    2. John: Thanks for the leads on the King William Davenports. I will try to follow up on the censuses you referred me to...I have collected right much material on the Davenports, but so far have not made a good connection in King William more than 4 generations bakc, Thanks, Jim Birkitt, Jbirk45386@aol.com

    2. Elaine: I am researching Davenport (for my daughter-in-law) in King William County just next to King and Queen. She is Brenda Davenport Birkitt; her father was Rawlings Grant Davenport (d. 1943 and buried at historic Sharon Baptist Church, Central Garage, Va.); his father was Ernest Linwood Davenport; his father was Edgar Morris Davenport(b. 1855)--all from King William, Va. I have a 60 page genealogy on Martin Davenport of Hanover County (next to Caroline). He was one of the six sons of the King William Patriarch, Davis Davenport. Have not connected yet. One other observation....I was minister in Caroline County at Carmel Baptist Church for nearly 20 years. I knew a James Kidd. I do not know whether he is still living, but his sister is Mabel Kidd Houston, Ruther Glen, Va. 22546. If you recognize any of the names above in your reseach, please contact me at Jbirk45386@aol.com directly. Thanks, Respectfully, Jim Birkitt

    3. Chris, Excellant news! Please keep us all posted on the results of your contact. It really is a small world. <g> I'm not 100% certain of the spelling of the name Headley/Hedley, so please correct me where it's wrong, ok? I do think it changed at some point though. Doug

    1. [DAVENPORT] King & Queen Co
    2. Just got back to COLD CT after spending a week in VA doing research. I am going to throw out my Davenport connection in this manner and maybe I will make a connection to someone this way. After checking all the surrounding records around Caroline Co, VA which is where my James Kidd was from, I have come to the conclusion that Elizabeth Carlton must have married John Davenport in King & Queen Co circa 1792. (Elizabeth was born in King & Queen Co.) SO does anyone connection to any Davenports that were in King & Queen Co in the latter part of the 1700's? Elizabeth and John Davenport had three children before she married my gggGrandfather James Kidd of Caroline Co. BUT, James must have been in another area of VA that I can't officially find him on record until his father died in 1802. By then, James and Elizabeth Carlton Davenport Kidd had had 3 more children. James died c. 1804. Elizabeth then married Peter Perry in 1808 in Halifax Co, VA (which is where the rest of her family had moved). They moved to KY (Christian Co) by 1813. So, please, if anyone can help me out with any Davenport family that lived in King & Queen Co in the late 1700's, I would greatly appreciate it. I reviewed all the info on Richard Davenport that was in Caroline Co but can't find a connection. BUT, the uncle of my James (Benjanmin Kidd) lived right next to Richard Davenport, so maybe it was a sibling or cousin of Richard that introduced James TO Elizabeth after she was a widow. HELP Please......any leads would be appreciated. Because of the "burned" record situation in King & Queen Co, I must rely on your help. Have a good day. Elaine Kidd O'Leary in freezing CT.

