Hi Janet in Missouri Have looked at your Davenports this morning. They all seem to be located in your country. If you need some help in continuing the line in the UK I need something to go on dates, places, names etc. My geographical area of Davenport research is in Lancashire and Cheshire, the family having kept close to the ancestral home. Best regards Leon Knapper
Greetings Cousins and List Members, old and new. Happy New Year! The State of Nevada has survived the Y2K "crisis"; things are getting back to normal; and I am back on the 'net. It's good to be home :-) Nevada had a few "incidents", but none turned out to be Y2K related. However, several hearts stopped beating for a few seconds at midnight on New Years Eve when a "reveler" released a metallic balloon into the air that drifted into some overhead power lines and shorted them out, tripping the circuit breakers at a nearby power substation. All the lights in downtown Carson City went out a few moments after midnight and near panic set in. Luckily, all the casinos, where everyone was celebrating, had backup generators that kicked in seconds later. However, that didn't satisfy all the politicians and media types who were partying with the public. They all raced to their cars (limos?) to get to "headquarters" to find out what was going on and what crisis we were facing [BTW, power was restored to downtown an hour later]. Me? I spent a boring evening at the OEM (Office of Emergency Management) Crisis Center. I would have rather been at home with my family and the many relatives who came to visit me for the weekend. I won't comment on the "Millennium" because I have been told many times that everybody wants to believe we just started a new one and that nobody cares about the truth (especially the media and the advertisers). However, just in case there are genealogists out there who want to know the truth, I have posted an article from the Washington Post on my web site. You can read it at http://users.intercomm.com/nvjack/millennium_debate.htm I would like to take this opportunity to inform the new list members, and remind the ones who have been here awhile, that we have a Davenport Genealogy Page. You can find it at http://users.intercomm.com/nvjack/davnport/index.htm For you old-timers who have "bookmarked" this page, please be aware that I have changed the address of the page from "davnport.htm" to "index.htm". However, not to worry, "davnport.htm" still works. I have changed the code to "redirect" your request to "index.htm". Please don't misunderstand my comments in the following paragraph. They do not refer to the DAVENPORT-L Rootsweb, which is open to all. They only refer to the web site that I own, manage and maintain. Please know and/or remember: I am not collecting *all* Davenports, anywhere/anytime, in my database. I am descended from Davis Davenport of King William County, VA, and that is who I have concentrated my efforts on. If you are descended from Davis, or think you are, you will find a wealth of information there, and I will be happy to add your line to the database. However, I am also happy to provide a link to the lineage of any other branch on my web site. Ask me for details. Again, Happy New YEAR, but *not* decade, century, or millennium. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jack W. would look at my Davenports please www.angelfire.com/mo2/janetsgenealogy janet -----Original Message----- From: L K Knapper <kknapper@globalnet.co.uk> To: DAVENPORT-L@rootsweb.com <DAVENPORT-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, January 04, 2000 2:17 PM Subject: [DAVENPORT] Ormus de Dauneporte >Several years ago I visited the hallowed ground of Davenport, the place where the first identifiable Davenport lived, Ormus de Dauneporte the patriarch of Davenports everywhere. To get to it I had to park alongside the busy Holmes Chapel to Congleton road near to a farm called Grange Farm. From here you can walk down a lane signposted Swettenham, past renovated rural cottage now owned by the wealthy. Once you have come to the end of the tidy tarmaced lane and have gone through a rustic gate you are in unspoilt countryside which must contain many remains of the busy township Davenport, which it was many centuries ago. As you go down a steep path beyond the rustic gate, on one side you have the flood plain of the River Dane from which the name Davenport derives( Dauen-port "the town on the trickling stream") and on the other, Davenport Hall Farm perched on a steep sided promontory above the river which today is peaceful and meandering, flowing sluggishly during the Summer months! >, a haven for a multitude of wild life. It was on this promontory that Ormus built his homestead, although we have no