    1. [DAVENPORT] Re: Floyd Devenport
    2. Lib: You might try locating some land records for your Floyd in Laurens and Greenville Co. S.C. to see if any other Devenport/Davenports own land close to him, quite possibly his father or brothers, etc. lived nearby. Also, have you tried the genealogical societies in those two counties? They might have marriage, death, census or burial records on file that would reveal Floyd's father's name. Good luck. MargoBelle

I understand that Rice Davenport was a Colonel of some kind (Regular Army, U.S. Volunteers, Missouri Militia?) relative to the Mexican War, Indian Campaigns, or Civil War--I have not checked him out. 1. [DAVENPORT] John D. Davenport/Maine request
    2. Barb Campbell
    3. Hello all. Would dearly love information on father of John D. Davenport. This is on my mothers line. She is Beverly Davenport.( Michigan.) Her father was Byron Davenport. His father was Charles Davenport. Charles father was John D. Davenport, married to Molly. John D. was an engraver and lithographer in Cincinnati, Ohio. He served in the Civil War in Ohio Infantry Regiment Co. 14. John D. Davenports father (unknown first name) was from Maine. He was married to Elizabeth La Fontaine. Any ideas? Thank you for any assistance. Barb Coldiron Campbell 3035 Rae St. Regina, Saskatchewan Canada S4S 1R8 Email: bcampbell@cableregina.com

    2. Barb: Thank you for advising of the Census enumerations of Devenport of Presque Isle, Maine. Was that the way the family spelled the name or the way that the Census enumerator spelled the name? I have little faith in Census enumerators as spellers, prefer to rely on how the Davenport or Devenport concerned spelled the name. You should see what one moderately literate enumerator did to the German names in Vandenburgh County, Indiana, in one Census. JSD

    1. Re: [DAVENPORT] John D. Davenport/Maine request
    2. Barb: There is a published genealogy concerning the Davenports of Cincinnati who came from Maine, published around 1900, if I remember correctly. When I was living in Cincinnati, I stumbled across and bought a copy, found it in no way related to my Virginia Davenport ancestry, so I contributed the book to the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City. If you will access the Family History Library index on a CD at any Family History Center (I suspect that there's one in Regina or nearby), sort by Davenport, Ohio, and Maine, you'll come up with the book. I suspect you will find it available either by microfilm or microfiche. I know that the book is there, for I've come across several times in my other Davenport searches. 2. I've tried this before, but since there are some new members, i figured i would try again. I'm looking for a Floyd Devenport's father. I know that in 1840, the Greenville county, sc census has Floyd listed. and also in 1850 the laurens county, sc census has Floyd Devenport listed as being 50 years old. after this i cannot find a thing on Floyd Devenport. If anyone knows anything about Floyd, i could sure use the help. Thanks. Lib

    3. You will find that the same name is spelled many different ways. Some of our ancestors could not read or write and had to depend on others to spell their name and they would put an X there for their signature. For example. Sweeney Sweeny Sweny Swiney Swiny They are all the same family, but different spelling. 3. As we all know in genealogy, illiteracy (or limited writing skills) caused many mispellings in the 1800s and earlier. I would investigate any near spellings in the right areas for my suspected ancestors, Lynn

    1. Re: [DAVENPORT] Variations in spelling Davenport.
    2. John, I wanted to share with people that in looking for my Davenport line, I found (and I can't remember where as it was when I first started) that some Devenports who came from Devenport, England, changed the spelling to Davenport because that is what most people thought they were saying anyway. Others changed it because they were iliterate and did not know how it was spelled to begin with. Now I would like to know if there are any Davenports from Kentucky or Missouri that are related to James Madison Davenport who married Sarah J. Turner. I can't get past him on my Davenport line. Thanks, Martie Durbin Harris

    2. My in-laws are from ALA, came to OK through AR and of my father-in-law's generation, two of them spell it DAvenport, and the rest spell it DEvenport. The two who changed it to DA were "helped" by the CCC people when they signed up for service. They were illiterate. The generation before them, I suspect will be a mixed spelling also. Thanks for the infor. I'd sure like to know who the gentleman was who was from OK and at Salt Lake City. Thanks again, Jann Davenport Oklahoma City