    3. Debbie, I was in the same position as you. My father was told as a child we were descended from Humphrey Davenport. I couldn't find the connection anywhere. I finally stumbled onto a census record that proved to be the missing piece. Lucretia sounds very familiar. I'm sure I've come across it during my search. I'm running out of time this morning so I'll need to look for it later tonight. Chris :) DDavenp393@aol.com wrote: > Hi, Chris! 3. Doug, Thank you! This is wonderful information. I'm meeting with the Headleys today for lunch. About a year ago I discovered my project leader lived on Weldon Road in Milton. I asked him if he knew any of the Headleys. He said of course he does, he married one!! Turns out he's married to my aunt's neice. My aunt is my aunt only through marriage. We don't have a direct line we've descended from--yet! Thanks! 2. Jack W. Ralph
    3. Dear Cousins, This message is to inform the "newbies", and remind the "old timers", of the DAVENPORT GenConnect Boards. This "web based forum" allows anyone to view and post Queries, Biographies, Obituaries, Bible Records, Deeds, Pensions and Wills. This forum is not intended to replace DAVENPORT-L, merely supplement it. One of the advantages of this forum is that many people who do not subscribe to DAVENPORT-L can find it (the Davenport GenConnect Boards, not DAVENPORT-L) through one of the many available search engines, which is not true for the email messages we send each other, and they can be given instructions on how to subscribe to DAVENPORT-L by any of us who read their messages. Another thing, each of you can "subscribe" to each of the available "boards" and be notified, via email, whenever someone posts a message. This means that you don't have to "visit" the web page to find out if it contains any new messages. I think it's something that each of you ought to look into (the option is at the bottom of every page). The Davenport Query Board currently has 113 messages posted, many of which have never been posted on DAVENPORT-L. Check them out. You can find more information (and access the boards) at: http://users.intercomm.com/nvjack/davnport/genconnect.htm If you have questions you would like to ask me, please do. 3. My thanks also to Nevada Jack and the many IT people who saved us from impending doom. I would also like to nominate my wife Susan as my Y2K Hero as well. As the Purchasing Systems Administrator for a large pharmaceutical company, she is in charge of their vendor file. She was delegated by her manager to be on their company's Y2K Contingency Team. She attended endless meetings since February and had to work several Saturdays and weeknights in the Fall. She worked closely with several IT people and sent out countless mailings to vendors. Susan and I traditionally have the week off between Christmas and New Years Day. But while I was visiting Court Houses, libraries, and cemeteries across North Central Texas, she was at work. And yes, she did work New Years Day. My hat is off to Susan, Nevada Jack, and everyone else for all of their time and effort given. Paul