clues to say what it was like it must have been quite different from the ornate half timbered houses later Davenports built. Some say that Davenport Hall Farm contains remnants of a much earlier building, a manor house maybe, though I have not been privileged to view its interior. The path continues through water meadows and small thickets to the village of Swettenham a place where some Davenports of the 16th and 17th centuries are buried according to the parish registers. > >It was with a sense of pilgrimage that I spent that warm and sunny early spring day earnestly seeking to receive the vibrations of earlier times as I walked along. > >Source material which deals with the early Davenports is sometime contradictory. The researcher is often left to trust his or her gut feeling about what evidence is likely to have integrity. This is of course true of all historical research. When I was at school we were taught that the Vikings did nothing but rape and pillage this country of ours. Today we have to be more circumspect for extensive excavations in York have demonstrated what a homely and civilised people the Vikings were when they had settle there. A twelfth century chronicle suggests that Davenport was an important place in the year 920 AD and was therefore probably so before this. Its importance seems to have stemmed from the defensive position the promontory and the narrow valley through which the River Dane flows provided in protecting the kingdom of Mercia from raiders across the Cheshire Plain. Sources suggest that the township may have been founded by Scandinavian merchants but was in existence well over ! >a century before the Norman Conquest. In the time of Doomsday Davenport was held by a Gilbert de Venables and was worth three shilling but was mostly wasteland probably meaning that it was wild and wooded and uncultivated. Clearly Davenport was not owned by the Davenports from the time of the Norman Conquest although this was once what I believed. I always believe too that the first Davenports came across with William the Conqueror from Normandy and settled in this country. There is, however, no evidence to suggest that Ormus was alive at a time of the Norman Conquest and certainly none to suggest that he had Norman blood in his veins. What a devastating realisation this was for me! Source material suggests that it is much more likely that Ormus had Scandinavian or English ancestry. All that we can be reasonably be certain of is that Ormus de Dauneporte or Orme de Davenport was living in the twelfth century and probably before 1154. J. John Douglas Davenport, b. abt. 1844 in Newberry Co. SC but probably moved to Edgefield District, SC with his father after 1850. His parents: Moses Davenport (b.c. 1818) and Matilda Galloway (b.c. 1826 in Newberry Co.and d. 1850 in Newberry Co.) Does anyone have information regarding these names? I met Linda Baughn in Edgefield Co. SC Historical Society Library in Oct. and she is requesting this data. Thanks, Adrienne
Several years ago I visited the hallowed ground of Davenport, the place where the first identifiable Davenport lived, Ormus de Dauneporte the patriarch of Davenports everywhere. Dear Cathy, John Davenport, son of Benjamin, married Ann (Nancy) Willis, daughter of Sally Willis, in Goochland County, VA. 9 April, 1793. Bondsman was Philip Rice. Witnesses were Molly Redd, Benjamin Davenport, and Bartlett Willis. William Webber was minister. I do not know where this John and Benjamin came from, but there are probably some records of them in the county records in Goochland. Good Luck. Let us know what you find. Carol

One is always reliant upon deeds and legal documents of one sort or another. Nevertheless, you both might find the following interesting. It is gleaned from bits and pieces in my possession related to my research into my own Davenport line, of which the earliest ancestor so far I have is a Hughe Davenport of Bredbury Hall Nr Stockport in Cheshire alive and producing offspring in the 1630's and 1640's. > > Richard de Davenport Lord of Davenport and Marton(places in Cheshire) > Little is know about this davenport except that he was the son of Thomas de Davenporte and Grandson of Richard de Dauneporte and great grandson of Ormus de Dauneporte > It is likely that he was appointed supreme forester of the Forests of Leek and Macclesfield between 1153 and 1181. > > Vivian de Davenport.Lord of Davenport and Marton. > > He succeeded Richard as Lord of Davenport and Marton but in deeds is never described as being his son though it is entirely probable. His DOB is dependent upon when his parent Richard married. He was probably born before 1190. He was living in 1254. The only surviving original deed was one apparently dated