    3. I have family from Essex Co. NJ. Winans L. Davenport. b. March 8 1789. He had a son John Davenport. The only thing that I know is that he fought in the Civil war & was wounded & came home on leave. He returned to fighting and was not heard from again. John had a brother Anthony and that is my line. Anthony had a son Silas Anthony Davenport. That was my g grandfather b. May 10, 1878. I cant find anything before Winans. He was an Oyster fisherman that became disenchanted with his profession and moved to Delaware Co. Ohio. He was married to Catherine ?. I do know that he had a cousin Pheobe that married an Abner Mosier and they were from Essex co. also. http://www.matlack.com/history/index.htm

    2. BODY {font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt;} A possible explanation for website link problems. When someone using AOL creates a link - it becomes a clickable link to anyone else using AOL. It is usually blue or red and underlined. However, if the receiver is not using AOL then he sees a "double" non-clickable link. this is what it looks like. HREF="http://www.DavenportFamily.1colony.com">http://www.DavenportFamily.1co lony.com</A> The receiver need to copy and paste only the part in quotes and don't include the quotes. This one starts with "http" and ends in ".com" What I do, as an AOL user, is to include a ">" in front of the address to prevent AOL from interpreting it as an address. In that way it doesn't create the link the AOL way. If I know my message is only going to an AOL user I do it the normal way. Here is an example: >http://www.DavenportFamily.1colony.com Link I just created in the AOL method - <A href="http://www.DavenportFamily.1colony.com"> http://www.DavenportFamily.1colony.com</A> Hope this helps. 3. I just finished searching the 1860 Union County, New Jersey census records looking for my g grandfather John DAVENPORT. The earliest record I can find for him (other than his Civil War records) is the 1870 census in Union County. He was born in NJ and lived in NJ when he enlisted. My next effort will be Hunterdon County. This man has eluded me now for over 30 years but I will find him! Anyway, while searching I did find a Silas DAVENPORT and thought I would pass the information along to the list. He is living in the 3rd Ward Elizabeth, New Jersey. Since the parents were born in Conn and the children in Long Island perhaps they have been in hiding from someone out there. Silas Davenport, 49, M, Law agent, b. Conn. Betsy A. 52, F, b. Conn. 2. Hello everyone, I wanted to let all know that I've added a new page to my DavenportFamily site. I'm calling it the Davenport Community page. I wanted a communication type page, so that maybe everyone could work together on this Davenport puzzle we are building! On this new page, you will find: Community Corkboard- here you can read & post messages. The categories of discussion at present are: Queries, Opinions and Book Lookups. Queries & opinions are obvious. The Book Lookups is where people could list Davenport related books they possess and are willing to do lookups for others. If you have an idea for another topic, please let me know! DavenportFamily Guestbook- has been moved here for easier access. I thought maybe more people would sign it this way! Reunion list- People can send me the info for Davenport related family reunions, which will be posted on that section. Researcher's List- I would like to list each & every Davenport researcher here, for those looking for help with their own family line. If you'd like to be here (and I hope you all will), just send me your name, email address and which DavenportFamily you are willing to help with! I look forward to hearing from you all. Please enjoy the new page (and the old). Teri Dimmett Site Administrator [email protected] <A HREF="http://www.DavenportFamily.1colony.com">http://www.DavenportFamily.1colony.com</A>

    3. Bill - Mailed my DNA kit April 28. I agree with your latest circular letter, about closing loopholes and firming our consensus on confidence levels. We can never enjoy 100% certainty in 100% of our genealogical "facts," but now is the time to focus on setting and defining confidence levels. When I took (and barely passed!) statistical quality control methods 30-some years ago, we used technology that has since been swept away by advances in computers. (Seen a slide-rule lately?) But one thing hasn't changed: if you want a specific (say, 98%) AOQL, only you can define various confidence levels. I keep marveling at the Davenport "lines". I've only been researching the family tree seriously since last July, admittedly, but so far find more