    3. Debbie, I suspect that you are right, you're probably only one or two generations removed from linking to my known Davenport ancestors. >Hi, Chris! I noticed your posting on the Davenport-L list, in which you >mentioned you were descended from the Humphrey from Barbados. I believe my >line is also connected but missing a couple of generations! His children were also born in NY. I base that on the fact that they were in NY and so many of the names are the same. It's just that the times don't match up too well with data I've collected so far, and I'd suspect that Ontario Co. is much farther north than the Kingston on Hudson, NY location of much of Humphrey Sr.'s life. Keep at it and I'm sure we'll discover a link there somewhere. Here's a descendancy chart for Humphrey Sr. that shows about 6 generations. Hope it pastes in here ok. It is not complete, but is mainly based on family records and some histories of the Morris Co. area. I've yet to find a family date or event that wasn't corroborated in the public records, which is most unusual. 3. You hit the jackpot, Chris. :) Not only do I know where the link is, I used to attend the Davenport reunions that were held in Milton. :) Adams DAVENPORT, 1830-1908, was the son of Enos Davenport, the son of Cornelius Davenport, the son of Humphrey "Jr." who is one of the Barbados line of Humphrey Davenports. Adams went to the gold rush in 1850, sailing by way of the Isthmus of Panama and hiring two natives to portage him across. He'd contracted malaria and one carried him and the other carried his travelling trunk. (I've got the trunk in my living room.) He made it to California, worked as a carpenter in San Francisco and returned to NJ by wagon train. (If only that trunk could talk!) When he returned he invested his savings in what had been known as the Quaker Mill at Millbrook, NJ, just south of present day Rt. 10 and a bit east of the County College of Morris. He married Eliza Stansbury LUM on Dec. 20, 1854 in Milton, NJ. They had five children who survived to adulthood (two died at an early age), four sisters and one brother. The oldest was Irene Davenport, known to many as "Reen," and she married William Charles Spargo. I'm not 100% sure of the birth order after that, but I'm fairly confident they ran as follows. The next one was Aunt Esther, who married Edward HEDLEY. I don't have a marriage date for them, nor dates for Edward. More on them in a minute. Next was Aunt Ella who married Will Straun. They lived in Napa, Ca. for many years and were buried at Mill Brook Cemetery, (behind the Methodist Church) with only a pair of yucca plants to mark their graves. Someone later put stones on their graves if I remember rightly and it caused a bit of a furor in the family because they'd expressly said they didn't want them. One of their neices or nephews thought differently once they weren't around to argue about it. :) Will has an interesting history I want to track down sometime, related to the Civil War. There was a big break with his family that's very mysterious, but I think modern search methods would make it feasible to solve the puzzle. Then Aunt Bertha, or "Bird", married a Jenkins. I've got notes on that branch of the family around here somewhere, but not entered in the ol 'puter yet. Youngest of the five was young Tom Davenport. Tom got the cart before the horse and ran out on his fiance. Ended up as an engineer with the Southern Pacific Railroad and lived in Tucson, Az where he married Minnie Tevis, daughter of Capt. Tevis, a buddy of Kit Carson's. Lots of tales of early frontier days in Arizona come through that branch of the family. The 1950's movie, "The Tenderfoot" is based on her book of her father's reminisences, "Arizona in the '50's", referring to the *18*50's. :) So, now that you've got the scope of that little family group... The Hedley's farm in Milton was always the site of the Davenport family reunions when I was a little boy. As many as could come, that were descended from this family of Adams and Eliza Davenport, would gather there on Labor Day each year. This reunion USED to be held at the mill in Millbrook, but when a new owner took it over in the 1940's or so, it was moved to Milton. Esther and Edward HEDLEY had six kids. I have some info on two of them, but the other four I don't know. Oldest was Adam Davenport HEDLEY. The family story was that they hoped that by naming him after his grandfather, Adams would will that branch of the family the gold fortune he was reputed to have brought home with him. :) He married a gal named Nellie, and they had seven children: 1-Edward HEDLEY (-) sp: Esther DAVENPORT (-) 2-Adam D. HEDLEY (-) sp: Nellie (-) 3-Helen HEDLEY (1908-) 3-Robert HEDLEY (1909-1992) 3-Albert "Dean" HEDLEY (1911-1993) 3-Donald HEDLEY (1913-) 3-Elenor HEDLEY (1916-) 3-John HEDLEY (1918-) 3-Elwood HEDLEY (1923-) These were all my mother's cousins and she grew up with them. Over the years though, they've lost touch with one another, moved away or died off. If you could get some of the "missing links" back in touch, I'd be most grateful! The other child in that family I know a little about is Joe Hedley. He inherited the lumber yard from his father Edward and made a good business of it. He built the mansion for P.T. Barnum there in Oak Ridge and ended up working for him in other ways as well, Mom said. Apparantly he and Squire worked together because when I asked my aunt about them once she described them as a pair, very cold to get along with, "stick of wood and a cake of ice." :) 2-Joe HEDLEY (-) sp: Evangeline "Vangie" (-) 3-Eddie HEDLEY (-) Last I'd heard, "Eddie" had inherited the farm where we used to gather for the reunions, his father remarried a woman named Ida and I gather there was some tension there. sp: Ida (-) 2-Squire HEDLEY (-) 2-Mary HEDLEY (-) 2-Esther "Essie" HEDLEY (-) -Twins 2-Edna HEDLEY (-) - Twins That's about all I can offer you off the top of my head and from "Family Origins" notes I've recorded over the years. Hope that's some help and that it rings a few bells for the family contact that you've found out. Please let them know that they have cousins that would love to get in touch with them, and that we still have the Davenport reunion each year. 2. Hi, Chris! I noticed your posting on the Davenport-L list, in which you mentioned you were descended from the Humphrey from Barbados. I believe my line is also connected but missing a couple of generations! Do you or do you know of anyone who has a comprehensive descendancy chart of all of Humphrey's children? Any info would be appreciated. My Humphrey moved from Ontario Co, NY in the 1830s to Washtenaw Co. MI. He was born in 1767 and died in 1848. Wife's name Lucretia. His children's names were John, Cornelius, Rachel and Abram. His children were also born in NY. Thanks, DEBBIE
