    1. Re: [DAVENPORT] Davenport-Boyd Data
    2. Jane: Thanks for the birth and death dates on Rhoda Davenport Boyd, daughter of James Davenport, Sr., of Halifax. Sarah Boyd, Rhoda's daughter, who married Joel Davenport c1795, and was widowed in 1807, married second, after several maters of concern for the Randolph County Grand Jury, Burrell Barnes, a Revolutionary War veteran. After both William Boyd, Sr., and Burrell Barnes died, Sarah moved, in the late 1830s as I recall, with a married daughter to Indiana. My search came up with her as "Sarah Barnes," age 70, in a daughter's household in the Census of 1850, in Warrick County, Indiana. She's in the 1850 Census Index for Indiana. I did not pursue the Census ID, which was done for me in the late 1960s by Ruth Slevin, a Quaker lady of advance age and failing eyesight in Indianapolis, who did many of my early Census searches. Mrs. Slevin was a jewel, but subsequently much of her work had to be redone. Eyesight and Quaker principles--she refused to read Slave Schedules, but did not tell me that she was by-passing them, and I was then a novice. She also gave me moral judgments on what she found in the Censuses. I remember that when she located Sarah Boyd Davenport Barnes, she gave me a "Tisk, tisk" on the side of her Census extract, saying "Your grandmother was only 14-years-old when your Uncle Jesse was born! Shameful!" As near as I could tell, Sarah had five sons by Joel, three daughters by Burrel Barnes, and two daughters that got the attention of the Randolph County Grand Jury. It's a sticky wicket, fraught with perils and situations of the awkward sort, and refutations of at least one published family history. You're welcome to sort it out if you're comfortable with that sort of thing. When I got to the point of either dropping the pursuit or having to contradict a spurious, puffed-up published family history that I had concluded to have involved two successive generations of Grand Jury concerns, terminating in a family that included one of the foremost Disciples of Christ ministers in Indiana, his four sons who were also ministers, and a daughter married to a missionary in China, I let prudence be the better part of valor, said "To hell with it," and went off in other directions. You are welcome to reopen the subject if you're so inclined. John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ

    1. Re: [DAVENPORT] Davenport "Proofs" of a Terry Relationship - 2
    2. Willard Anderson, Thanks for inquiring! I descend through William Boyd Jr. [sister of your Sarah] who married Martha Hopwood. They had four sons and one daughter in Randolph County, North Carolina and they all moved to Orange County, Indiana. William Boyd Jr.'s death was about 1827 in Randolph County. Yes, he died before his father. William Jr.'s children and wife arrived one by one in Indiana over a period of years--1839-1860. There are lots of descendants from this Boyd family. I descend through the daughter, Dicy (Boyd) White. She married Absalom White in 1840 in Randolph County, NC. Rhoda (Davenport) Boyd died in Orange County too. Her death date was 30 Nov 1846. She is buried in Old Methodist [Kearby] Cemetery, Stampers Creek Township. I saw her grave in the late 1960s. One has to walk back to it as no road goes by it. The grave stones may be gone by now. Big trees were growing up in it. She was born 20 Nov 1753 so lived to be age 93. Her daughter Jane/Jean (Boyd) Robbins [sister of your Sarah] is buried in the same cemetery. Her husband was Daniel Robbins. They left North Carolina about 1815 so were the first Boyd family to arrive in Orange County. I have done a certain amount of research on William Boyd's family. His father was John Boyd. There is a will for him in Halifax County, Virginia in 1800. He had a wife named Jane Boyd and several children including our William. I cannot get back before John Boyd. There were other Boyds who lived there, who were more conspicuous, and they even knew James Davenport. Unfortunately, although I have tried to find a connection to them, I cannot find one and they are pretty well documented. Do you know where your Sarah (Boyd) Davenport Barnes died? Somewhere in Indiana? Jane Kyhl Beekman, Muncie, IN

    1. [DAVENPORT] VESTRY OF SOUTHAM PARISH
    2. Thanks Doc: I will try to locate the book "The Vestry of Southam Parish, Cumberland County, Virginia 1745-1792." I had the film out on it about two years ago, but of course missed a few things I see. One had to read it page by page etc. At the time I read it, it crossed my mind that maybe it was James Terry who had a daughter Grace Terry who married Thomas Davenport Sr. James Terry definitely dominated the Vestry and Thomas Davenport named his eldest son "James." Well, just a thought. Gideon Glen, Drucilla' Davenport's husband, and Edward McGehee were also processioners. Jane Kyhl Beekman, Muncie, IN

