To Ellen in Idaho and Mary, Sorry for the timing delay in writing on this subject. But talking about Isham Davenport... 1st to Ellen... yes, I would agree with 22 children he didn't have much traveling time. Would you believe I just found another living granddaughter to Isham born 1805. That makes 5 that I know of still living.... Remarkable! I am real interested in what Missouri counties had both Davenports and Halls. I know I found some Halls..... brothers Isham Hall Williams and John Davenport Williams... That tells you something... but, you say you found a real Isham Hall and also Davenports in that same county.... Can you (or will you) tell me the county so I can see what I can see... June and I keep pretty much in touch. Poor lady has a bum thumb right now... Surgery. Now, to Mary... You say the Isham line in VA is Joel Davenport to John Davenport. Am I correct and you are saying or thinking that Joel is father to John??? I've always 'thought' that Joel was probably a brother to John, but maybe I've missed something along the way. Any light you can shed on this subject I sure would appreciate! Thanks Bonnie
Bonnie, Give me some time to find my notes. Ellen
Paul.... Another possible explanation with more probability* would be that Ellist's father's name was indeed Chandler, but her mother remarried Mr. Vance after Mr. Chandler was no longer her husband. Another possible, less likely scenario is that Cecilia's maiden name was Chandler, she had Ellist out of wedlock who took her Mother's maiden name, then Cecelia married Mr. Vance. * if you agree that there are more widows and divorcees among older women than younger ones. Dear Robert Brooke Thank you so much for your very prompt reply. The following is my information and I'll send it so you can look at the information and get back with me as is convenient for you James Madison Davenport b 1742 in Hanover York, VA m 4 Ap 1778 to Elizabeth Gilliam b 1762 d1806 and he d 23 July 1824 in Newberry District SC Issue:Jonathan m Susanna Eastland, Charles m Sarah Gary, Raymond, Elizabeth and Lucretia. I have that JMD came from a Joseph Davenport b 1695 in James City VA and m 1740 in VA Margaret Valentine b ca 1710 but I also found a paper in the Marshall TX genealogy library written up by a lady named Janet H Henderson from Houston TX in 1989 where she states JM Davenport's father was a John Davenport , a preacher in New Haven Conn. She stated that James Madison D served in the Revolutionary War 1776 James Madison's son Charles Davenport m Sarah Gary, their son Thomas Gilliam Davenport m Lucinda A Jones and their son Charles Caddo Davenport was my great grandfather. Charles' other children included: James L m Martha Garrett, Martha m Sam Moore, William m Nancy Dial, Thomas G (see above) , Jessie G, John, Jonathan, Charles Gilliam m Christina Steele, Joseph W m Isabella Dial, Isaac Newton m Virginia Respes. I have more dates than I stated here. I am anxious to know what you can tell me about JM Davenport. Thanks for your time. Hi I live in Elkhart Is there any help I can give you? Vera Andrews
Hello All, Found an entry in a book of religious newspaper entries in South Carolina. This entry created more questions than it answered. Can you help? "The Working Christian", Issue Jan 27, 1870 By Rev. A. C. Stepp, Tuesday evening, Jan 11th, 1870 at the residence of the bride's mother, Mrs. Cecilia Vance, Mr. Ira Davenport, and Mrs Ellist Chandler, both of Greenville, SC. I assume this announces the union of Ira Davenport and Ellist Chandler. Was Ellist a widow of a Chandler and thus her maiden name is Vance? These lines cross over a couple of times. Any info welcome. Thanks for the compliment, Jack. I take it that this "accidental" letter sent out to the list has a purpose. Surely you know not to do so with a private letter. Did you think this up all by yourself? For the record , folks, I have never claimed to be a computer expert ,( Jack knows this.) In fact mine is only two years old. Not an expert genealogist, either. Just a little old lady in bifocals who was helped by many people along the way. If anyone has any objection to my answering questions, please e-mail me privately. If you want advice from the expert, you have his address and good luck if he answers. My name is listed as a researcher on the Pamunkey Book page, so I must have done something acceptable. I just found something using my computer that the expert had missed for a million years. It was not something he could not have found, he just didn't. The others were able to uncover everything else. I am not ubsubscribing, although I think Jack wants me to. I still like to hear what others have to say about Davenport Families. Anything wrong with that? To Ann Graham and other interested Newberry researchers: Ann... I believe, but am not sure, because I am getting old and the memory is getting very selective, that we have corresponded before about our common ancestry. But right now, I am using a laptop at a cabin, and am away from my main computer and my files. What I have is that James Davenport was born in 1742, his wife was Elizabeth Gillam (Gilliam?). I am descended from their son, Charles, but I believe they had another son who was either James Madison, or his son was James Madison. I believe James (1742) had no middle name, and did not serve in the Revolution. There are one or more DAR records which attribute a middle name of Madison to James (1742). I believe this false submission to the DAR was made so that somebody could claim lineage to 1742 James. In fact, I believe James was a loyalist, and not a patriot. Well, without my files, I better stop before my memory plays tricks on us both. Please stay in touch, and maybe together, along with a couple of others on this list, we can make some progress. I'd like a copy of that letter, Ellen, if you ever find it. Thanks to all. Hi, all. Ginger is quite right in saying that a body indicates a birth, somewhere, sometime. The question is where and when, and a death certificate isn't evidence of those two questions. Using the same logic, a birth certificate tells us the answers to those questions, but it is not primary evidence of when and where either parent was born, as Ginger found out.
