    1. [DAVENPORT] Thomas Minor Davenport
    2. Judith Wood Henderson
    3. This is my first mailing to the list. Hopefully, some of you Davenport sleuths out there will be able to connect with this family. Thomas Minor Davenport, b: Sept. 29, 1821 in Alabama, d: March 20, 1886 in Louisiana, m. Narcissia Watts Lowe in Mississippi, June 30, 1847. Federal census list Thomas Minor's father as being born in South Carolina and his mother in Tennessee. In a 1960 interview, one of his granddaughters said that she thought his mother's name was either Lucinda or Amanda Kinchelow and his father's name was either David, Joseph, or Thomas. Family bible pages list the names of his children as being: David William Davenport, b: June 11, 1849 John M. Davenport, b: October 31 1850 James Nathan Davenport, b: June 17, 1853 Thomas L. Davenport, b: January 26, 1856 Martha A. J. Davenport, b: January 16, 1859 Mary Mildred Davenport, b: March 31, 1861 Amanda C. Davenport, b: March 7 1864 Son Davenport, b: July 26, 1866 Joseph Davenport, b: September 5, 1868 This Davenport family lived in or near Leake co. Mississippi, moved to Calcaseau parish, Louisiana after 1868 but before 1870, and then some of them moved into South Texas around 1900. Family tradition says Thomas Minor Davenport drowned while crossing the Red River. Who were the parents of Thomas Minor Davenport? Who were the siblings of Thomas Minor Davenport? 1. Re: [DAVENPORT] Thomas Minor Davenport
    2. Judith: I'm not sure who Thomas Minor Davenport's ancestors were, but I can tell you considerable about Thomas Minor. The Minors and the Pamunkey Davenports of Spotsylvania County were closely associated, if not related, from the mid-1740s through 1814 at least. Thomas Minor, Jr., had an outstanding career during the Revolution, as an officer of Virginia State Troops, of the Continental Line, and of the Militia. There were few important battles in which he did not participate, north of, south of, and in Virginia. His grandfather John Minor, father Thomas Minor, Sr., and he lived in the same neighborhood as did William Davenport, Sr., son of Martin of Hanover, and often appear in concert with various Davenports in public records--in Spotsylvania, Louisa, and Culpeper counties. Captain Thomas Minor and David Davenport (a son) were the executors of the LW&T of William Davenport, Sr. I have long suspected an in-law relationship between the Davenports and Minors, but never worked the hypothesis hard enough to get an answer one way or another. Insofar as your Thomas Minor Davenport's having had a father born in South Carolina, there were two possibilities from the Minor-associated Pamunkeys from Spotsylvania County: namely John Davenport and Thomas Davenport, both sons of William, Sr., of Spotsylvania. John had moved to North Carolina to join his brother Augustine in the late 1770s. Thomas Davenport, likely the youngest son, enlisted in the Virginia Continental Line during the Revolution, serving in Captain Thomas Minor's Company as I recall, then hung around Spotsylvania County until the mid-1790s. He then moved to Randolph County, North Carolina, joining his brother John. Within a year or so after Thomas had moved to North Carolina, both he and John uprooted and moved to Laurens County, South Carolina. Both died there. Thomas had two wives--the first a Partlow from Spotsylvania, the second a Wharton from Laurens. John's wife is yet unidentified as to surname. Both John and Thomas left LW&Ts. As I recall John had a son Thomas, but I do not believe that Thomas had one so named. There are a number of missing links in the families of both of the Pamunkey Davenports of Laurens County, SC, one of which may well be yours. John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ

    2. Do any of you know anything about the Davenport family who lived around the Phenix City, Al. area? I am trying to link Daisy Davenport who was my mother's aunt. I believe Daisy may have been related to the Hopkins family. My grandmother was Ida Belle Hopkins Epperson (1883-1949). Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    1. Re: [DAVENPORT] James Davenport of Newberry