after 1247 in which gifts are given to his younger son Richard comprising all his lands in the town of Macclesfield except the burgage of his eldest son Roger and the rent he held of Edmund de lacy constable of Chester and save a certain fourpenny rent which he gave tothe service of St Mary of Macclesfield. Hello Cousins, My name is Paul Edwin Crunk and I live in Hurst, TX. My father was James Sidney Crunk and his mother was Eunice Jane (Jennie) Davenport Crunk (b. 6 Nov 1877 in TX, d. 24 Aug 1969 in TX). Her father was Sidney Davenport (b. 1852 near Columbus, GA, d. 1880 near Omaha, TX). His father was Presley Davenport (b. 1805 near Richmond, VA, d. 1890 in Hopkins Co., TX). We do not know the name of Presley"s father, but family lore says that he immigrated from Cork, Ireland in the 1700's. Presley's wife was Sarah Abigail Criddle (b. 1814 in Greene Co., GA, and is buried in Titus Co., TX). They were married in 1830. Presley and Sarah had the following seven children: 1. James (b. 1831 in Pike Co., GA, d. 15 Nov 1862 and is buried at Camp Nelson National Cemetery in KY---he never married). 2. Lue (female---b. 1833 in Cherokee Co., GA, d. 1840). 3. Matilda (b. 1839 in Henry Co., GA, d. 1905 buried in Comanche Co., TX) married Tilman Kincy Seago (b. 1837 in Henry Co., GA, d. 1904 buried in Comanche Co., TX), who founded the town of Seagoville, near Dallas, TX. 4. Jesse Dawson (b. 1844 in Henry Co., GA, d. 1870 near New Orleans when his freight boat sank---his body was never found). 5. George Washington (b. 13 Nov 1848 in Henry Co., GA, d. 27 Feb 1927 near Twin Oak, south of Cumby, TX) married Mary Georgia Habbert (b. 27 Oct 1858 near Minden, LA, d. 10 Sep 1946 in Cumby, TX) about 1875. They are buried at Sunny Point Cemetery in Hopkins Co., TX. 6. Unicia Abigail (b. 18 Nov 1849 in Henry Co., GA, d. 16 May 1935 in Mt. Pleasant, TX) married James Houston Witt (b. 21 Nov 1845 in TN, d. 7 Jul 1898 in Omaha, TX) in 1868. They are both buried near Omaha, Morris Co., TX. 7. Sidney (b. 1852 near Columbus, GA, d. 1880 near Omaha, TX) married Molly/Mary Cameron (b. 1850 in TN). Sid and Molly died when my grandmother, Jennie, and her brother, James, were very young. Sidney's brother ,G.W., and his wife, Georgia, raised Jennie and James along with their own ten children. The exact date that Presley and Sarah Davenport left GA for TX and where they first settled in TX is not known, but it was after the Civil War was over. When they left their plantation near Columbus, their freed slaves chose to go to TX with them. I am new to Genealogy, as I have only been researching my Crunk line for five months. I have just started to research my Davenports because I have recently come into possession of a paper written by a member of the family. The information above was compiled by a granddaughter of the George Washington and Sarah Abigail Davenport above, named Mildred Gladys Davis (b. 18 Jun 1905 at Twin Oak community, TX). On 23 Dec 1961, she married Clifford Atkisson and they lived at Greenville, TX. Sadly, they have now passed from this life. I realize that this is only secondary evidence at this time, but I do know that Gladys Adkisson was interested in her family's history all of her life. I met her once when I was in elementary school in the late1950's at the only Davenport reunion that I ever attended and I know that my father visited with her from time to time to learn things about his mother's family and to compare notes. I am confident that my future research will prove her history to be quite accurate. Having searched the archives of this mailing list, it would seem to me that this information might be new to the group. I give this information freely to the group in hopes that someone might help me to find out facts about the parents and siblings of Presley Davenport, born 1805 near Richmond, VA. Your cousin, Paul

Benjamin Davenport and his son John Davenport come from the line of Ormus De Davenport. Benjamin Davenport , born 1743 and died 1787 was married to Ann Temple. John Davenport, his son was born 1770 and died 1830. He married Ann Frances Willis. My question is who was the one who imigrated to America. I was told Ann and John imigrated to America . I checked with Cheshire-L@rootsweb. and know has gotten back yet. Does anyone know who it was that came to America. I Have heard stories about GGGGRANFATHER jOHN COMING FROM jERSEY England. Can someone help in this matter. John and Ann were married in 1793. Hope this helps Cathy
I came across this quote and thought that I would pass it on. I deem it very appropriate of our endeavors. "The man who feels no sentiment of veneration for the memory of his forefathers is himself unworthy of kindred regard or remembrance." DANIEL WEBSTER
