    1. [DAVENPORT] New Davenport DNA results
    2. The results have come back for two more Davenport DNA tests. The first (kit #8666 as seen on the DavenportDNA page) claimed to be an Abemarle Davenport - from Abemarle Co. NC. His results matched exactly 25 of 25 to the other participant that claimed Abemarle genealogy. So yes - they are related. They are also a 24 of 25 much with the two Thomas of Dorchester individuals. The odds are that these two groups had a common ancestor in the last 400-500 years. The second test - kit #8742 - is a puzzler. He claims genealogy back to Humphrey Davenport of Barbados in the 1600s. However, his results are so different from any Davenport and any other results in the FamilyTree DNA database, that it will require further study. As one individual said "This is the most unusual haplotype I have seen!" I am waiting for more information from that participant and some DNA people. In light of this information - we could use another Humphrey Davenport descendant to be tested. Anybody out there? A test has now been ordered for a Rev. John of New Haven descendant. Anyone interesting in donating to help pay for this test - please email me at [email protected] We now have 16 participants with results in for 10. 1. [DAVENPORT] Rev. John Davenport DNA test
    2. One of the original Davenports arriving in the United States in the 1600s was the Rev. John Davenport. He was the most well known of about a half dozen Davenports that appeared in the Boston area during that time frame. In the past 150 years much research has been done tracing John back over 900 years ago to Orme de Auceporte (or other spellings). One of the goals of the Davenport Surname DNA Project is to see if any of these early Davenports had a recent common ancestor - are they related? If a line could be connected to the Rev. John then it could also be connected to Orme. There are not that many surviving Rev. John descendants. But now we have a documented descendant willing to take the DNA test. I would like to give him some financial assistance to pay for the 25 marker test. It will be $171. Are there people out there who would like to contribute to the cause? If so - contact me privately at [email protected] Thanks Bill Davenport [email protected] Davenport Surname DNA Project Administrator >http://www.DavenportDNA.com

    1. [DAVENPORT] Another Henry Davenport Enigma to Resolve
    2. A PAMUNKEY PROBLEM: The Bible record submitted by Nancy Ann Davenport, nee Pemberton, wife of Henry Davenport, Sr., of Cumberland-Buckingham, son of Thomas Davenport, Sr., and grandson of Davis Davenport, in her attempt to qualify for a Revolutionary Widow's pension has long been known and widely circulated. The record, provided the Pension Bureau of Washington City, allegedly consists of the birth record of the seven children, one son and six daughters, that Henry and Nancy Ann had following their marriage in 1770. Wilson Davenport, eldest child and only son, was recorded as having been born on 26Nov1772. Unless Wilson Davenport was allowed legal privileges not available to other young Virginians, there are at least a half dozen record evidences which strongly imply that he was born as much as five years before 1772--not the least of which is the fact that the Cumberland County Court granted him guardianship of his six minor orphaned sisters in 1792 when he was not yet age 20, if the 1772 birthdate was valid. We have the conundrum of Wilson having possibly been born as the eldest child in Henry, Sr.'s second family before the birth of Henry Davenport, Jr., the last son and child in Henry's first family. Would someone undertake to provide a rationale for the situation? Wilson Davenport was a man of uncommon talent, became an attorney quite early with a practice throughout Southwest Virginia east of the Blue Ridge, ultimately hanging out his shingle in Lynchburg, where he was a Captain of Militia and elected to the General Assembly, where he died suddenly in Richmond in the first few days of 1807 session. Although married, he left no issue. Also, legend has it, he had lost an arm in a hunting accident although where and when not stated. Henry Davenport, Jr., disinherited by Henry, Sr., in favor of Wilson, went to Halifax County, where he married Ann Davenport, a first cousin, but seemingly never prospered despite his family connections and prosperous relatives. He was either a tenant or an overseer variously in Halifax until 1811, never being taxed for more than a horse and some years not even that, when he married a second time, then he moved to Buckingham County, then to Prince Edward, and then back to Halifax where he was enumerated in the Census of 1830, and has been pursued no further--he was in his 60s by then. Henry had at least three daughters by Ann, more daughters and at least one son by his second wife. More work needed. But whatever, he was likely born after Wilson, who left an impressive number of record presences in a half dozen Southside counties in the 1790s and the first decade of the 19th Century. Was there mayhap an ulterior motive in the suppression of knowledge concerning Henry, Sr.'s first family among descendants of his second family? Henry, Sr.'s first family was a tangled web with birthdate problems of its own. John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ

    2. Kinfolks & Friends: I have been errant in responding to various messages and requests for the past four weeks, being caught up in the TV/Cable reporting of the War for Iraqi Freedom. Military history has always been a passion, and I have been amazed and enthralled by the way the Iraqi campaign unfolded--the strategy and the tactics. The 3rd Infantry Division's dash to Bagdad reminds me of the audacity of Jeb Stuart's Confederate Cavalry ride around the rear of the Army of the Potomac and some of the forays of Nathan Bedford Forrest when he was tying the Yankees in knots in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama by maneuvering Confederate Cavalry in such a manner as to keep ten times more Yankees engaged and chasing him than Forrest had troopers. As a WWII Marine, I revel in the exploits of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force--including the famed 7th Regiment (Belleau Woods, Guadacanal, wherein my younger brother served in Korea and my son during Viet Nam), 5th Regiment (Battle of the Marne, Guadacanal), and 4th Regiment (China Marines captured on Bataan, but reconstituted to be the first Marines into Tokyo). Then too, the 109th Medical Battalion, 34th Infantry Division (Monte Casino and the Italian campaign) wherein I served during Korea, was activated for this go around three months ago. Frankly, with the multiplicity of old memories involved, it has been hard for me to focus on genealogy. So now you know why I have not replied to various queries. John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ

    3. It's a long shot, but....My great uncle John Allen Davenport was born 1905 in Grayson Co., TX. He had at least five siblings, the oldest born around 1890 and most if not all named for kinfolk. But who was the ancestral John Allen? Don't know. My uncle's (and grandfather's) parents, James David Davenport and Nancy Dickens Davenport, were born, respectively, in Georgia and Kentucky, so there are definite loose ends here, but nonetheless probably worth some further checking. Give me an address and I'll mail you photocopied 1920 and '30 census forms.