    2. I appreciate you clarification on this. Yes, my original material came from a DAR record but was developed by my mother's great aunt who was born in the 1870', I think. I would have thought her to be accurate with her going only back three generations. I know that the LDS records are very often wrong for they are dead wrong in many of my known relatives. Another reason I was prone to believe that he was NOT a Tory was his wife, Elizabeth , whose family were (according to what I have) patriots and the Davenport home was burned to the ground, her brother shot in front of their home and all their people butchered. I have that Elizabeth only escaped by hiding. All of this could be in error as I have not been a good researcher as to recording sources and such. It has only been in the last couple of years I have worked on this line. You mentioned him as being a second son... of whom? One brother Isaac and grandfather , Isaac. Would you share who his father was and other siblings? this James has been my brickwall for so long. I have other lines back to England and some before 1066. Would like to connect all the Davenport material I have back to the early 18th century. Thank you for your reply in advance. Carolyn Clements

    3. Many thanks for the comments of Pauline. It is in the best interest of all Newberry Davenport researchers that we help clear the confusion about James Davenport who married Elizabeth Gilliam. 1. He was just James, not James Madison. 99% of all babies named James Madison were born while President James Madison was in office. Actually James Davenport was born about the same time as James Madison and certainly would not have been named for him. Second, James had no brothers or sisters with two given names. Third, There was no custom in the colonies of giving two Christian names or given names at the time James Davenport was born. 2. The chances are good that James was born in the 1750's and not in 1742 as is commonly reported. Otherwise he would have been about 35 at the time of the birth of his first child. It has sometimes happened but hardly fits the norm. James' brother, Isaac Davenport, was born in 1752 as confirmed by his tombstone. I believe that Isaac was the firstborn and named for his grandfather, Isaac Davenport, d. 1749 in Granville Co., NC. I also believe James was likely the second son and born around 1754 in Granville County, NC. However, I am always willing to change my thinking if someone can present a primary document showing proof that James was born in 1742. Keep in mind that DAR records and LDS records are not primary records. 3. The proof has been found in the military records in London related to the American Revolution. Both Isaac (my ancestor) and James were Tories. And I am sure their allegiance at the time was based on conviction. Keep in mind that quite a number of Tories were recruited in the Little River section of Newberry County, SC and most of those were respected citizens in their community following the war, including Isaac and James.

    1. [DAVENPORT] re: reliable research
    2. Thank you Doc for your expose' regarding the need for supportive documentation to prove/disprove an ancestral line. An instance of this is basically what motivated me to dig deeper into my branch of the Pamunkey Davenports. (Of course, at the time I knew nothing of the name Pamunkey.) A cousin of mine was so desperate to get her supplemental accepted on our Davenport line that somehow she was able to convince the DAR that we descended from Augustine, through his son David. This never made any sense to me after researching the records for this David, s/o Augustine, so I persisted, w/o consulting my cousin, who I am sure was happy to have her supplemental accepted. Being accepted into the DAR was never a main goal for me, so I guess that was beneficial in motivating me to keep digging until I found the truth. If it were not for the many other Davenport researchers that I began corresponding with here online (before there was a Davenport roots list), it would have taken longer to sort out the misinformation from facts. Fortunately, I have learned from these same researchers (through observation and information) where and how to keep digging. My David Davenport is the son of Martin that moved into Burke County, NC with his father, Thomas, from Culpepper County, VA. I have since accumulated enough records flowing down from Martin to verify the relationship. I am thankful to be part of such a wonderful group of people. Sincerely, Angela Groenhout p.s. I did get into the DAR, not through the Davenport line, but another. The more that I learned of the "good work" that they do, the more I was pulled into the society.