impenetrable thickets than "lines." I'll frankly be surprised if my DNA results place me squarely in any one line - Rev. John Davenport's or anybody else's. (I've become skeptical of family folklore - the more venerable, the more questionable.) Of course, should that happen, I'll be delighted. But, eventually, the DNA will place us somewhere in the overall Davenport horde. I have no doubt there are kinsmen out there, equally eager to make the connection. On that last note: For months now, I've been running into a brick wall with my grandfather, Francis Marion Davenport, of Sherman, Texas. Born 1893, served in the Navy before and during WWI, stationed at old Brooklyn Navy Yard 1917-1919. Married twice; first wife's name unk. Second marriage, 1918 or '19, to Grace Alma Schmidt of Highland Falls, NY. Wedding probably in the city (Brooklyn or Manhattan). Returned to Texas with bride. Son Francis Jr. born in Sherman Sep 1919. Returned to Highland Falls in time for birth there of second son, David, in 1922. Marriage ended in divorce in the 1930s. Grace and the two boys stayed in Highland Falls with her extended family until about WWII. Family names, inter alia, Schmidt, Fischang, Schroegler, Bierholtz. Francis senior (my grandfather) largely drops out of sight after that. His parents were James David Davenport, b. Georgia, and Nancy Dickens, b. Kentucky. Other siblings include brothers Mark, b. 1906-1910; John Allen,C b. 1905; Robert E. Lee; and Rice Maxey; and sister Fannie Mae. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, April 29, 2003 11:39 AM Subject: [DAVENPORT] Need to identify Davenports > BODY {font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt;} > > > > > Hello List: > > I have added a new page to the >http://www.DavenportDNA.com site called > "Davenport Lines". 1. [DAVENPORT] Need to identify Davenports
    2. BODY {font-family: Arial; font-size: 10pt;} Hello List: I have added a new page to the >http://www.DavenportDNA.com site called "Davenport Lines". I need your help. In order to get a "true" representative DNA sample from each Davenport line we need more than one test subject per line. Ideally we should get a sample from each of the major branches for each line. Using my ancestor as an example - Thomas of Dorchester. Thomas had four sons that lived to adulthood - Charles, Jonathan, Ebenezer, and John. I would try to find a descendant from each of those sons. In another line - The Rev. John Davenport had one son. So we could look down a generation and look at John Jr.'s sons. The rationale for this is simple. Each of the lines we are tracking is at least 10-15 generations long. In those hundreds of years and thousands of fathers - if any of them had an illegitimate child, adoption, name change, etc.. and that son carried on the Davenport name - then the DNA would be different. It may be that we tested the one branch that had an "event" and it would not be a true representative of that line. So by testing the other branches we can find a "baseline" or standard for that line. The new "Davenport Lines" link is an attempt to decide where we should focus our efforts. It lists each of the major lines in the USA and then the sons I would like to channel down through. I have highlighted the branches we have covered. This is by no means saying we don't want "covered" branches tested any more. We want as many of each as possible. Since I am not the "authority" on any of these lines - I need you to look at this new page and tell me what I missed. >http://davenportdna.com/lines.htm< If I left out a son, or a son died without offspring, or you can supply some dates, or even if you think I left out a line - let me know at <A href="mailto:[email protected]"> [email protected]</A> So far we have 17 participants with results in for ten. 1. [DAVENPORT] DAVENPORT/Fanny DAWSON
    2. I am looking for anyone who may have such a combination in his/her database. My 3x great aunt was Fanny DAWSON, b ca 1811 in Ematris, County Monaghan, Ireland, and who probably was in Argenteuil County, Canada, specifically the area known as the Gore, by 1824. I have a copy of a letter my 2x great aunt, her niece, wrote enumerating all of her aunts and uncles' marriages, and all she knew was that "Aunt Fanny married a DAVENPORT". This marriage would probably have occurred ca 1830-35, and not necessarily in Canada. Her brother, my 3x ggf, was Richard FLEMING DAWSON, and he came to the US from Canada ca 1834 and married in PA in 1844. I can find no evidence of Fanny's union to a DAVENPORT, nor even the name on censuses of that area for 1825 or 1831. Without a first name, searching in the US is impossible. There are people whom I know to be connected to me thru other Canadian DAWSONS who say she married a man named Henry HAMMOND. The problem I have with that is that there was another Fanny DAWSON born about the same time, to another set of parents. I am very reluctant to accept this HAMMOND/DAWSON marriage as that of my aunt's without proof that there is not a DAVENPORT marriage as reported by my 2x great aunt. Can anyone claim *my* Fanny DAWSON as an ancestor? Thanks, Lynn PRETTYMAN Baltimore, MD USA [email protected]

