I teach school so the school year is hectic, but summer finds me with 3 children at home.......need I say more......I don't get to spend the time on my research that I would like to and my sources are limited living in a small town. 2. In a message dated 99-06-28 08:40:26 EDT, you write: << Any idea if he's connected somehow to one of the Humphreys and/or the Barbados connection? Doug >> If you mean is he connected to one of the Humphrey's in the information I recently sent to you on the Cheshire, England Davenport's descended from Orme de Davenport, by US Mail in the large white envelope that I hope you received, the answer is yes. Also, I sent you information of Francis Davenport of NJ in the past. The Barbados connection I have no proof but NJ Francis Davenport's son-in-law Gervas Hall along with other Burlington County, New Jersey Quakers traveled back and forth. It was not unusual. 1. [DAVENPORT-L] P.A.F. Version 4.0 for Windows - A Free Program
    2. Jack W. Ralph
    3. Dear Cousins, I thought some of you would find this of interest. Nevada Jack ============================================================ The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 1999 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. ============================================================ - P.A.F. Version 4.0 for Windows - A Free Program Beginning Monday morning June 28, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is offering free downloads of Personal Ancestral File version 4.0. This is a brand new version of one of the most popular genealogy programs in the world. The new version has two major changes from previous versions: (1.) for the first time it is a Windows program, and (2.) it is a free program. Personal Ancestral File version 4.0 will be available to everyone online. Personal Ancestral File has always been known as a "bare bones" genealogy program that does the basics. It has also been famous for its low price. Ten years ago the low-end genealogy programs sold for $50.00 or so while more powerful ones cost $200 and more. In those days, Personal Ancestral File, usually referred to as PAF, sold for $35.00. In 1997 The LDS Church released PAF version 3.0. Software prices had tumbled, and many genealogy programs were selling for $35.00 or less. As a result, the price of PAF 3.0 was dropped to $15.00. Prices of genealogy software have continued to drop further in the past two years, and apparently the LDS Church is reacting by cutting the price still further. Personal Ancestral File has the ultimate bargain price: zero dollars. Another factor is the low- cost distribution method available today: digital downloads. While the capability of downloading digital files has been available for more than 15 years, it has become a lot more popular with the explosion of the World Wide Web. By making the new PAF version 4.0 available on the Web, the LDS Church does not have to pay for CD- ROM disks, packaging, printed manuals, warehouse space, postage, or the labor involved in receiving orders and packing the product into shipping boxes. The other significant change is the choice of Windows. In the June 5, 1999 newsletter I repeated a rumor of a new Windows version. Earlier versions of PAF were available only for MS-DOS and for Macintosh. While the Mac version has always sported a user- friendly, event-driven interface, the MS-DOS version has long looked rather archaic with its menu-driven interface. There are very few MS-DOS programs available in today's marketplace. The switch to Windows seemed inevitable; PAF is the last of the popular genealogy programs to make that switch. Personal Ancestral File version 4.0 requires the following: * Windows 95, 98 or NT * 486/66 processor or faster with a Pentium processor strongly recommended * At least 16 megabytes of memory. The program will run even faster with more memory. * 20 megabytes of hard disk space * A 256-color display adapter supporting 640x480 screen resolution. However, the program is optimized for 800x600 pixels. Obviously, Internet access is required to obtain the program although such access is not required during the program's operation. Personal Ancestral File 4.0 will also be available on CD-ROM for a nominal price in early 2000. The exact price hasn't been announced, but apparently it will be just enough to cover the cost of making the CD-ROM disks, handling and postage. Users will be able to purchase the CD-ROM version from the Church's distribution centers worldwide. The Macintosh version of Personal Ancestral File has not changed for some time and it continues to sell for $35.00. This week's announcement did not mention any changes in the Macintosh version. Version 4.0 of Personal Ancestral File for Windows should be available Monday morning at: http://www.familysearch.org. ============================================================