    1. [DAVENPORT] Reliance on Research Done Years Ago and DAR Certifications
    2. For Pamunkey Davenports and Others Interested: A DAVENPORT-L Rootsweb subscriber wrote me privately yesterday to say that while she was not arguing with the conclusion that John Davenport, Sr., son of Martin of Hanover (d. 1735), had both a son named Jack Smith Davenport and a son named John Davenport, her research indicated that on at least two occasions Jack Smith's name had appeared as John Smith Davenport in Charlotte County, Virginia, records. Hence, she could not accept the statement that invariably, without exception, Jack Smith always appeared in the records as Jack Smith. The sources she cited were secondary, i.e., were from a source that had either abstracted or extracted from an original records, or weaker yet, were from a source that had copied from a secondary source or tercerary source, ad infinitem. Fortunately, I had abstracts/extracts from those original records. Also, where she cited one deed in 1779, I found two. Here are the substantive facts extracted from those two deeds, one of which allegedly recorded Jack Smith as John Smith: 31Jul1779 - Deed: William Harvey, Jr., wife Drusilla, to Richard Davenport, all of Charlotte County, for L460, 150 acres in Charlotte County, adjoining Jack Smith Davenport, said Richard Davenport, John Wilson, Decd., and John Robinson... /s/ William Harvey, Jr., Drusilla Harvey. Wit: Thomas Paullet, Jack S. Davenport. (Charlotte County, VA, Deeds, 4:181) 9Dec1779 - Deed: Samuel Webb, of Buckingham County, to William Davenport, of the Colony of Virginia, for L200, 280 acres in Charlotte County on Long Creek, now in the possession of John Wood, adjoining Richard Davenport, Jack Smith Davenport, John Hunter, John Clayton, and James Overton... /s/ Samuel Webb. Wit: Richard Davenport, Jack S. Davenport, William Harvey, Jr. (Charlo tte County, VA, Deeds, 4:176) The careful reader will note that not only did the original conveyances identify the bounding landowner as Jack Smith Davenport, that Jack Smith himself apparently witnessed both deeds, signing himself as "Jack S. Davenport." If his legal signature was John S. Davenport, he ignored two opportunities to make the fact known. My correspondent also cited Jack Smith's appearance in Charlotte County Court records in 1780 when he was recommended for a commission in the Militia, stating that her source had given the name as John Smith there also. Here's what my full quotation of that Court Order is: 4Dec1781 - Militia Service: "Ordered that Jack Smith Davenport be recommended by this Court to his Excellency the Governor to be Ensign in Captain William Harvey's Company of Militia, in place of John Barksdale who stands recommended to the rank of Second Lieutenant in said Company." (Charlo tte County, VA, Court Orders) Clearly my correspondent's source or sources had either cooked the books (purposely changed Jack to John) or had used a source that did. When you take into account the fact that the DAR Patriot Certification of Jack Smith Davenport as Corporal John Davenport (who was Jack Smith's cousin, the son of James Davenport, Sr., of Hanover County, Virginia, and Ogelthorpe County, Georgia) predated my correspondent's sources, it is not difficult to determine where the error began. Those who followed either took the DAR identification as gospel or had a vested interest in continuing the misrepresentation. When faced with a contradiction between the original record and the DAR certification, the DAR won. Unfortunately, that happens too often. Much of the nagging error permeating both Pamunkey Davenport and Newberry Davenport genealogy today can be traced to erroneous DAR certifications. Lest someone conclude that I am anti-DAR, I note that I am a past president of the Utah Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), am a current active member of the Society, and that my wife is a member of Unitah Chapter, Utah Society, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The SAR and the Marine Corps League (Semper Fi) are my memberships of prime interest. My wife's greatest interests are the DAR and the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. I am not anti-DAR, but I am anti-erroneous certifications--and I've encountered at least a dozen in my research, three of which have plagued Davenport genealogy. Jack Smith Davenport's certification as a Patriot was right for the wrong reason--he was eligible in his own right for he made the supreme sacrifice, and those qualifications, readily ascertainable if the research had been done, need not have been sullied by a descendant's lazy hooking on to his cousin John's Continental Line service and creating thereby the genealogical consternation over John vs. Jack that has followed. DAR and SAR Certifications should not be taken as gospel unless there is corroboration in primary records. (I can cite one DAR Patriot certification of a man who accepted a commission as a Captain in the King's Loyal Militia, was on the British Army payroll for two years, who refugeed to Charleston with his family and