    1. [DAVENPORT] Re: Families of Martin, son of Augustine Davenport, Sr.
    2. Ginger and Any Other Davenports Interested in this Family: I dipped into my Elkhart County, Indiana, files which I last accessed on 11Dec1977, and here's what I have on your Brethren Davenport ancestry: MARTIN DAVENPORT, son of Augustine Davenport, Sr., and Mary Harris of Rowan County, NC. At least 12 children, but only 8 identified (one boy and three girls born between 1822 and 1830 possibly died in childhood): All surnamed DAVENPORT. MARTIN was a posthumous son, grew up among the Annual Meeting Dunkers of Southwestern Ohio but rejected their tenets of pacifism and nonjurrance, moved to Marion County, IN, within a few years of his marriage where he was active in the Militia (an elected Captain), Court affairs, and later a Squire himself. In Marion County in the mid-to-late 1820s he was actively associated with his first cousin Austin (Augustine) Davenport, one of the presiding justices of the Marion County Court. In 1830, JP Austin Davenport was commissioned by the Governor of Indiana to organize Boone County, immediately north of Marion, during which Austin was elected Boone's first Sheriff. Thereafter, Martin and Austin were in different counties, but lived less than three miles apart. Martin and most of his sons were staunch abolitionists, and in the late 1850s moved to "Bloody Kansas" to support the antislavery forces there. In later Censuses, the children of Martin were found in Central Indiana, Western Missouri, and Eastern Kansas. I conducted no detailed research on Martin's family after 1850, being engaged elsewhere. 1. Re: [DAVENPORT] Your Davenport Roots--Indiana and Brethren Clues
    2. Ginger: Delighted to be of help. With your known connections, you are definitely a Pamunkey Davenport. Note the spelling "Pamunkey," the name of an Indian tribe which still has a reservation in Pamunkey Neck (otherwise King William County, Virginia). The Pamunkeys were the most powerful of the tribes of the Powhatan Confederation. John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ

    1. Re: [DAVENPORT] Your Davenport Roots--Indiana and Brethren Clues
    2. In a message dated 11/19/99 1:12:04 PM US Mountain Standard Time, JSDDOC@aol.com writes: << There was a Pamunkey Davenport line that was in Indiana and Brethren, namely the family of Noah Davenport and Catherine Stutzman, of Miami County, Ohio, and Elkhart County, Indiana. If I recall correctly, the Davenports settled around Wakarusa in Elkhart in the mid-to-late 1830s. >> Doc, Thank you for the information and a clear hope that I'll be able to tie in with all the Pamucky research that has been ongoing. I've made copies of everything to store in my general Davenport file in the hope some day that link might show up. My Davenport line starts with my Great Grandmother Laura Fiona Davenport Ruth Jones, born 18 July 1886 in Elkhart, Elkhart County, Indiana. She was the daughter of Noah M Davenport (born Aug 1852 in Indiana) and Susannah Greenwalt (born Aug 1852 in Ashland County, Ohio). I've just recently made contact with a daughter of one of Laura's sisters. She's 74, but seems to be very sound of mind and loved remisicing with a couple of cousins for me. I have a couple of pictures of Noah and Susannah among my prized possessions. I probably would have had more, but one of my uncles destroyed a rather large box of family photographs because "he" couldn't identify them. He's lucky he's still walking the earth <g> Laura and my grandmother were very active in the Brethren church (known more commonly as the Dunkard church in the Elkhart area). Susanna Greenwalt Davenport, according to my newfound second cousin, thrice removed, was active in the Brethren church until her death. With your clues, I'll be searching closer again. I had already stumbled across the Noah you mentioned in the 1850 Cenus. Noah and his mother, Catherine (who had remarried). I thought this was my Noah as there was also a Susanna in the household, but realized that my Noah hadn't made his appearance yet. I saved the information as I felt for sure this was a Noah M.'s father more than likely. Then a clue showed up about my Great grandfather Wilson who was murdered when my grandmother was a mere 5, and my Davenport research got set aside temporary. Confused? :-) I confuse my mentor at times. He is searching for records on only his great grandfather, with the intention of writing a book on the man's life. Whereas I'm doing it generation by generation. But I don't turn away when I stumbled on things out of order. I'm still waiting on a lot of vital records, and so I move onto the one of the others. Your leads have inspired me to order even more film from my local FHC after the holiday. Just in passing, two of my Noah's brothers, John and Lee, did head for California - Los Angeles area where they apparently made a great deal of money in the citrus business. Cousin Helen remembered tales of John and his wife taking trips through the Panama Canel. Apparently, they continue to buy their new cars through Elkhart. She also remembered Christmas checks from "Uncle John." Thanks so very much for all the background you were able to provide. Give me a couple of months and I'll have that line ready to lay claim to the Pamucky line of Davenports. ;-) Ginger (whoisofftofindthearchivessoshecanfindtheassociationsaddressagain)

    1. [DAVENPORT] DAVENPORT/ROLLINS Connection?
    2. Sally Haithman
    3. Hi, Everybody! I am trying to find out more about my great great-grandmother, Anna Davenport. Her name was listed on my great-grandfather, George Rollins', death certificate. They were African American, and born in Missouri as slaves. I have narrowed down the probable Rollins slave owners/ancestors to three: James S. Rollins, Robert R. Rollins, or John W. Rollins, all of Boone County. There are also some Davenport slave owners in the area, listed on the 1860 Missouri census. There is also a woman listed as a witness on George Rollins' marriage certificate. Her name is Lucy Maria Warfield Rollins, and she has to be an important relative, somehow. Until I found out about Anna Davenport, I believed she was his mother. Does anyone have any hints about solving this puzzle? Sally Watts Haithman
