Dear Fran, Hi. Read your note about Allen Davenport. He is the son of William Davenport of Lenoir County...not to be confused with William Davenport , brother of Jonas, who lived in Lenoir, N.C.(Caldwell County). Your William's will was recorded in Lenoir County and a copy is available through The Southern Historical Collection at U.N.C.. The source is The Herring Papers. Maybe Lenoir County has a copy of it , too. I have not looked there... I accidentally found that will when I was researching Colonel William Davenport of Caldwell County. Carol
Richard, I saw your note to Fran. This William Davenport was one I researched thining that he was the father of our Anderson Wesley Davenport of Lincoln County, NC. We visited Fort Defiance, home of General William Lenoir, where the Lenoir and Davenport families are buried. Soon found that we were chasing the wrong William. Below is the info I have on William's family. You may wish to forward this to Fran if she doesn't have this. Hi Fran: At the present time I can't help you but if you can make one connection I might. My gggg-grandfather had a son William. He was born in 1770 in Culpepper Co. Va. to Martin Davenport and Hannah Baker. They left Va. and came to the Johns River area of what is now Caldwell Co. N.C. From there they came up into the mountains in what is now Avery and Mitchell Counties, the area where I now live. After several years William moved back to the Johns River area in Caldwell Co., where Lenoir is located. He married Mary Lenoir Gordon, widow of Major Charles Gordon and they raised a family. I have none of the childrens names. William was a brother to my ggg-grandfather Jonas, so if you can make the connection to William I can get you back to Martin, Thomas, Martin Sr, and Davis who are listed on the Panmunky Davenport page....Richard C.
