    1. Re: [DAVENPORT] Kentucky census for 1830,1840
    2. Dianna Rose
    3. Hi Earl: I don't want to be discouraging, but the 1830 census records for Kentucky only list the head of household. There were numerical designations for male/female and ages but not an individual listing. I don't have a copy of an 1840 census here at home, but I believe the household members weren't listed until 1850. Since he was only 4/14 years old, it would be unlikely that he would be a head of household. I will keep my eyes open for you in other documents, but I'm afraid this avenue is closed as far as a census listing. 2. Ralph Royce
    3. This Charles Davenport is the son of Richard Davenport of Albemarle Co. Va. and his first wife. Richards second wife is the widow Elizabeth Hamner, the step-mother mentioned in Charles' will. Are there any descendants of Destaing Davenport on this list? 1 Jan 1806 (Abbeville Co. SC WBI) Charles Davenport to beloved wife that part of my land cont. 270 ac. and at her decease divided between my two youngest daughters Charlotte and Kitty, son Burkett, to son (Delang?) I give $3.00 in addition to what I have already given him., son in law James Pollard….my negro Charles left me by my father Richard Davenport and also 1/5 of an estate left during the life of my step-mother Elizabeth Davenport, to daughter Polly Thompson Davenport, son John Marshall Davenport, Nancy Davenport, Burkett Davenport not 21 residue of land equally divided. >From Will Abstracts of Edgefield Co. SC is the will of Lewelling Goode dated 11 Sept 1812 and witnessed by D. E. Davenport who on "25 Sept 1812 personally appeared Dytaing Davenport and William Williams as witnesses to the will of L. Goode". Then on 17 Jan 1822 the will of Daniel Williams was proved on oath of Destaing Davenport. On 9 Nov 1826 the will of James Bullock was witnessed by D. Davenport. The 1830 and 1840 census index of Edgefield Co. SC has D. E. Davenport. The children of Charles Davenport include: Charlotte Davenport Kitty Davenport Burkett Davenport Destaing Davenport daughter who married James Pollard Polly Thompson Davenport John Marshall Davenport Nancy Davenport

    1. Re: [DAVENPORT] Re: A John Davenport as a son of John of Martin
    2. To Doc & Marcia: I have several uncles & great-uncles who were named Jack, not John, and was told by my Davenport grandmother that they were named after ancestors "way back when" who had the given name Jack. They were very proud of it, and always corrected people who wanted to change their name to John just because "that's the way it's usually done." I do think it possible that the people you mentioned were actually named Jack, and that while sometimes this was a nickname for John, that wasn't always the case. MargoBelle

    1. [DAVENPORT] Re: A John Davenport as a son of John of Martin
    2. Marcia: You questioned whether there could have been both a Jack Smith Davenport and a John Davenport among the children of John Davenport, Sr., son of Martin of Hanover. Good question, well posed. Point of Fact: Jack Smith was Jack Smith everywhere he appeared in Virginia records, no exceptions. The John Smith label was a DAR cook-up so a descendant of Jack Smith, apparently ignorant of the fact her ancestor was a true Revolutionary hero in his own right, having been mortally wounded at Guilford Courthouse, manipulated his name to John so she could paste the Continental Line service of Corporal John Davenport, son of James of Martin, on to Jack Smith and get into the DAR thereby. All of which occurred. As to there having been a son John as well as a son Jack Smith for John, Sr., there is a record in Louisa County Court Orders, 1774-1782, citing a judgment obtained by Hart & Marshall against John Davenport, Sr., and John Davenport, his security, in 1774 for L48. Previous thereto, William Davenport, Jr., married to the Widow Pulliam, had been John, Sr.'s security. Both William, Jr., and John married heiresses, acquired the resources following marriage to be John, Sr.'s security. Until in-laws put a stop to the squandering of the estates on John, Sr.'s hopeless financial condition, both sons apparently supported their father. There is now evidence that John, Sr., was in Louisa until 1778, when he either died unprobated or moved south to Charlotte with his son William Davenport, Jr. (The "Jr." appellation was operative only in Spotsylvania and Louisa records.) When John Davenport, security to John, Sr., disappeared from Louisa records, a John Davenport, married to Elizabeth Carter, appeared in Spotsyslvania records, and opened a tavern west of Spotsylvania Court House. He apparently had contempt for authority, for he was constantly being indicted by the Grand Jury for selling liquor with a license over a decade or more. In his later years, he gave up the tavern and ran a grist mill. No John Davenport appeared in Charlotte County records until John Davenport, later Jack Smith Davenport, son of Jack Smith, was noted in Charlotte Orphans Court and Land records. So, while we do not have proof, we are tightening the circumstantial evidence. There is utterly nothing yet found to connect John Davenport the Younger, Spotsylvania Tavernkeeper, with Richard Davenport of Caroline, other than the circumstantial naming of his eldest son Richard. Among Richard, Sr., of Caroline's believed male descendants, there was a Richard, Jr., a David, an Absalom, a Gideon, a Reuben, a Francis, and a Joseph in evidence, but no John or suggestion thereof. We are working on a better identification of the Davenport-Smith connection. There are a number of the Rootsweb interested. John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ

    1. [DAVENPORT] Kentucky census for 1830, 1840
    2. To Earl: I'll try to go through my Kentucky indexes tonight for you to see what I can find, but I have to agree with Diana Rose who said that only the name of the head of the household is listed in the 1830 and 1840 census. What I will try to do, though, is give you the names of all the Davenport heads of households in those two censuses, provided there aren't too many, and that should give you any number of possible counties to consider. Then you might try the genealogical societies in those counties to see what you can find. Finding a child in those years by using the census is going to be difficult, but we'll see what we come up with. MargoBelle

    1. Re: [DAVENPORT] Jack Smith Davenport
    2. A bit of context for Margo's LW&T of Jack Smith Davenport: Jack Smith Davenport was mortally wounded at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in North Carolina on March 15, 1781. All of four witnesses to the LW&T cited appear to have been associated with St. Martin's Parish, Louisa County, suggesting that Jack Smith had either gone back to his father's last known location in Louisa County to die, or that a delegation of Louisa Countians happened to be in his Charlotte County neighborhood when he was on his death bed. The two Ragland witnesses were sons of Samuel Ragland, Esqr., of St. Martin's Parish, Louisa, of whom we have written earlier. Witness Philip King had a brother named Smith King, which suggests a kinship of some sort with the testator. John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ
