To All Pamunkey Davenport Family Association Members: On 26 September 1999, I went to Lexington, Virginia and met John Scott Davenport aka Jersey Doc. We left Lexington on Monday morning (27 September) and drove to Louisa, Virginia. We spent the remainder of Monday and all of Tuesday and Wednesday in the Louisa County Court Clerk's Office poring through records i.e. court orders, deeds, wills, marriages, etc. The Louisa Library was open on Monday and Tuesday nights until 9:00 PM and we availed ourselves of this opportunity on Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday, we left bright and early and drove to the Goochland, Powhatan, and Amelia County Court Houses. On Friday, we went to the Cumberland County Court House. We made a sight seeing tour late Friday after working hours and went south of Cumberland where Thomas Davenport and his family settled. Believe it or not, there was a road named Davenport Road going through the country side where Thomas and his family had owned about 2000 acres about 200 years ago. I was really excited and got my camera out and made about six pictures of the sign on both ends of the road, hoping at least one came out good. On Saturday, Doc guided us through parts of Louisa, Hanover, Spotsylvania, and Caroline Counties where Martin Davenport and his family had once resided. We proceeded down VA Route 30 to King William Court House and turned off to follow the county roads that led to where our progenitor, Davis Davenport, had his 200 acres on the Mattaponi River known as Davenport's Landing. We went from there over to the Pamunkey Indian Reservation, not much to relate about that stop. After family sightseeing, we drove over to Williamsburgh. This was an interesting place to visit. We didn't get to see as much as I would have liked to have seen because we arrived late and I was tired, but I would highly recommend it to everyone. We drove to Richmond and got a motel room and then took Doc to the train station at 2:30 AM so he could board his train back to New Jersey. This trip was undertaken to glean every last tidbit of data that was to be found to fill in gaps and correct any erroneous data previously posted. Our method of working was for Doc to tell me to get certain books and scan through them using the index and then page by page looking for any pertinent names. I put little slips of paper in the pages and then Doc would read the material and extract (in his own shorthand) necessary data. This proved to be an efficient method. I was amazed at the intensity and the ability to focus on the material that Doc has regardless of the noise or other distractions such as children making noises at the Louisa Library. Doc will write a report and forward it to me and I will then forward it to the Davenport list. This will contribute a large amount to our continuing investigation of the Pamunkey Davenport History. There was a balance in the PDFA account of $544.39. Our expenses were as follows: Lodging (5 nights only) $261.25 Meals (5 lunches only) 72.32 Mileage (500 miles only) 125.00 Total $458.57 Balance PDFA $85.82 We kept our expenses to a minimum by paying for our own evening meals, no motel charges except on working days, and no mileage for me to and from Virginia and no compensation for Doc's train fare home. I was gone nine days and travelled 1958 miles. We plan to make another trip next spring and concentrate on the Cumberland County Court House which has over 140 Davenport Deeds in their records. Comments??????????? Robert L. Davenport aka Billy Bob P.S. I forgot to mention that I stopped at the Albemarle Court House for about three hours last Monday morning on my way home and copied some Davenport marriages and deeds.
Hi friends, A marriage index database is now online at: http://www2.sos.state.il.us/cgi-bin/marriage It covers 1763-1900 and includes many counties, but it is an ongoing project, so not all marriages are indexed yet. If you are looking for a Illinois marriage, you might want to check it out. Happy Searching, Vicki A Kentuckian-once removed (to Indiana)
The cemetary I mentioned in my note from Newfoundland is also in New Jersey. It's located on Route 23, in Newfoundland. I'm sorry. I forgot to mention the state. The Oak Ridge Presbyterian Church is in Oak Ridge, New Jersey. Chris :) ESandyBL@aol.com wrote: > Do you have a town, county or state for this Oak Ridge Presbyterian Cemetery? -- Thanks! Chris Strube Independent D.O.T.S. Demonstrator
I am unfamiliar with the locations of the cemeteries that were on the last few e-mails. What county and state are they in? Thanks, Marne
This weekend I'll be visiting the Holland Mountain Cemetary and the Milton Cemetary. I'll be writing down all the Davenports, but if there's another surname you're interested in let me know. -- Thanks! Chris Strube

That would help a lot. Also, what geographical location would "The Hills" be? I live outside Chicago, so don't know much about that. Ha ha.. I hope this helps a little. MargoBelle
Thought I would post this here to be kept safe and sound in the Davenport files. Ancestry.com has a collection of Baptisms and Burials from an Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, established in 1695, and called Christ Church. This collection was compiled by Charles R. Hildeburn, from the records of that church for the years 1709-1760, and includes: Sarah Davenport Burial Date 1/4/1751 Wife of Joseph no other information is given.
If anybody is interested, here is the complete annals written by the War Department of their records of the conflict. http://moa.cit.cornell.edu/MOA/MOA-JOURNALS2/WARO.html Billy Bob

Children: Female Davenport, b. 1800/10 married Randolph Gibson Nancy Davenport, b. 1808 married William Gibson, died in AR Jeptha Davenport, b. 1812 married Mary Cook, he died about 1848 in Franklin Co., TN (after Jeptha's death, Mary migrated to AR and married Benjamin Hubbard) Mary Davenport Samuel T. Davenport James Davenport, b. 1821, married Mary Hasty, 1844 in Franklin Co., TN, moved to Arkansas Luvina Davenport, b. ?, married Samuel Duckworth, 1839, in Franklin C., TN, moved to Arkansas I have found some of those that migrated to Arkansas in the Benton Co., area. Some family stories also refer to them as "going back to the Dardanelles" as that is where they were from. Mary Cook Davenport Hubbard is said to have raised as many as 21 children, her children, his children, their children and some grandchildren. Would appreciate any information pertaining to these families. Have some information about descendants and will be happy to exchange information. Etta