Earliene, I found the following early in my research and I will give it to you. I can't swear it is correct, but some of the names overlap. Old Rappahannock Co. Records(out of Lancaster Co lasted 1656-1692) 1671: Joan DAVENPORT and Margaret his wife sell 580a to Richard Barber. 1683: Will of John names wife, sons:George, John,William and Fortunatus. George m Ruth? and had Margaret, Sarah and Elizabeth. He d 1734 His will in Richmond Co.I show nothing for John and Fortunatus. William(John) m Rachel Hog(could be widow w/maiden name Wood) they had three sons named: John, William and Wood. William (John) d 1716.Will in Lancaster Co. for Wm in 1716 and 1719. I don't have information on John or Wood, but William's info moves to Richmond Co and shows he m Elizabeth Heale d/o George Heale Nov 1728. It lists only three sons: William Jr.B 1735, George and Fortunatus b 1738. A1772 will in Richmond Co shows a William d 1772. George d 1760 and A Fortunatus in 1779. George m Mary? and had at least Nancy and John. Fortunatus m Elizabeth? and names John, Joseph, Betty(Eliz)Heale and Rachel. OPINION***From time lines and naming repetition, I felt that Davis had brothers John and William, but have never been able to prove it.Children of Davis's son Martin spelled their name DEAVENPORT and they could write.Early NC settlers in Eastern NC also spell their name the same way and used the same names for several generations. Can anyone connect them??????????????? I feel you have done more work on this line of the family, but it does seem that they come from John. I hope this helps. I would like to know about the William that m Comfort Fisher since they were part of the NC migration. Elaine in NC

    2. Dear Earliene, I think you may have mixed up two families here. I have found some info that identifies another William as the son of William Davenport of Richmond County and Elizabeth Wood. Your William and Comfort were married in Accomack county, which is on the eastern shore of VA, on the other side of the Chesapeake Bay from Richmond County. Where did you find your info? Would you like some of what I have on the Richmond County Davenports? I don't really know anything about your William & Comfort, except that his Revolutionary War file is at the National Archives and it may tell you where he was born. Carol

    3. Hi, Sara, I'm hoping that we may be researching the same line. I've gotten back to a Thomas Davenport and can't find any more info on him. We believe he lived in NY. Probably around the Kingston area. He Married Jane Kimble. Jane died in 1903. They had a son William (my great grandfather) on 2-28-1864. I'm estimating that Thomas was born around 1830's and was married around 1860's. I don't have any more info on him. Thanks! 1. [DAVENPORT-L] Francis Davenport SC to NJ?
    2. Hello Bob and All, I, too, am very interested in the Francis connection. I thank you again Bob for the information you shared with me regarding the NJ branch. Similar dates and places suggest that Francis Davenport (1718-1798) is the son of Isaac Davenport (?-1749). Doc suggested that Isaac traveled south to Granville Co. NC. He and his son's (Francis, Joseph, James and Isaac) activities are well documented in this area. Francis moved to Newberry and Francis's son William moved on to Greenville. The Granville NC records contain many names, some of which continue on to Newberry. Some random surnames that are associated with the Davenports in Granville include: Christian, Lawrence, Thornton, Weldon, Person, Fowler, Slaughter, Lewis, Peelor, Wilkerson, Cook, Hunter, Haywood, Satterwhite, Bullock, Specific Names include: John Walace, John Hunter, James Williams, Abraham Cooke, James Mitchell, Edmond Cartledge, Charles Gilliam, Nathaniel Daugherty,. DAR records have Francis born in VA. There is a Francis Davenport, soldier, listed in the Rev. War Rec. of VA by Brumbaugh. I do not believe them to be the same Francis. I hope this encourages others to respond. Now we have our own enigma. Phil Triebes Newberry Dav's.