    1. [DAVENPORT] Orme de Davenport
    2. Wini & all- Thank you for pointing that info out. You're right, with those dates, I highly doubt if they are correct. I've seen Orme's date of birth differ in research. Our site says he was born ca 1066. I've also seen frequently that he was born 1034. At this point, I'm not sure. Orme's birth at 1034 and his son Richard's birth at 1136 leaves alot of room and now makes Orme 102 years old when he fathered Richard. Physically impossible, no? Now that makes me think that perhaps there are one and quite possibly two generations missing. However, if Orme were born 1066, then I can't believe he was with William The Conquerer in that same year (amazing baby). Can anybody enlighten me on this situation? Sure could use some help with this. Would anyone like to write a historical and educational piece on William The Conquerer? I'd like to have more on that era available on our website. I'd prefer that it be historically accurate. If you'd like to write this piece for the site, email me at: [email protected] Thank you for the history lesson, it was much needed.....cuzzin Teri http://DavenportFamily.1colony.com

    3. Information on this can be found in the New England Historic Genealogical Society Register, Volume 9, April 1855, Pages 146-148 under the title, "Pedigree of Davenport, Compiled from Davenport's History and Genealogy of the Davenport Family" It begins with Ormus De Dauneporte, born 1086, to Richard de Dauneporte, born 1136 to Thomas de Davenporte, living in the time of Henry II and so forth. This can be accessed at www.newenglandancestors.org if you are a member of the society. [email protected] wrote:Wini & all- Thank you for pointing that info out. I've gotten no response on my numerous emails to support at the host company.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Upon going to the temporary website DavenportFamily.1colony I find myself with a questions for you. 1.) Note below, the statement that Orme de Davenport, also known as Orme de Aunceport, went from Normandy to England with William The Conquerer in 1086. It is said, not proven yet, that Orme & William were cousins. Shortly after their arrival in England, on 25 Dec 1086, William The Conquerer was crowned King of England . Don't know if this is a type but I know that William the Conqueror (born 1027) landed in England Sept.28, 1066 (not 1086). October 14th the Normans defeated the English at the Battle of Hastings, and William was crowned King of England that Christmas in Westminster Abbey. This leads to another question, i.e. if Orme landed with William the Conqueror in 1066 when his age would reasonably have been no younger than 18 or 20, - would he have fathered his first child Richard in 1136, which would make Orme at least 88 at the time of the birth. This is a little confusing and maybe I'm missing something here - OR, there could be a typo. Shortly after their arrival in England, on 25 Dec 1086, William The Conquerer was crowned King of England and was known as King William I. 3. Mary, You should be able to use your CD burner program in the following manner: Select: MAKE A DATA DISK You should come to a sceen that says: SELECT FILES AND FOLDERS TO ADD Select: DRIVE C Open the folder: FTW Find in that folder the file with the name of your Family Tree: For example: Davenport. There are three files you want to copy: 1. FTW Family File. It is the color blue and is labeled the name of your family tree. For Example Davenport. (this is the file you work with created by the program with the information you enter) 2. FTW Backup File. It is the color red and is labeled the name of your family tree. For Example Davenport (this is the file that is updated when you close your program and it says backing up) 3. FTW Compact Backup File. It is the color red and is labeled the name of your family tree. For Example Davenport (this file is created when you select BACKUP FAMILY FILE in the Family Tree Program) These 3 files are simply copies of one another in one form or another. SELECT EACH OF THESE FILES AND THEN TELL THE CD BURNER TO BURN THEM TO THE CD. NOTE: If you have more than one family tree on your Family Tree Program the each tree should have 3 files named for it in the FTM folder. COPY them to CD and your files should be protected against a catastrophe. And..I have a couple of really small Yahoo accounts that will hold the most critical items. Again, one of the reasons that I like AOL is because I have alot megabytes involved and they never give me any guff...HOWEVER, I do have to make sure that I forward things to myself again every three weeks or so. I can access my AOL account pretty much anywhere since you don't need the software to do it. Janet Hunter

    3. Thanks for the input...I'll try some of these methods in the future. I too use PAF as my base file, but sometime don't have the time to copy the entries to that one and the FTM file, as my time on the computer is limited now...my husband retired 2 years ago.! :-) Mary Crutchfield ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, January 13, 2003 1:48 PM Subject: Re: [DAVENPORT] floppy backups > Well, for what it is worth I use PAF for my basic structure for my gedcom. > And every fourth or fifth time I use it or alter any file it asks me to back > it up and I say yes! > > I say for my basic structure because my elderly relatives don't really like > the way Gedcoms churn out data. 3. Hello Jane, Do you happen to be related to Richard Hannon of the Hannon/Beekman family? My Davenports and Hannons of Indiana are connected to him. Just thought I'd ask. :-) Mary Crutchfield ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, January 09, 2003 6:11 AM Subject: [DAVENPORT] Davenport "Proofs" of a Terry Relationship - 2 > Pamunkey Davenports: > > I checked THE CHRONICLES and I see I made a mistake in my earlier message. > The deeds to the three Sullivant men: Owen, John and Charles Sullivant from > Daniel Terry was NOT about 1741 but was 11 Oct 1733 and it was in Caroline > County not Goochland County. > > A month earlier 14 Sep 1733 James Terry deeded land to John Sullivant also > Caroline County. > > > > That is what happens when you write something without looking it up.