    1. [DAVENPORT] Hunphrey Davenport DNA results
    2. On April 22, 2003 I reported to the list we had some "puzzling" results for one of our DNA test participants. It was "so different from any Davenport and any other results in the FamilyTree DNA database." Now for the rest of the story. The results of the first participant from the Humphrey of Barbados line had come in. It showed he could not possibly be related to any of the other Davenport tested so far. Also, all other Davenports, even those known not to be related, had a DNA pattern that indicated Western Europe origins. That was expected. The Humphrey participant had a pattern that is typical of Middle East origin. This Middle East origin could be 500 years ago, 1000 years, or several thousand. Who knows. But it was unlike any other tested Davenport. There are a couple ways this could be explained. I will call him by his kit number - 8742. 8742's branch of the Humphrey line is Humphrey (b. abt 1600) > William (1664) > William (1696) > William (1744) > William (1766) > James (1824) > etc... There may have been some kind of "paternity event" such as an illegitimate child, an adoption, a Davenport raising a non-Davenport's son who changes his name, or a male Davenport remarrying and her child adopts the Davenport name. Anything that broke the male to male "bloodline." If a male non-Davenport "snuck" in anywhere down this branch - that could explain things. The second possibility would be if something happened prior to Humphrey. Researchers have determined that Humphrey was born in England - the source of most Davenports. It is possible that Humphrey or one his ancestors changed his name to Davenport - for whatever reason. In other words he never was related to the "resident" Davenports. Humphrey had several children. 8742 only represents one branch. We need to test other branches - such as his son Humphrey, Jr. If another branch matched 8742 then we can conclude that Humphrey was not a Davenport as we know it. We would then expect his other branches to match 8742 too. If, however, the other branch did not match 8742, then we have a different story. If branch "#2" matched other Davenports then Humphrey really was a Davenport and an "event" happened in 8742's line. But there is the possibility branch #2 doesn't match either one. We will deal with that if it comes. Sooo... before we can make any conclusions we need to test the other Humphrey branches. If there are any Humphrey, or possible Humphrey descendants out there or if you know one - please email me. Bill Davenport [email protected] Davenport Surname DNA Project Administrator

    1. [DAVENPORT] To All Davenport's
    2. Hello- Recent DNA testing has brought about some misconceptions concerning the family lines of Butch and myself. Butch's test, #8742 at DavenportDNA.com indicates that his line, that of William b. 1664 Coventry, CT- son of Humphrey b.ca. 1600, is not genetically related to the Thomas of Dorchester line b. 1615 Dorchester, England. This in no way indicates the fate of my line, that of Humphrey Jr b. 12 Sep 1656- son of Humphrey b. ca. 1600. There has been no tests done on anyone of my line. Until someone in my line has been tested, it's best not to make assumptions. Our credibility has also been questioned due to lack of sources on our site. Our sources have always been available upon request, no such request has ever been made. I'm in the process of adding our sources to our site. As I have not put these sources into my genealogy program, this will take some time. I must go through literally mountains of paperwork to find "each and every" source. Sources for Orme's maternal line are posted, as are sources for Ordgar down to Orme. Orme down to Roger, son of Vivian are also on the site. Our motto is no longer "We are right until proven wrong", due to the fact that this was offensive to some people. Our motto is now "We believe we are correct, please prove us otherwise" If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at: [email protected] Thank you for listening.....Cuzzin Teri http://DavenportFamily.1colony.com
