MargoBelle, Thanks for the info on your Michigan Davenports. Unfortunately, those names are not, as far as I know, connected to my line. My line settled in Washtenaw County in Michigan. But I'll keep the info on file just in case! DEBBIE
John, Thank you for the Canada lead. Happy New Year! DEBBIE
To Debbie: Doc is correct in saying that William Fouts Davenport (1824-1902), my gg-gfather, also lived in Michigan. He had married Jemima Stanley in Wayne Co. In. in 1842 and they had 4 children in Indiana: Ellen Jane Davenport (1844-1866), Warren/Warner Davenport 1846-?, William Henry Davenport 1848-? and Jesse Lewis Davenport 1851-? They moved to Newaygo Co. Mi. sometime around 1851. My great-grandfather Edwin Francis Davenport was born there in 1856, then Byron S. Davenport was born in 1861. William and Jemima divorced sometime after 1880. William moved back to Carroll Co. Indiana where he then married Elizabeth Racard, then Rebecca Williamson. He died in Indiana in 1902. Jemima stayed in Michigan, moving to Paris (Mecosta Co.) Mi. where she died in 1894. She never remarried. 5 of their 6 children married in Michigan, either Newaygo Co. or Mecosta Co: Ellen Jane in 1862, Warren/Warner in 1864, William Henry in 1870, Jesse Lewis in 1874, and Byron S. in 1888. Edwin was a schoolteacher in Michigan. He moved to New Orleans where he went into the newspaper business and married my great-grandmother Margaret Louise Bolet in 1886. They moved around a lot, eventually settling in Austin, Texas where he died in 1931. I don't know if we have any Michigan connections or not! I do know that the names Byron, Lewis and Edwin appear over and over in my line. MargoBelle
Debbie: I know of no Davenport-Cole connections among the Pamunkey Davenports. I suspect that your "Ca" was more likely to be Canada than Carolina. The only Pamunkey Davenport who went to Michigan, to my knowledge, was William Davenport, son of Jesse Davenport of Wayne County, Indiana, who if I recall correctly married Jemima Stanley. But I don't believe that he stayed there. The preponderance of the Davenports in Michigan, except for Ambrose in the Upper Peninsula who was a Virginian and there very early, were from New York or Upper Canada. Quality people as I recall from my reading of twenty-five or more years ago. John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ
I have a history question, so JerseyDoc if you are reading this-please help! I have an 1850 census record for Michigan indicating that a Sarah Cole, age 15, being from "Ca". Does this stand for Carolina? If so, are there any connections in the North Carolina Davenports for a Cole family? My Davenport line in Michigan moved from Manchester, Ontario Co., New York, with a Humphrey Davenport, born 1767, married to Lucretia, children John (b. 4 June 1801), Cornelius (b. April 13, 1803), Rachel (b. 01 August 1811) and Abram (b. 1818). While these children were born in New York, as were most of their children, the above mentioned Sarah is listed living in the household of one of John's sons. We do not know where Humphrey and Lucretia are from, except that they seemed to migrate from New York with two other families headed by a John Decker and a Benjamin Cole to settle together in Michigan. The migration pattern north seems to go against the tide of those moving south and west or am I mistaken? Or does the "Ca" stand as an abbreviation for something else? Any info appreciated, DEBBIE
As a Newberry Davenport cousin, I say ditto, and thank you, Jack, for a wonderful year of hosting us on this list. Much good has come from it. Pauline in Salt Lake City, Utah Jack W. He is listed on the papers that I had.The last John Davenport that you had listed wasb.June 21, 1719 and died August 31, 1760 married Ely Rowhenson, daughter of Benjamin Rowhenson. Then there was Benjamin Davenport, born 1743,married Ann Temple, daughter of John Temple. Benjamin Died 1787 Then there was John Davenport who was born 1770 and married Ann Frances Willis, daughter of Frances and Sarah Mayo Willis in April 1793. John Davenport died 1830. Just found a Religious petition signed in Caroline Co, VA, December 5, 1777, Caroline, Favors assessment for support of religion which has Eldron and David Davenport on it. Do you recognized these two men? Does anyone have any other Davenport's that were in Caroline Co, Essex Co, or King & Queen Co, VA in the late 1700's? I am looking for a John Davenport that married Elizabeth Carlton c. 1789 but died before 1797. He had 3 children with one being Nancy Davenport who married John Anderson in Trigg Co, KY in 1816. They became some of the very early settlers of Graves Co, KY.
