    1. [DAVENPORT-L] James Alexander Davenport
    2. Vicki I have a James A. DAVENPORT (DOB abt 1829) who is the son of Alexander Davenport and Eleanor (i believe her maiden name is Higgins). This James A. also has a brother Bery born abt 1830 and another unidentified male born abt 1820-25. Another brother of James A. is James Reburn Davenport DOB 1836. James Reburn is my great-grandfather. This family was mostly in Union Co., KY which is right next door to Caldwell and they could have moved back and forth. I do know they did go back and forthe between KY and ILL. I would be interested in how you verified your James Alexanders father as Ned and any other info you have. It is just too much of a coincidence that these two families are not somehow related as they are living so close together and use some of the same names. My information on this family has come from census records, church records, land records, civil war pension records, etc. Look forward to hearing from you or anyone else on the list regarding this family becky

    3. Hello to all fellow Davenport researchers, I am new to your list and I have enjoyed reading each post that comes in. I also enjoy Jack and all his contributions to this list. I'm here looking for more information on JAMES ALEXANDER DAVENPORT (1838-1898), and brothers JASON and BARRY. I believe the father of these three is a NED DAVENPORT, has anyone heard of him and this family line? OLIVER BENSON DAVENPORT (1886-1961) was son of JAMES, and lived in CALDWELL COUNTY, KY., but I am unsure where the family was before KY. Would love to hear from anyone knowing more about these DAVENPORTS!! Also, I found the following DAVENPORTS listed in the Confederate Parole Records at Vicksburg and I thought you each might what to visit this site. It's very interesting and it has quite a database of names of those released after the battle of Vicksburg in 1863. I hope it's okay to reprint them here. Of course, I don't know if they're your people or not, but at least it's a start. Here's what I found: DAVENPORT, NED Franklin Parish LA , Pg. 37, 4W Winnsboro Dist. Gosh it feels so good to finally find someone that is looking for john and elizabeth. I don't have any birthdates on any of bud's brothers or sisters, i don't even have all of his brothers and sisters names i don't think. But this sounds as close as i have ever come to a john and elizabeth. do you live in sc? i live close to anderson. Thanks for this letter! it means so much to connect with family! keep writing! please! Lib

    3. Nevada Jack, Easy way to remember usage: "e" means out or out of; and "im" means in or into. Immigrate=migrate in or into; emigrate=migrate out or out of. It's a pity they don't teach Latin in high school anymore. You can also think of it this way. You immerse something in water, but it emerges (or is emersed) when you bring it out. 3. Dear Cousins, I am inviting a discussion of two words that are used a lot in genealogy, but which have different meanings for different people. The words are "emigrate" and "immigrate". According to my Funk & Wagnall: "emigrate: To go from one country, or section of a country, to settle in another. A person *emigrates from* the land he leaves, and *immigrates to* the land where he takes up his abode." Also, according to my granddaughter's Macmillan Dictionary for Children: "emigrate: To leave one's own country to live in another. Her family plans to emigrate from the United States to England." "emigrant: A person who leaves his own country to live in another. Peggy's parents were emigrants from Ireland." "immigrate: To go to live in a country in which one was not born. My grandparents immigrated to the United States from Poland." "immigrant: A person who comes to live in a country in which he or she was not born. My grandfather was an immigrant to the United States from Italy." I had been confused by these two words for many years and for the past year have had the above definitions posted on the bulletin board above my desk. Can anyone else offer a different definition? Nevada Jack

    3. Hi List, Osborne Davenport appears in various records in Cumberland and Buckingham Co's. Is it possible he could be from a family in that area rather than the family of Thomas & Mary (Noel/Nolan) Davenport? There is no documentation that I can find that proves the issue of of Thomas of WCV. There is no Will or Estate Settlement. Also there is no Will or Estate Settlement in Wayne Co., KY for Osborne. Also I have a copy from the Georgia Genealogist Magazine published a few years ago and written by Adam Davenport, gr-grandson of Thomas Davenport of WCV that states Thomas came from England and settled in Jamestown. I had reason to believe he was the son of Juluis. Which one is correct? Can anyone help me with this issue. Mary Duncan Mary Duncan
