    1. [DAVENPORT] Early Davenports
    2. L K Knapper
    3. In reply to queries by Cathy Honan and Valmae Davenport regarding dates of the early Cheshire Davenports. Dating precisely births, marriages and deaths before the advent of parish registers in England is very difficult. One is always reliant upon deeds and legal documents of one sort or another. Nevertheless, you both might find the following interesting. It is gleaned from bits and pieces in my possession related to my research into my own Davenport line, of which the earliest ancestor so far I have is a Hughe Davenport of Bredbury Hall Nr Stockport in Cheshire alive and producing offspring in the 1630's and 1640's. Richard de Davenport Lord of Davenport and Marton(places in Cheshire) Little is know about this davenport except that he was the son of Thomas de Davenporte and Grandson of Richard de Dauneporte and great grandson of Ormus de Dauneporte It is likely that he was appointed supreme forester of the Forests of Leek and Macclesfield between 1153 and 1181. Vivian de Davenport.Lord of Davenport and Marton. He succeeded Richard as Lord of Davenport and Marton but in deeds is never described as being his son though it is entirely probable. His DOB is dependent upon when his parent Richard married. He was probably born before 1190. He was living in 1254. The only surviving original deed was one apparently dated after 1247 in which gifts are given to his younger son Richard comprising all his lands in the town of Macclesfield except the burgage of his eldest son Roger and the rent he held of Edmund de lacy constable of Chester and save a certain fourpenny rent which he gave tothe service of St Mary of Macclesfield. Vivian died between 1245 and 1249. Roger de Davenport.Lord of Davenport and Marton As a deed datable of between 1245 and 1249 puts Roger as of full age it is probable that he was born before 1228. He was living between 1268 and 1297. He died around 1297. Thomas de Davenport Lord of Davenport and Marton He was described as the eldest son and heir of Roger de Davenport. He acted as serjeant of the peace in 1290. He, his father Roger and his grandfather Vivian were named in the famous "Robber Roll" in which they were permitted to execute robbers within the Forest of Macclesfield and claim payment for their heads at Chester Castle. Thomas married Agnes daughter of Thomas de Macclesfield. Agnes must have died before 1309 because there is evidence that he took a second wife Roseria of Ralph de Vernon and widow of William de Brereton. Thomas died about 1320.Living between 1280 and 1320, Sir John de Davenport Lord of Davenport and Marton. He was the eldest son of Thomas de Davenport >From deed it is possible to say that he was alive between 1301 and 1370. He was knighted about 1336. He married Margery daughter of William de Brereton. (Marriage Settlement dated 1308) He married again to Agnes daughter of ....de Bradford. Marriage about 1359. Thomas de Davenport. He was his second son of Sir John de Davenport and first in the line of the Davenports of Wheltrough.(a place near Macclesfield in Cheshire) He was living between 1308 and 1347. John de Davenport Senior of Wheltrough. He was the second son of Thomas de Davenport of Wheltrough. Deeds have him alive in 1356, 1365 and 1372. He had two wives, with his first wife Elizabeth (alive in 1356 and 1360) he started the Davenports of Henbury line. With his second wife Margaret (in 1364 and 1390) he started the Davenports of Woodford line. Both places are in Cheshire. Hope the preceding will be of use to you. For the rest of you wondering what does this have to do with us? Scott Wiseman is a descendant of William WISEMAN who first married Mary DAVENPORT, d/o Thomas, s/o Martin, s/o Davis. However, I believe Scott is from William's 2nd wife Lydia Bedford's children. William fathered 19 and Scott took those old stories and wrote about them. Stories like The Battle of King's Mountain with his "Sweet Lips"...story of the young man who shot Ferguson. Seems he named his rifle for his girl in TN. There is also an area called "Wiseman's View" inside the Linville River Gorge named for this family and from here you see the famous "Brown Mountain Lights". Folks around here prefer Scotts version of those mysterious lights that have been seen for the past 200 years. When Scott died in 1981, he was buried in the churchyard that inspired him to write "Homecoming Time In Happy Valley". Lulu Belle died this year and rests beside him. They were a team 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year "This Is For Now And Forever". It's good to know those love songs were for someone as special as a beautiful mountain girl who was a real LuLu of a Belle. Thanks for letting me share with you. Elaine in Avery

    3. Janet, Several of William and Mary DAVENPORT Wiseman's descendants have gone into the DAR on his Patriotic Service. According to Dr. Emmett White's book "Revolutionary War Soldiers of Western North Carolina" Vol 2, William is mentioned as having made shoes for the troops. He was assisted by his 17 year old son Thomas, who was named for Mary's father. I hope this helps. Elaine in Avery

    2. Richard C. Davenport Sr.
    3. Janet, you have two Martin Davenports and I think you are confusing the two. Davis Davenport is the first in line that we have positive proof of. He was born around 1660 and died before 1735 in Va. His oldest son was Martin Sr., born around 1682 and died in 1735 in Va. He married Dorothy Glover. Their third child was Thomas, born 1711 in Va. and died in 1809 in N.C. He married Dorothy (?). Their fourth child was Martin, born around 1739 in Va. and died in 1815 in N.C. He was married to Hannah Baker and Martha Browning. This is the Martin who fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain and my gggg-grandfather........Richard Davenport ----- Original Message ----- From: monkey <monkey@goin.missouri.org> To: <DAVENPORT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 29, 1999 8:48 AM Subject: Re: [DAVENPORT] DAR Listings found on Davenports > On the DAR has any one found a list for Martin Davenport in Rev War. 2. Even if he did not serve in the military, if you have documentation regarding the army using his house, that use may qualify for "patriotic service" which has the same standing for DAR membership, if you are interested. If he is not in the DAR Patriot Index, it does not mean that he did not serve, only that no one named him for membership. DEBBIE
