    1. Re: [DAVENPORT] Your Davenport Roots--Indiana and Brethren Clues
    2. Ginger: There was a Pamunkey Davenport line that was in Indiana and Brethren, namely the family of Noah Davenport and Catherine Stutzman, of Miami County, Ohio, and Elkhart County, Indiana. If I recall correctly, the Davenports settled around Wakarusa in Elkhart in the mid-to-late 1830s. Noah, b. 1796, Randolph County, NC, was the son of Martin Davenport, son of Augustine Davenport, Sr., of Rowan County, NC. His mother was Mary Magdalene Mast, of the renown Mennonite Mast family. Martin died May-June1798 while returning from a land scouting trip with Mast brothers-in-law and their Hoover Kin (later mine also) in the Northwest Territory. He drowned in the Ohio River near Cincinnati, with a verdict of "Death by Misadventure" by a Territorial Coroner's Jury. In the Fall of 1801, Noah's mother having given birth to a posthumous son Martin (Oct1798) and having married John Waggoner, joined the Hoovers, Masts, and Davenports in the first of many migrations of Randolph Carolinians north of the Ohio River. Noah was five-years-old when his Mother and new Stepfather took him and his brother Martin to the open, yet untamed frontier in the new State of Ohio. He grew up on the Upper Stillwater (Montgomery-Miami counties) in a community that included Brethren, Quakers, Universalists, and New Lights among others--he apparently opting for the Brethren discipline by his marriage to Catherine Stutzman of the strongly Brethren line. [There are Stutzmans among the Amish today. There are Stutzmans who are Church of the Brethren today. Then there was Jacob Stutzman, Sr., minister of the Brethren congregation in Randolph County, NC, who was excommunicated by Annual Meeting in 1799 for holding to Universalist doctrine. Rev. Jacob (a grandfather of mine) left North Carolina with the Masts, Hoovers, and Davenports in the Fall of 1801, but he and his family split off from the folk going to Ohio and settled in the Illinois Grant at the Falls of the Ohio (now Clark County, Indiana. These latter Dunkers were known as Far Western Brethren and merged into the Disciples of Christ around 1830. The Brethren Stutzman family into which Noah married was strongly Annual meeting (orthodox) and remained so for at least a hundred years. Noah Davenport and his children followed Annual Meeting precepts.] I did not trace the Elkhart Davenports much past the Civil War, but I know from reading Indiana Brethren History that there were Davenports active in the Church as late as the early 1900s. I believe some of the Elkhart Davenports later were in Hawaii, then California. I have been told that Lindsay Davenport, the current Tennis star, is a descendant of the Brethren Davenports, but I've seen no documentation to that effect. If you can connect yourself back to the Elkhart County Brethren Davenports, I can provide you with considerable family history on both the Davenports and the Stutzmans. 1. [DAVENPORT] Davenport-Scroggins-Lacy
    2. While researching my husband's Rinehart and Nance lines in Tishomingo Co.,MS, I found references to a DAVENPORT, Robert, admir., LACY,Calvin and a SCROGGINS, William. Robert Davenport was listed 16 times in the 1854 probate site and 13 times in the 1855 probate site. Lacy was mentioned 5 times on those sites. Robert Davenport was also listed under the Official bonds 1848-1859 as sheriff. Scroggins was listed in the 1840 census. This is a very informative site for anyone looking for those names or doing research in that area of Mississippi. The site is: rootsweb.com/~mstishom/research.html Happy Hunting! Jane

    3. Hi, My 8th Great Grandfather was Captain Richard Davenport who came over in 1628 with John Endicott. In 1629 he married Elizabeth Hathorne. They settled in Salem of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Elizabeth was the sister of William Hathorne that came over with her. Williams son John was the Judge at the Salem witch trials in 1692. John was Nathaniel Hawthornes ? great grandfather. He changed the spelling on his name to further himself away from the trials. The Hathornes were quite wealthy in England. She could be the one he was talking about. Capt. Richard was killed by lightening when he was Captain of the arsenal at Castle Island in Boston Bay in 1665. Elizabeth died in 1678. Hope this helps, Janice Davenport Todd PS....one of the people that John Hathorne had hung was Rebecca Towne Nurse. 1. [DAVENPORT] Article in Newspaper in Virginia in 1950- 1970
    2. This articlewas found in my great-grandmothers scrapbook. Its dated back in the early 1950 to 1970, Depending on the Newspaper at that time. It was either the Orange Review or the Orange Obseverer in Virginia. Article states: Davenport--This is an English place name accquired from living in the township of the same name in East Cheshire. The meaning is ' gate on the Dane ' ( a river). orte is the latin word for " entrance, door, gate. Some of these early people were Orm De (of) Davenport,1166; and Ralph De Davenport,1415; both of Cheshire. The wills of John Davenport of Henbry,1415 and Ralph Davenport of Prestbury, 1555, are on file in Chester; Richarde Davenport was buried in the Prestbury Churchyard in 1593; Thomas Davenport was baptized in the same church in 1594. The name is also found as Devenport and Devanport. The coat of arms will be found in the 1884 edition of Burkes General Armory on page 265, and in the supplement. The glossary on page xxviii might help you draw your own. Ann and Edward Davenport arrived in Virginia from England ,1637 and 1643, respectively. Hannah Davenport arrived in 1650. Richard, the Rev. John and Thomas Davenport were noted in New England in 1628,1637,and1640. This may help others who are looking also. Cathy CHONAN2944@aol.com

It states as follows: "Your great, great, great, great grandmother had these cups, when she married," said Hepzibah to Phoebe. "She was a Davenport, of a good family. They were almost the first tea-cups ever seen in the colony; and if one of them were to be broken, my heart would break with it."
