to think a Francis came from N.J. Did you see the discussions in the last 6 mo or so? Maybe you can find them in the Archives if you go to the Pamunkey. page. I'll check to see if I printed it out and it is lurking someplace. I have been concentrating on Va because my Great grandfather said in every census that his father was born in Va and his mother in Tn. Ellen Eanes in Idaho

    2. Anne, In a letter to a Caroline on 28, Sept, 1998, Doc Davenport speaks of a James Madison Davenport born in 1815. He tells Carolyn that the James Madison Davenport cited by the DAR was actually James Davenport Jr. , son of James Davenport Sr. and Frances Jouett. They used the James Jr's service record. Let me see if I saved that letter on the computer. I Printed it out. Actually, the time frame seems wrong for the James Madison Davenport-b. 1815 to have been the son of Francis who was a Tory during the Rev. war. This would make Francis upwards of 65 in 1815. what do you think? I'll look in my file for that letter. Ellen Eanes in Idaho

    3. I'd like to add my two cents. The "primary" evidence is no better than the clerk that made the entry ... just as the situation with computer entry today. Try to find a verifying source. An error exists on a Great-grandmother's death certificate as to her father. Heck, even my birth certificate has my parents' given names wrong. Jim Crownover-

    3. Can anyone give a thought to this. Isham Davenport b. c 1805. All census records (where he could be found) indicate birth place as Washington County, VA. In the 1870 records, someone crossed off the Washington County, VA and hand wrote in - Arkansas. Guess I've always looked at it as a prank or something, but on census records???.... I feel certain that Arkansas is not correct and I can't find a time span that he could have even visited Arkansas. I do know that there were brothers of his that ended up going to Arkansas and Missouri. Just wondering if anyone has a idea how a 'change' such as this could have been done to the record. Bonnie

    2. Bonnie, I am only citing from memory, but isn't Isham des. from John who married Lucy Hall d of Isham Hall?I have to go back and see if I can find my notes, but I found several Isham Halls in Mo who had to be Davenport cousins, living in the same Mo Counties with Davenports.. I had put my own personal search on the back burner. Isham Davenport had 22 children including one named Isham who could not be my Isom, so I did not think about him anymore. I think he was too busy to go to Arkansas or tired but I am constantly surprised at the way these people went back and forth. June would know more about this . Virginia Cousins, we need information posted about Davenports after 1820. Most of us are stuck at that barrier, because that is when the Pamunkey Book stops. Also, there were a lot of Davenports who were not Pamunkeys. Surely these migrated to the West. Ellen in Idaho

    2. That is an excellent reminder, Margo. my great Grandfather was FROM Missouri. He never said that he was born there. I think I found him in the 1860 census in New Orleans where he lived. But. Someone has written just a "J" as the name and Mo. as the birthplace. For a long time I dismissed this entry. His wife was just written as Mrs. Davenport. If she were there, surely she would have given her own name. Someone else gave the information. This man told my late uncle he was born in Va. in the 1870 census, he said his birthplace was Ky. In 1880, Va. in 1900 , Ky. He was in the steamboat business and probably was away when the census taker came calling. In 1900 he was retired, so I count that census as the most accurate. 2. Regarding the subject of a person's birthplace, I learned this lesson from my grandmother. When someone asked where she was from, she said Texas. But if you asked where she was born, ahah, that's a different question. She was born in New Orleans, but she was from Texas because that's where she grew up. MargoBelle

    2. I would think I would go with the delayed birth certificate knowing as little as I do... perhaps they were visiting Texas when she was a baby and that's why the person who was filling out the form thought she was born in Tx and then they moved back to OK... hmmmm I would see what else I could find...