    1. [DAVENPORT-L] VIRGINIANS AND THEIR LAND
    2. Jack W. Ralph
    3. VIRGINIANS AND THEIR LAND by Barbara Vines Little <blittle@ns.gemlink.com> [Barbara Vines Little, M.Ed (University of Virginia), has published three volumes of Virginia court records and edited others for publication. She is past-president of the Virginia Genealogical Society <http://www.vgs.org/>, editor of the quarterly MAGAZINE OF VIRGINIA GENEALOGY, and editor of the bi- monthly "Virginia Genealogical Society Newsletter," in Vol. XXV, No. 2 (April 1999) of which "Virginians and Their Land" first appeared. It is reprinted here with the author's permission.] Virginia's early land records are one of the few surviving colonial record groups. They are also one of the most misunderstood. While there are a number of sources of information on the land grant system, the best overall source of information is a small book reviewed in the last issue of this newsletter , VIRGINIA LAND GRANTS: A STUDY IN CONVEYANCING IN RELATION TO COLONIAL POLITICS by Fairfax Harrison. First printed in 1925, Harrison intended the book to be a comparison of Virginia's two land grant systems -- the Northern Neck Proprietary and the Royal patents. However, it is also a history of the systems, and in developing the history of the evolvement of the two systems. Harrison provides the reader with the information needed to understand the conditions under which individuals (our ancestors) obtained land grants and discusses the additional information that can be gleaned from the records. Harrison begins with a history of land granting under the Virginia Company and then speaks to one of the more common misunderstandings of the land grant system -- the researcher who identifies an ancestor as having been "given" a grant of land by King George. Grants were issued for "charter importation rights," treasury rights or military service. Harrison notes that importation rights were used primarily in the seventeenth century and treasury rights in the eighteenth, but that all three continued to the end of the colonial period. Many researchers are unaware that importation rights were still used in the eighteenth century, yet a survey of the patents abstracted in volume six of CAVALIERS AND PIONEERS shows a number of entries for importation rights. The history of each of the rights is treated in detail so that the reader can follow the evolvement of each and hopefully will learn to look for the information that defines the type of right under which the grant was obtained. Not only should the researcher pay attention to the type of right used to obtain land, but to where the land was located. Was it in an area that was already well populated, one that was just developing or an area that was on the frontier and free of taxes for the next seven years? Other questions should look at the size of the grant in relation to others in the area, the counties of residence of adjacent landowners and whether the grants were primarily by land speculators or people moving into the area for settlement. Politics played an important roll in the land grant system and the researcher needs to be aware of this. In no other single place can one get a better introduction to the politics of the land grant system than in Harrison's VIRGINIA LAND GRANTS. Although Fairfax Harrison has the most comprehensive explanation of the land grant system, there are a number of other sources of information. The 18-page introduction to Daphne Gentry's VIRGINIA LAND OFFICE INVENTORY, revised and enlarged by John S. Salmon and republished by the Library [of Virginia] in 1981, but currently out-of-print, provides an overview of the Virginia land grant system and includes information on the major land grants issued to Beverley and Borden and later grants to the Greenbrier and Loyal land companies. The land office inventory itself provides useful information on the paperwork generated by the system. The introductions to the first three volumes of CAVALIERS AND PIONEERS (abstracted by Nell Marion Nugent) each provide additional information. The introductions to the remaining four volumes of the colonial patent abstracts (Dennis Hudgins, editor) provide additional information. These were written by Daphne Gentry, Robert Young Clay, and John Hemphill II, all of whom have studied the subject in depth. The abstracts themselves provide additional information in regard to the system and the politics surrounding it. Further information on settlement patterns can be gleaned by studying county and regional patent maps created for various counties throughout Virginia. Among those available are Fairfax, Loudoun, Orange, Westmoreland, Greensville, Goochland. Two of the previous are Northern Neck Proprietary counties. The two major record groups of the papers of the Northern Neck Proprietary have been abstracted and published. The Northern Neck survey and warrants (which do not survive for the colonial patents -- they were burned annually) were abstracted by Peggy Shomo Joyner and published in a five-volume series. The grants were abstracted by Gertrude E. Gray in four volumes. . . In addition to these references, students of the land grant system need to look at the various bounty warrant compilations, the lodged and caveated surveys abstracted in the MAGAZINE OF VIRGINIA GENEALOGY as well as the abstracts of the preemption warrants. A familiarity with the various aspects of the land grant system in Virginia provides the student of colonial history with the information necessary to understand the driving forces behind settlement patterns in Virginia and will in many cases help the researcher find the origins of his frontier ancestors. 1. [DAVENPORT-L] SC FRANCIS DAVENPORT---NJ FRANCIS DAVENPORT???
