    3. I know that of Martin Winn DAVENPORT's children Joseph Martin and George Henry had descendants that moved to Oregon. Joseph Martin DAVENPORT, b. 30 Dec. 1858 Cherokee County, NC, d. 6 Aug. 1935 and George Henry DAVENPORT, b. 2 Jan. 1851 Cherokee County, NC, d. 28 Dec. 1935 Madison County, AR The information that I have on Joseph Martin DAVENPORT is pretty sketchy and I don't know if he actually ever moved there or if it was just some of his descendants. Information that I received from another researcher from this line indicates that Joseph Martin DAVENPORT married Dora COOK, b. 28 Oct. 1866, on 7 April 1889 in Madison County, Arkansas. They had the following children: 1. Claude Cleveland DAVENPORT, b. 5 Dec. 1892, d. 28 May 1941 2. Erma Peralee DAVENPORT, m. Ralph RUSSELL 3. Minnie Lee DAVENPORT, m. Loy MCFERRIN 4. Ava Ethel DAVENPORT, m. Clarence LOVE 5. Mona Virginia DAVENPORT, m. Clarence MOORE (Note: due to possible privacy issues, I did not include dates of birth for those that I do not have dates of death.) My great-grandparents, George Henry DAVENPORT m. Nancy Louisa LEDFORD, b. 18 Jun 1857 Cherokee County, NC, d. 6 Nov. 1947 Madison County, AR, on 27 Aug. 1874 in NC (probably Clay County). They had the following children (those with descendants that moved to Oregon are noted): 1. Henry Sylvester DAVENPORT, b. 19 June 1875 Clay Co., NC, d. 19 Mar. 1963, buried Madison Co., AR, married Charlotte ASHBROOK 2. William Marcus DAVENPORT, b. 5 Dec. 1877 Clay Co., NC, d. & buried in Haskell, OK, married Sarah LOLLAR 3. Elbert A. DAVENPORT, b. 26 Mar 1880, Clay Co., NC, d. 3 Oct. 1903 in Pryor, OK, buried in Madison Co., AR. Did not marry. 4. Virgil Rosco DAVENPORT, b. 2 Sept. 1882 Clay Co., NC, d. 6 Feb. 1986 Madison Co., AR, buried in Madison Co., AR, married Mary Matilda (Mollie) WHEELER. Rosco had four sons that moved to Oregon all of which are still living. They are: Harvey Martin, Ewell Hayden, Roy Otis, and Albert. 5. Adaline Mary DAVENPORT, b. 9 May 1885 Madison Co., AR, d. 7 Aug. 1979 Madison Co., AR, buried in Madison Co., AR, married James Thomas CALER. Mary had three children that moved to Oregon: Connie CALER (deceased), Dessie CALER and Bessie CALER (I think both are still living). 6. Nora Bell DAVENPORT, b. 19 Mar. 1888 Madison Co., AR, d. 22 Dec. 1963, buried in Madison County, AR, married John Smith HANKINS. 7. Clercie Ann DAVENPORT, b. 18 Nov. 1890 Madison Co., AR, d. 27 Mar. 1974 Madison Co., AR, buried in Madison Co., AR, married Walter Lee SMITH. 8. Callie Vandora DAVENPORT, b. 15 Jun 1893 Madison Co., AR, d. 22 May 1964 Madison Co., AR, buried in Madison Co., AR, married Clemet Lester VANLANDINGHAM. Callie had one son that moved to Oregon: John Clifford VANLANDINGHAM, b. 16 July 1923, d. 16 May 1983 Myrtle Point, Oregon. 9. John Luther DAVENPORT, b. 6 Sept. 1896 Madison Co., AR, d. 17 Dec. 1990 Washington Co., AR, buried Madison Co., AR, married Myrtle DUNAWAY. I think some of the descendants of those that moved to Oregon are on this list. Perhaps they could give additional information. -Sherryl ---------- > Angela wrote: > > If I am not mistaken, some of Martin Winn Davenport's (born in NC circa 1820) > descendants ended up in Oregon. > > Martin Winn, s/o David, s/o Martin, s/o Thomas, s/o Martin, s/o Davis. > > I believe that there is at least one "cousin" of this line who subscribes to > this list, if anyone has further input. > > Angela Pierce Groenhout >

    2. Tom,I read with interest your iformation about your Davenport ancestors. My gggrandfather was Willis Augustus Davenport(1808-1881). He had a son named Willis B. Davenport who moved from Greenville, S.C. in the mid-1800's to Arkansas. Is it possible we are talking abaout the same person as your Willis. It is possible that he could have lived in OK. at one time. Check the dates to see. Willis B. would have been born about 1830's-40's. I look forward to hearing from you........Roy Willis Davenport