went to East Florida with the British Army, where he was given his choice of going to Nova Scotia with the British or remaining in Florida as a subject of the King of Spain and converting to Catholicism, who so converted and died a subject of King of Spain in 1798, having never accepted the existence of the United States, yet who was certified as a Patriot by the DAR when one of his female descendants applied for membership, having hooked on to the military service of a man of similar name who fought under Colonel Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox. That's the worst one I've found yet, but there are several others that come close.) If you will examine the process whereby Patriots are certified by the DAR and who is doing the vetting, you can understand why classic examples of fraud, such as the one described above, can occur. It's inherent in the system. That's the DAR's problem. Our problem is blind reliance on those certifications. There is too much blind faith in old data and conclusions among Pamunkey Davenport family researchers. All research, including mine, should be vetted (to vet = to examine, investigate, and evaluate in a thorough, expert way) before being accepted. But as a matter of reality, few family searchers, genealogy being essentially a hobby or avocation, have either the time, the perspacity, or the desire to get that deep into the subject. When a hobby becomes hard work, it ceases to be fun. It's fish or cut bait. So corners are cut in dependence on authority. Acceptance of any authority, unfortunately, is commonplace, and the result, among the Pamunkeys at least--but it just as true in other families, is that the blind frequently are leading the blind. But then, who amongst us has the sight? Then too, there is a great deal more data available today than existed ten years ago. New evidence engenders new conclusion. The old conclusions, if no longer valid, should be assigned to the wastebasket--but they will not be. They will continue to circulate, and doubtlessly be hung on super web pages. Fifty years from now, old, disproven Davenport genealogy will still be circulated. Whatever, after that philosophical ramble, I again submit that Jack Smith Davenport invariably did appear as such in Eighteenth Century Virginia records. John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ

    3. Hi, It is interesting to hear from you again. Mr. Bedenbaugh was helpful in getting the deed for the property that William Adams bought from Joseph Davenport. William Adams, according to preponderance of evidence, was the father of Martha "Patsy" Adams, who married my Raymond Davenport, son of James and Elizabeth Davenport. He called me and asked what I wanted him to do, and that was what I asked of him, even though I live in SLC UT and the LDS FHL is so close. I had tried to find the deed on my own, but something was amiss with the film, and I was glad to pay him to go to the actual records locally and copy it for me. I know he would do more research for me if I ask him, but my pocketbook went dry about then, and I haven't asked him for any more. I would like to learn what happened to Raymond's first three daughters, but that will have to wait. Thank you for asking. Pauline Guffin, R. 3. My ancestor is James Davenport and Elizabeth Gilliam's son, Raymond, who was born in 1788, according to the 1850 Census in Muscogee Co. Ga. When you look in the Newberry Abstract records, you will not find a James Madison Davenport listed until you come to son Jonathan's son, who was named James Madison. Have you checked out the Davenport page with its Newberry section by John Scott Davenport, showing from actual records that the Davenports WERE Loyalists? Do some of your own research, and see for yourself. Pauline Besides, what does it matter if they were Loyalists? That happened a long time ago, and they were doing what they thought was right. Many such men were loyal to the King of England because he granted them land, and they felt they needed to be true to that. I also have Burnside Loyalist ancestors in neighboring Laurens Co, SC. and that's all right, too. They paid dearly for their differences with the Patriots. Since Glover disappears from the Pr. Edward tax lists in 1815 and does not show up there again, I propose that this is Glover Davenport son of Richard of Charlotte. If that is the case then who is the Glover in Campbell in 1810? What happened to David’s son Glover?

    2. My relative James Madison Davenport was born in 1742 and married Elizabeth Gilliam. Their son was Charles who married Sara Gary. The children of this James Madison were Lucretia, Jonathan, Raymond and Martha...all born from 1778 to 1787. Have a list of aunts and uncles too.... check it out and see if you think it wi yuour line. LDS is all wet with their listings, As is the DAR records. there are atl least three James Madison Davenports reported to have been Elizabeth Gilliam's husband., and all of these from different parts of the country. One has him a REV. hero, another a Tory traitor. Who knows? Take your pick, eh??? Carolyn Clements