Hi Jann, In regard to your Devenport family. I would probably doubt if my group is the same, but with some of these especially mysterious Davenports who knows. Our Davenports started out at Devenports....and were from Virginia as far back as 1765. There are 2 John W. Davenports. One was born in 1858 son of David Davenport, son of Isham Davenport. The other John W. was born in 1880 in Kentucky, the son of Thomas Jefferson Davenport and Sarah Gobble.... Thomas was son of Isham Davenport. This John married a Agnes Isabelle Mitchel. Now one thing that is peculiar is that Isham Davenport.....in 1880 was on the Washington County Virginia Census Records.....but, on those records, someone in pen had crossed off Virginia and wrote in 'Arkansas'. We now that some of the family eventually went in that direction..... I believe first to Missouri and then to Arkansas. (NOTE: June Johnson..... if your reading this, maybe you can fill her in on how this works better than me....) I do know that OUR Devenport/Davenport is a hard group to trace.... I know that our Isham had 22 children and they are hard to find or keep up with.... Do you know any more about your family such as their prior home.... VA? As I said, this is probably nothing, but ...... Bonnie Davenport

Chris, I am directly descended of Thomas William DAVENPORT. If your Thomas was from Kingston, NY, that would be in the east, my DAVENPORTs are from the Buffalo area. With the similar names & time frame, it could be possible that your Thomas was descended of a brother, or other relation, of my Cornelius Briggs DAVENPORT I, the father of Benjamin, but I don't see any kind of direct connection. I don't have any information on Cornelius except that he & Susan A. were Benjamin's parents. Benjamin Stockton DAVENPORT; b. 12-3-1810; was an early resident of Buffalo, NY & was there in 1813. He came to Lockport, Niagara, NY in 1820. Phoebe ALLEN; b. 9-23-1810; came to Lockport in July of 1824 from Farmington, Ontario, NY. I do have the info on their eight children. They are: 1-Mary; b. probably 1836; m. Dr. David LESTER 2-Celestia A. A. (Les); b. 1838; not married; d. 1909 3-Cornelius Briggs II; b. 11-3-1840; d. 5-9-1864 in Civil War 4-Thomas William; b. 2-7-1842; m. Mary Ann Bulman 4-5-1865; d. 6-30-1912 5-Daniel Allen; b. 3-7-1846; m. (1)Celia K. (2)Lottie Miller; d. 2-14-1914 6-Loraine Eugenia; b. 3-10-1848; d. 8-9-1848 7-Patience Elizabeth; b. 1-25-1850 8-Henry Howard; b. 8-1-1852; d. 10-27-1866 Wally
I am having a terrible time locating my husband's family. At some point they spelled their name DEvenport, then his dad and uncle changed it to DA. They came from Arkansas, but I can't find them listed. They are John Wesley (JW) Davenport b. Jan.23, 1885 in Dardenelle, AR m. Myrtle Gertrude Pinson. John's father was John Polk Davenport, m. Mary Jane Hudson. I have siblings of John Wesley and some of the spouses. I'd appreciate some guidance on this. Thanks, Jann Davenport
Hi, Wally, do you have more information on the eight children of Benjamin and Phoebe and their decendants? I have a Thomas Davenport who married Jane Kimble. One of their children was William Davenport b 1864. He married Martha Rome. We believe Thomas and Jane were from the Kingston, NY area. We have no info on them no birthdates, deathdates, marriagedates. I'm hoping I might find a connection in your family. Chris Strube :)
<< Can someone help me with this: I have material from the Ontario Co, NY Historical Soc. which tells me about a Cornelius DAVENPORT married to Elizabeth COLE with children: Aaron (1842), Jacob (1848), Moses (1833) and Humphrey (1767). This last one doesn't seem to fit. Not only the name, but also the birthdate...and of course, he is the one I'm interested in! Does anyone else have Cornelius and Elizabeth? I'd appreciate hearing form you. Thanks. Mary Lou Garland >> I have a Cornelius Briggs DAVENPORT who married Susan A. - A being her middle initail, her last name is unknown. Susan died 23 Dec 1857, so she would have likely been born in 1778. Cornelius & Susan are buried in the family plot in the Cold Springs Cemetary - Lockport, Niagara, NY. Cornelius & Susan were the parents of Benjamin Stockton DAVENPORT b. 3 Dec 1803 probably in either Newtown, Erie, NY or Elmira, Chemung, NY. Newtown is about 45 miles south of Lockport where the family ended up living & dying; Elmira is about 70 miles SE of Palmyra, Wayne, NY, where Benjamin's wife was born, so either place could be possible. Benjamin married Phoebe ALLEN b. 23 Sept 1810 in Palmyra, Wayne, NY. Both Benjamin & Phoebe are buried in Cold Springs Cemetary - Lockport, Niagara, NY. Benjamin & Phoebe had 8 children. Among them were Cornelius Briggs DAVENPORT II & Thomas William DAVENPORT. Thomas then was the father of Cornelius Briggs DAVENPORT III. Here's a theory: Your Humphrey, born in 1767 was the father of my Cornelius, for whom I have no birth year. If Cornelius was born in 1785, Humphrey would have been 18 years old. Cornelius then would have been 18 years old in 1803 when Benjamin was born. Humphrey then had another son who's grandson was named Cornelius, after his great-uncle. This would be the Cornelius that you have in Ontario County, since it isn't likely that Humphrey, born in 1767, was having children in 1842, at age 75. Palmyra, Wayne, NY, where Benjamin's wife Phoebe ALLEN was born is about 7 miles north of the county line of Ontario Co, NY, where you are finding your DAVENPORTs. Which would tie the families geographically. This is just a theory, but what do you think? Wally Walter Allen DAVENPORT II