To Linda: I looked through my Davenport records, couldn't find one single entry for a Gunter. I tried alternate spellings of Guenther, Guenter, Gunther, still nothing. Were you able to find any 1920 Texas census for him, or just the 1910? With as little information as you have, about the only place I can see to begin is with the Cherokee County, Tx. sources: the genealogical society, the county courthouse, the public library and possibly the newspapers there. The Cherokee County Genealogical Society is located at P.O. Box 1332, Jacksonville, Tx. 75766. I'd try them first, be sure to give them all the names & dates you have. Possibly they have some cemetery or marriage records. The county courthouse is at 6th Street, Rusk, Tx. 75785. I would write them and ask for land records, will and probate records, etc. I don't know the local newspapers there, but contact the public library and find out what papers existed around 1910, then try writing them for announcements, obituaries, news items, etc. I did find Davenports in 6 or 7 Alabama counties around 1860. If you don't come up with anything else, let me know and I can give you all these county genealogical societies. It's kind of a wild guess, but it may produce something. Good luck! MargoBelle

Thanks to a fist cousin I have most of the imformation that I was looking for. My line starts with Ormus De Davenport, b.1086. tHE LINE GOES AS FOLLOWS: Ormus De.>Thomas De>Richard De>Vivian De>Roger De>Thomas De>Thomas>John>Robert>Robert> John>William>william>william>William>William>William>Peter>William>Humphrey>Jo hn>Benjamin>John>Peter>John T.>Edward>. Then it switches to another Surname in this line. If anyone has dates for the first 10 generations that would help. Can anyone do so? Cathy Honan
Merry Christmas to all the great people on the Rootsweb mailing lists. You brighten my life. MargoBelle
And a jolly and merry day to you and all other Davenport friends. June Johnson
Hey all you cousins, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and productive hunting to you! Love, Carol
Hello Everyone I hope someone out there may be able to provide additional information on my ggrandfather - Gunter Hunter Davenport. Most of the limited information I have comes from the 1910 Cherokee County, Tx Federal Census. He was born c1859 in AL, mrd Ida Bell ____ born c1870 in AL. They married c1888 in AL. I have no idea where in AL they were born/married. I also have no idea when or where they died. This was the first marriage for both of them. The children from their union: Geneva (was called Nivi), Nattie (twin of Geneva), Ira, Earnest, Jessie, Ollie (my grandmother), Louis, Hattie, Mattie, and Grady. To the best of my knowledge most, if not all, of the children were born in TX. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Gerry - There are a few things you can do to get information on your Burtis Davenport. Since you know that he died in 1962 in Augusta, Me., try obtaining his death certificate from the Kennebec County Health Department. This should have some clues as to the spelling of his name, his parents, possibly his occupation and next of kin, etc. It will also tell you where he's buried, so you can then contact the cemetery or funeral parlor for additional records. Then I'd write for his original Social Security application, since you have the Soc.Sec. number. This application will give his address, place of employment, parent's names, and much other genealogical information on him. Do you know if he served in World War I? He would have been the right age, born in 1892, he would have been 22 at the time it started. I'd try for military records at the National Archives, or possibly even the Maine State Archives. Then write to the genealogical society in the Mars Hill & Blaine areas. My map of Maine is quite incomprehensible as to counties, so I can't tell you whether these are in Aroostook or Washington Counties. The Aroostook county seat is at Houlton, Me. and the Washington county seat is in Machias, Me. Try the public libraries in each town or county, they should be able to give you the genealogical society addresses. Or, you might try finding them online through their websites. Then I'd write the two county clerks for Aroostook & Washington Counties for a marriage certificate for Burtis' father Wallace Davenport, if you have an approximate year. These things might give you some information and clues, allowing you to do more research. Good luck! MargoBelle
I am from the Summerfield, Carleton County Davenports and I cannot find anything--it's gone beyond a brick wall to the great wall of China or something. Can anyone help?
Dr. Morris: Ambrose has intrigued me for almost thirty years. I first found him in the Territorial Papers of the United States-Northwest Territory, Michigan Territory volumes. Are you aware of an Ambrose Davenport who had a tavern in Williamsburg prior to the Revolution? I am time pressed at the moment, but I would like to discuss with you the options relative to Davenport ancestry that a 1771 birth in Richmond suggest. Perhaps you might give me another query after the New Year if I don't remember. My first two children were born at the University Hospital in Iowa City. I was a lowly instructor in Journalism, working on a Ph.D. in Commerce. Got the degree in 1952, then went into Industry. Didn't go back to full-time academics until 1980, although I was adjunct at a half dozen schools at the graduate level in the interim. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We'll take on Ambrose soon.