    2. Cliff: I think that you find that there were Pamunkey Davenports in Oregon by 1848. Jesse Davenport, Jr., of Boone County, Indiana, son of Jesse, Sr., and his wife Elizabeth Fentress (Quaker family), and Jesse, Jr.'s sister married to a Jones, were in one of the first wagon trains to take the Oregon Trail. Their party was headed by Jacob Jones, Sr., who was settled on the Michigan Road in Eagle Township, Boone County, before uprooting and going West. Jesse, Jr., never married, but he was quite an Indian fighter, was pensioned by the United States Government for his service in fighting Indians in Oregon in the 1850s as a militiaman. In later years, several of the Boone County Davenports, including two who were tuberculars seeking salt air, went to Oregon. Coos Bay region, Roseburg, if I recall correctly. Edward Davenport, barber, brother of Jesse, Jr., and Milton S. Davenport, tanner, son of Henry and cousin of Edward, both of Boone County, Indiana, went to Iowa in the Winter of 1852--and nearly died in a blizzard. Uncle Milton came back, never had a good word for Iowa thereafter, and never considered moving again--dying at age 96 in Zionsville, Boone County in 1926. (Uncle Milton is renown in Indiana annals for having had three wives, and having been married to the first for 60 years.) Edward came back from Iowa too, stayed in Indiana until after the Civil War. Then he moved to Iowa for good. Later, either he and some of his children, or just some of his children, moved on to Oregon in the 1880s or 90s. I really haven't checked Edward's line out, except for son James, who died in the Civil War--this is family legend. John Scott

    2. To Anna Cotter: I found Myrtle Nipper's death record, part of which you already knew. The database is North Carolina Death Records, 1993-1996 Name: DAVENPORT, MYRTLE NIPPER. Date of Birth: June 02, 1898 Death Date: April 21, 1993 Age: 94 Years Place of Occurance: , Buncombe, North Carolina, Burial in state Place of Residence: . Buncombe, North Carolina, Marital Status: Widowed State of Birth: Tennessee, Social Security Number: 229-26-6768 Fathers Surname: NIPPER I also found Mont McNeely's death record in Kentucky: He died Oct. 5, 1952 in Graves Co. at the age of 82 yrs. Vol. #52, Cert.# 20870 Also, there were several marriages in Tn. from 1890-1898, the possible period of time for Teak & Myrtle's parents. NIPPER, ALEXANDER married RAYDER, LILLIE 10/04/1898 in Roan County, TN NIPPER, CHARLEY married NARRAMORE, SALLIE 07/10/1891 in Sequatchie County, TN I would probably try to get Myrtle's death certificate and application for Social Security Number. There should be some helpful information on both documents, including her parents names. Once you get the names, you can search further. I hope this helps. MargoBelle

    1. Re: [DAVENPORT] Elizabeth Davenport
    2. To Cyndi: My great-grandparents, Edwin Davenport and Louise Bolet, were also from New Orleans. They lived there about the same time as yours but I can't find any connection. However, there was a John J. Davenport living in St. Mary's Parish in 1870, he's on page 587 of the census, living in the 4th Ward. Two John Davenports were Confederate soldiers in La. during the Civil War: Davenport, John (also spelled Deavenport and Devenport, John), enlisted as Pvt., discharged as Sgt., Co. A., 14th La. Infantry, and Davenport, John,Pvt., Co. A., Miles Legion, La. Militia. Enlisted Nov. 14th, 1861, New Orleans, La. Also, a John Davenport registered several pieces of land in New Orleans from 1895-1896. I did find a few things on a Dudley Sanders. He is in the 1870 La. census, Winnpar Parish, LA, Pg. 510, Twp. 6W, St.Maurice. He also served in the Confederate Army, Co. K, Unit 28 (Gray's) Louisiana Infantry. He enlisted as a private, but was a Corporal when he was discharged. The source is Confederate Research Sources, Volume 3, Book S, page 441 Enlisted in Tullulah Oct. 21, 1862, Roll dated Aug. 31, 1863. Absent, sick and without leave. Roll of Prisoners of War, C.S.A., Paroled at Natchitoches, La., June 7, 1865. Resided in Winn Parish, La. after the War. Also, a Willie Mae "Sis" Sanders died in New Orleans in 1995, her surviving husband 's name is Dudley Sanders, could he possibly be a descendant? The name is rather unusual. The obituary also listed a Frank Dudley Sanders and a James Dudley Sanders. There is also an Emma K. Gardner in the La. 1850 census, in Lafayettepar Parish, on page 265 in the Western District. This is all I could find. Good luck in your search. MargoBelle

From that point on they were either black or white. It may not have been a rigid stratification, but many were taken to court if they tried to claim they were Indian. Some census takers would denote Indian on the census records, and many of the Indians called themselves "Mulatto". My ancestors were called "Mulatto" in the 1783 and 1785 census. Some historians say that they were mixed white and black, however earlier records called them "Indian". Many of the children of mixed Indian and white unions prior to the 1700's were considered by the law to be white. This would be an exception to the rule that children took the identity of their mother. I found this in my lineage where some of the family were accepted into the white community and others were called considered black. They lived in the same community and were divided by race, but were cousins etc. This is Virginias' open secret. But the definitions--"One-Drop Rule"--did not turn rigid until the 20th century (VA Racial Integrity Law of 1924). The 18th and 19th century standards were less demanding and in practical terms came down to appearance and community knowledge of family history. Your suspicion that there was a lot more "passing" from the non-white to white castes is well founded. I have always found Carl Degler's book, Neither Black nor White, written in the 1970s, to be a fascinating exploration of comparsions between U.S. and Brazilian racial relations.
