    2. JBlack: No one can help you if you do not identify name, date, county, and state of earliest ancestor. Not everyone, including me, is familiar with a Carleton County, and I'm not going to go looking. Frame of reference is important always in seeking help. Will be glad to do what I can, once I have a frame of reference. John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ

    3. Hello Joann, I to am looking for NJ Davenports. My interest is finding the parents, siblings etc. of Sarah Davenport, m 15 Sept. 1832, Isaac Ogden Wooley. I believe this would be either in Hunterdon , Morris or Sussex county. My information indicates they had two daughters, Harriet Ann Wooley and Margaret Marsh Wooley, b1835. Would be interested in your line to see if there are any connections now or in the future. Frank Heger: (New) rockcrag@msn.com (old) rockcrag@shianet.org

    3. Nancy DAVENPORT married Emberson LEDFORD on 22 Dec. 1902 at the residence of M.W. DAVENPORT in Shooting Creek, Clay County, NC. Both Nancy and Emberson were 35 years old. On the marriage license, Nancy was listed as the daughter of M.W. DAVENPORT (living) and Polly DAVENPORT (dead). Emberson was listed as the son of Curtis LEDFORD (living) and Susie LEDFORD (dead). They were married by W. M. ANDERSON, J.P. Wilburn LEDFORD applied for this license on 18 Dec. 1902. I have a copy of this marriage license that was recorded in Clay County, NC, but unfortunately, I didn't record the book and page number. Other information that I have on Nancy came from my uncle (age 85) who remembers her. He said that Nancy had a daughter named Mary LEDFORD who married Eiphriam FOSTER. He also said that Nancy died in Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas (where she lived) in 1940 or 1941 and believes that she is buried in Rose Cemetery in Washington County. This information has not been confirmed, should provide you with some good leads. -Sherryl ---------- > From: Lee Stufflebeam <leestufflebeam@netscape.net> > To: DAVENPORT-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [DAVENPORT] Northwest Arkansas Davenports > Date: Sunday, December 19, 1999 10:59 AM > > Dear "Mcguire", > My file information on Nancy is as follows: > Born 3/8/1866 Clay County NC, Died Madison County, Arkansas. > Married #1, James Ledford, had daughter Minnie. > Married #2, Unknown Burns, had daughter Mary. > Married #3, Unknown Hansinger, Children Unknown. > Lee > > > ==== DAVENPORT Mailing List ==== > View the Cousins Directory at > http://Jack.Ralph.org/davnport/others.htm > > ============================== > Personalized Mailing Lists: never miss a connection again. > http://pml.rootsweb.com/ > Brought to you by RootsWeb.com. >

