MargoBelle, Thank you for a very interesting and informative message. I know that everyone appreciates it, especially me. I would like to add that there are also some Davenports who are Descendants of American Presidents (besides the obvious ones). Case in point: My direct descendant, Augustine "Austin" Davenport, married Elizabeth Hoover, a direct descendant of President Herbert Hoover. I would be interested in hearing from anyone else descended from a President. Thank you so much for the information. I had never been able to find her listed in the Dawes Records. Was she perhaps born in Cadiz, Kentucky. mcguire: The Meninfinee land records were listed on Ancestry.com, where I found the entry. I sent the entire entry, but I think you can get the full records from either the Menifee County Clerk, County Courthouse, Frenchburg, Ky. 40322, 606-768-3512, or from the Public Records Division of the Kentucky Archives, 300 Coffee Tree Road, Box 537, Frankfort, Ky. 40602. That's interesting about Nevada Jack's mention of Fletcher - that's my maiden name! And yes, it means maker of arrows, or more specifically, the one who puts the feathers on the arrows! MargoBelle

Also, I found this separate entry: American Marriage Records Before 1699: DAVENPORT, Francis and Rebecca Destow, 1 July 1692, Chesterfield, N.J. And this Quaker record: Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy: Philadelphia [p.191] MINUTES AND MARRIAGE RECORDS, page 214 1692, 8, 3. Rebecca ltm Francis Davenport The Dawes Commission also lists a Francis Davenport: Dawes Commission 1896 Index Surname: DAVENPORT First Name: FRANCIS Middle Name: S Tribe: Cherokee Case Number: 4263 I hope some of this helps. The loops in genealogy go round and round, don't they? MargoBelle
Re: Sarah Day on the Dawes Commission Roles No problem, I'm always glad to help. Let me know if you need any addresses of historical or genealogical societies in Kentucky, I'll send them to you. MargoBelle
To all of you Newberry Davenports, I am interested in any information that you can provide me with either by email or by US Mail relating to Francis Davenport of Newberry, South Carolina in that time period. I have not spent much time on this family because I did not believe they were part of my line. Now I'm not so sure. Recently Adrienne (Yoga Golf@aol.com) posted to this list a mention of Sarah Davenport 1764-1844 (Dau. of Francis) married Samuel Beeks/Beakes 1752-1814 (Hereafter Beakes). When I read it, it jumped right out at me. Beakes is pretty much a Bucks County, Pa./ Burlington Co. NJ surname. Since then, Adrienne and I have been in touch. I have done quite a bit of research to add to what I had on Edmund Beakes and what Adrienne had on Samuel Beakes. I believe we have a round-about lead from Francis Davenport of Newberry to Francis Davenport of Chesterfield, Burlington County, NJ. Will try to make this as easy as I can. Sarah Davenport 1764-1844 was a daughter of Francis Davenport of Newberry, SC. She married Samuel Beakes 1752-1814 of Bucks County, PA. Samuel Beakes grandfather, Abraham Beakes 1703-1732 of Bucks Co, Pa. was a first cousin to Edmund Beakes 1692-1775 of Bucks Co, Pa to Burlington Co. NJ. Edmund Beakes married 1719, Burlington County, NJ Anne Gilberthorpe b.4.20.1692. Anne Gilberthorpe was daughter of Thomas Gilberthorpe & Esther Brown/e. Esther Brown/e was a dau. of Henry & Ann Brown/e. Sarah Brown/e was a sister to Esther & dau of Henry & Ann Brown/e Sarah Brown/e was 2nd wife (& my ancestor) of Francis Davenport 1651-1707 born in Cheshire, England and died at Chesterfield, Burlington County, New Jersey. Obviously we need a lot more. I'm hoping some of you may have something that will lead us to more. Bob McKeon RHilands@aol.com Robert Hilands McKeon P.O. I have some Davenport information that I would like to share with the group. First is from a rather obscure book called "Gone To Missouri - From Whence They Came" by Marilyn Moore, 1991. In it are these Davenport entries, although the initials in place of first names are frustrating. Still, it might help somebody find a link. D.W. Davenport, b. Boone Co. Mo. 1837. Source: Missouri Pioneers Vol. 9 D.W. Davenport, b. Michigan, came to Macon Co. Mo. in 1865. Source: Mo. Miscellany Vol. 6 George Davenport, b. Kentucky, came to Johnson Co. Mo. in 1834. Source: Mo. Pioneers Vol.25 The next book is more informative. It's "Ancestors of American Presidents" by Gary Boyd Roberts, 1991. There are 3 American Presidents with Davenport ancestors: WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT William Torrey (great-grandfather), b. Mendon Nov. 23, 1754, d. Mendon Sept. 16, 1817. Anna Davenport (great-grandmother), b. Mendon, Mass. Sept. 8, 1765, m. Mendon July 20, 1788, d. Mendon Aug. 1, 1842, m. (2) Peter Holbrook. Seth Davenport (g-g-grandfather) , b. Milton, Mass. Dorchester Mass. Oct. 20, 1697, m. before 1726, d. Mendon June 29, 1773. Rebecca Holbrook (g-g-g-grandmother) b. Roxbury, Mass. Feb. 9, 1699, d. Interestingly, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, George Bush and Bill Clinton all have extremely well-documented family trees, each one going back about 9 generations. I am looking for the following family: I-1 William Davenport was probably the brother of Thomas Davenport formerly of New york, who executed his will in London in 1698, and was living in Flushing in 1675. He moved to Westchester County shortly after that date. The name of his first wife, the mother of John and William, is not recorded, but probably was Dorothy, as both sons gave a daughter that name. He married Mary, widow of John Hitchcock, before 30 May 1681, when he and his wife sold to Joseph Hadley three acres of land formerly owned by John Hitchcock. He was living in Westchester in 1698, but moved to Pelham before 1709. To all who are interested in obituaries: I would like to call your attention to the Publishers Genealogical Coding Service, which is encouraging newspapers across the country to add a special code to each obituary they publish to enable future genealogists to easily identify the newspaper and date of publication for obituaries that have been "clipped" from the newspaper. I am not affiliated with this organization and only learned about them from the National Genealogy Society Newsletter. However, I volunteered to send a "customized form letter" to my two local newspapers and to help "spread the word". It only cost me 66 cents (for two stamps) and a few moments of my time. You can find out the entire story about this organization and how you too can help them, and future genealogists, by visiting http://www.obituarycoding.com . The PGCS has the approval of the APG, CGC, FGS, and NGS. Feel free to share this message with other mailing lists and researchers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jack W.