    2. When I first joined this list, many people were looking for a connection to 1682 immigrant to New Jersey Francis Davenport. I mailed out to several people what I had on Francis Davenport that was quite a bit. On June 22, I sent to the list a possible lead on a connection of the two Francis Davenport's. I have not heard from any of those people that were trying to make the connection. This was my June 22 email: To all of you Newberry Davenports, I am interested in any information that you can provide me with either by email or by US Mail relating to Francis Davenport of Newberry, South Carolina in that time period. I have not spent much time on this family because I did not believe they were part of my line. Now I'm not so sure. Recently Adrienne (Yoga Golf@aol.com) posted to this list a mention of Sarah Davenport 1764-1844 (Dau. of Francis) married Samuel Beeks/Beakes 1752-1814 (Hereafter Beakes). When I read it, it jumped right out at me. Beakes is pretty much a Bucks County, Pa./ Burlington Co. NJ surname. Since then, Adrienne and I have been in touch. I have done quite a bit of research to add to what I had on Edmund Beakes and what Adrienne had on Samuel Beakes. I believe we have a round-about lead from Francis Davenport of Newberry to Francis Davenport of Chesterfield, Burlington County, NJ. Will try to make this as easy as I can. Sarah Davenport 1764-1844 was a daughter of Francis Davenport of Newberry, SC. She married Samuel Beakes 1752-1814 of Bucks County, PA. Samuel Beakes grandfather, Abraham Beakes 1703-1732 of Bucks Co, Pa. was a first cousin to Edmund Beakes 1692-1775 of Bucks Co, Pa to Burlington Co. NJ. Edmund Beakes married 1719, Burlington County, NJ Anne Gilberthorpe b.4.20.1692. Anne Gilberthorpe was daughter of Thomas Gilberthorpe & Esther Brown/e. Esther Brown/e was a dau. of Henry & Ann Brown/e. Sarah Brown/e was a sister to Esther & dau of Henry & Ann Brown/e Sarah Brown/e was 2nd wife (& my ancestor) of Francis Davenport 1651-1707 born in Cheshire, England and died at Chesterfield, Burlington County, New Jersey. Obviously we need a lot more. I'm hoping some of you may have something that will lead us to more. Bob McKeon RHilands@aol.com Robert Hilands McKeon P.O. Box 270011 West Hartford, CT. 06127-0011 860-523-0457 This is a recent discovery: FROM: A History of Trenton (NJ) 1679-1929 p51 The Colonial Period.. Stacy and Trent----Two Historic Names (Mahlon Stacy & James Trent) " Both men were rich and left slaves. In the inventory of Stacy, appraised April 25, 1704, and filed in the office of the Secretary of State, amounting in all to 1034 os.6d, the appraisers being Abel Janney, SAMUEL BEAKES, WILLIAM BEAKES, and FRANCIS DAVENPORT. etc." This Samuel Beakes 1666-1732 was father to above Abraham Beakes 1703-1732 and this William Beakes 1663-1711 was father to above Edmund Beakes 1692-1775. Samuel Beakes and William Beakes were brothers. Mahlon Stacy' daughter Ruth was 2nd wife of William Beakes 1663-1711. Also interesting on p395 ...." Francis Davenport, however, was the original of the famous "Pooh Bah" of Gilbert and Sullivan's opera, holding at one and the same time the offices of high sheriff of Burlington County, justice of the peace of Somerset, Essex, Bergen, Gloucester, Burlington, Salem, Cape May, Mommouth and Middlesex counties. He was also an assemblyman at various times, and a judge of the higher courts, thus serving continuously in several important offices until his death." I need to know if there continues to be anyone with an interest in finding a connection to Francis Davenport of West Jersey. Bob McKeon

    2. I guess the song started out as an editorial or such in a newspaper. The woman who wrote it commented that this is what she wished graduation speakers would really say. Or at least that's how I remember the story to be... Valerie

    3. Thanx Jack, all I can say is AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Truer words were never spoken. I am 70 and I wish that I had at least followed 10% of that advice. Don't misunderstand me, I am not complaining any at all and have very few regrets. God has been exceedingly GOOD to me and I have had a wonderful life and hopefully a few more years to explore and indulge myself a few more little whims here and there along the way. Billy Bob