    3. John Scott Davenport: I was intrigued by your letter below, and wonder if you can help me with a Davenport problem. I have Davenport roots which go back to Ambrose R. Davenport who was born in Richmond, Virginia on 11 September 1771. Other information about him is presented in the following obituary upon his death in 1858. He married a Mackinac Island woman named Elizabeth Blatchford. I have a great deal of information about his family and activities, but nothing about his parents and their roots. I just wonder if any of this "rings a bell" in your fabulous information about the Davenvports of Virginia which would pertain to Ambrose R. Davenport. Any information or suggestions at all will be greatly appreciated. Obituary in the Mackinac Herald of March 19, 1858 Death of Mr. Davenport.--It is with feelings of regret that we announce the death of one of our oldest and most respected citizens, Ambrose R. Davenport, who departed this life on Saturday evening last (about 11 May 1858), at the advanced age of eighty-seven and a half years. The demise of this gentleman who for many years was a prominent actor in the stirring scenes connected with the early history of the country, is an event that cannot fail to awaken emotions of grief in the breast of every citizen. Mr. Davenport was born in Richmond, Virginia, September 11, 1771, and emigrated to this island at the same time the Americans first took possession of Fort Mackinac in 1796, when the British Government surrendered the western posts to the United States, under "Jay's Treaty." He served in the army some eleven years; was in 1812, with the American troops made a prisoner of war, and taken to Detroit, where he was allowed to depart on parole. He returned in 1814, under Colonel Crogan, who made an unsuccessful attack on the Fort, at which time the brave Major Holmes was killed. This post was restored to the United States by the Treaty of Ghent, when he again returned, and ever since has reared a family of thirteen children, eight of whom survive; had fifty-six grand-children, forty-one of whom are living, and thirty-two great grand children, twenty-eight of whom are still alive - and most of them witnessed his last illness and death. Mackinac Herald, March 19th, 1858. Dr. Woodrow W. 2. Melanie of Greenville, NORTH CAROLINA: I goofed. I was looking at Greenville, missed the NC, assumed SC where there were a number of Newberry Davenports from 1800-on. Greenville, North Carolina, is another deal, certainly another Davenport line. By North Carolina locale, you are most likely an Albemarle Davenport, one of the many descendants of Richard and Johanna Davenport, who settled on the north side of Albemarle Sound in the 1680s, then moved across the sound to Tyrrell (and later Washington) County, then spread southwards. The last time I was in your Greenville was in the Spring of 1945 when as a 19-year-old Marine I was in the Officer Candidates Battalion, Camp Lejeune, and had a week end pass (48 hours). A buddy suggested that we hitch hike up to ECTC, Eastern Carolina Teachers College, and meet some girls. We did and we didn't. We thumbed our way up there, but we didn't meet any coeds. Seemingly every jarhead (marine), dogface (soldier), and swabbie (sailor) in the North Carolina Tidewater had the same idea. After recognizing that it was a crowd scene, and getting worse by the minute, we turned around and went back to Camp. But we got to see Eastern North Carolina in the Spring. On our next week end pass, we went to Wilmington, which wasn't a whole lot better, but at least they had more than one picture show. Sorry if I raised your hopes. John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ

    2. To Newberry Davenports: I wish you & yours a great holiday season. I came across this the other day about Isaac Davenport, son of Francis Davenport of New Jersey. He was a witness at these two marriages: 14 da, of march 1712/13 of his sister Rebecca Davenport to Josiah Kay 29th da, 9th mo, 1716 of Samuel Taylor & Anne Folkes. In 1716, he was 23 years old. b. 1693. So we know he was still in Burlington County until 1716. I can't find anything on him in New Jersey after that. While I'm at it, I'll post this to Davenport List. Peace, Bob

    2. Melanie of Greenville: By location and antecedents given, you're of Newberry Davenport descent. I am putting this reply on the DAVENPORT-L Rootsweb because there are a number of Newberries thereon who can help you trace your roots. I appreciate knowing that you have a brother named John Scott Davenport, for I will no longer consider myself unique in that regard. Although I really haven't thought too much about it--I started using the Scott back in 1948 when I was on the faculty of Indiana University and got called on the carpet by the University President because I had allegedly hit a policeman in Indianapolis while being drunk and disorderly. A case of mistaken identify which I easily established. The culprit had been a John A. Davenport of Fort Wayne, an ex-GI who was an IU graduate student. Thereafter, I was no longer John Davenport, was and have been since John Scott Davenport. I do have Scott ancestry (a great-grandmother was a Scott from Delaware), but I was named, according to my late Mother, for a best friend of my father, who was Chief of Police of Decatur, Illinois, when I was born, and had an assistant chief named Scott Guiliford. Great things are happening in Newberry Davenport research. A missing link is being worked on--which, if and when made, will connect the Newberry Davenports back to 1066 or thereabouts, and include a number of English nobles in the descent. Thank you for your kind comments. John Scott Davenport, Ph.D. Holmdel, NJ

    2. Cathy, I noticed something interesting in your e-mail. You wanted information on Martha Tanner Huddleston Davenport. My family comes from the" Newberry " Davenports, so I saw your message through that surname list. I am also researching my husband's family. I show one of his relatives, Sarah Adaline Street, marrying a William Tanner Huddleston.. He was born July 10, 1838 in Marshall Co., MS. do you think there could be any connection between those names? Jane L.