    1. Re: [DAVENPORT] Variations in spelling Davenport.
    2. To those Interested: Variations from the spelling of the surname as Davenport, such as Devenport, Deavenport, etc, are generally unique to Southern lines and reflect several generations of illiteracy in the family, and when literacy returned to accepting a spelling that some lawyer, postal clerk, court office clerk, or notary public put on a document. I have found no spelling variations among the Davenports of Northern lines. I recall visiting with a Devenport from Oklahoma at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City ten or so year ago. He told me that he had no knowledge of the family name ever being anything but Devenport, that his people had settled Oklahoma at the time of the Land Rush from Alabama. 1. [DAVENPORT] Davenports to Oregon
    2. Glenora Chamberlin
    3. Hi Everyone, It's nice to see the Oregon line being discussed, but I'm still lost, so hope if I post some things I might be found. Did any of the others start in New York? The earliest I have is William R, ?-1905, m. Phebe Ann Wood, b. 5-12-1827. d. 6-4-1885. They had William Orville while in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co., NY. in 1862. William O m. Emma Jane Russell of Ft. Covington, Franklin, NY Both the Davenports and the Russells went to Iowa, the above Phebe is buried in Buchanan Co, Iowa. They went next to Cherokee, Cherokee, Iowa where they farmed, and W O worked for the railroad as a fireman. The children of W O and Emma, all born in Cherokee: Olive Mae 12-25-1891/2-22-1984 William Russell 10-26-189?/8-10-1978 Grace Feb 1896/Mar 1896 Blanche Irene 2-2-1897/2-11-1992 Glenn LeRoy 4-25-1899/12-9-1983 Mildred 10-10-19??/1-16-1951 Orville Joseph 1905/10-21-1962 All came to Oregon beginning about 1919, and all died here. There are other Davenports in the Cherokee Cemetery, but I don't have the list at hand right now. I believe they may also be part of the Joel Davenport line. Can anyone help? I have more information, but none before NY or the rest of the family from there. Thanks, Glenora Davenport Chamberlin

    1. [DAVENPORT] PARADIGM SHIFT, or Things My Mother Never Told Me about doing Worldwide Online Genealogy & Family History Research.
    2. Jack W. Ralph
    3. Cousins, I am sharing the article below with permission of the author. You would be wise to save it for future reference. Nevada Jack - ------------------------------------------------------------- Historically, the model for research facilities use in genealogy and family history [in the United States] centered first on the East Coast, with the subsequent gradual takeover in the field of Family History, beginning circa A. D. 1900, by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, (headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah). http://www.mormons.org/daily/family_history/Family_History_EOM.htm Presently, on the East Coast, the Library of Congress Online Catalog has a database of "approximately 12 million records representing books, serials, computer files, manuscripts, cartographic materials, music, sound recordings, and visual materials in the Library's collections." http://catalog.loc.gov/ This is further enhanced by major research depositories from New England - to the South, as well as some other locations in the Central section of the United States. Library Catalogues on the World Wide Web: http://www.lights.com/webcats/ provides the current online Geographical Index by State: http://www.lights.com/webcats/states/USA.html This can be compared with the LDS FHC of Salt Lake City, Utah, having 2,000,000 + microfilms and approximately 280,000 bound volumes. REF: The World of Learning 1999, Forty-Ninth Edition, by Europa Publications Limited. http://www.familysearch.org/Browse/browse.asp On the West Coast, in the State of California, there is the Melvyl® Catalog Database. Its contents, as of December 6, 1999 are listed as: "approximately 10,013,139 Titles representing 15,226,500 holdings for materials in the University of California Library and the California State Library". http://www.melvyl.ucop.edu/ This represents a major PARADIGM SHIFT in the field of Genealogy and Family History Research, as this database alone represents more resources than those contained in the Online Library of Congress Catalog. Limited in-house access to Other Databases includes RLIN Bibliographic File (@RLG) http://www.rlg.org/rlin.html of approximately 88 million records, as well as WorldCat (@OCLC) and its 32 + million records. http://www.oclc.org/oclc/man/6928fsdb/worldcat.htm SOURCES and REFERENCES, at: http://www.dcn.davis.ca.us/~vctinney/archives.htm#Sources combines these major holdings with other online databases of genealogical interest - worldwide.
