1. [DAVENPORT] Newberry DNA reuslts and more
2. Hello List: I planned on making this post a couple weeks ago. Five test results were due about May 23, 2003. However, the University of Arizona lab that Family Tree DNA uses, was training a couple new people and one technician just got married. So everything has been delayed a couple weeks. The five included two Newberrys, a Mackinac Island Michigan Davenport, Clark County Kentucky Davenport, and a "family folklore says Rev. John Davenport." I got tired of waiting and will report on the two Newberrys that did come in. This brings our total to 21 participants with results in for 13. ------------ Before I describe the results -- a couple announcements: I have added another Davenport line to the DavenportDNA website. It is Thomas Davenport, "the Pioneer." Thomas, born 1682, was from the Philipstown, Putnam County, New York area. So if there are any "Thomas the Pioneer" descendants -- we are interested in participants. I expect the results for the "documented" descendant of The Rev. John Davenport, (New Haven), will be back by the second week of June 2003. ------------ Now for the results. There were two Newberrys. An Isaac > Francis > Isaac and an Isaac > Francis > William. The results seemed to verify they are related. There was a 24 of 25 marker match. The one marker difference just means that somewhere in one of the two lines after Francis there was a mutation on that location. Mutations that show up in these tests are neither good nor bad. It doesn't affect an individual. Since both these individuals are from the Francis branch - we don't know which participant's line was the original and which had the mutation. This could be discovered if we could test a descendant from one of Francis' brothers - William, Isaac, or Joseph. The more interesting thing about the Newberry results was that it was several markers off the next closest Davenport. They are about 8 markers away from the Pamunkeys and 12 from the Thomas of Dorchester line. In other words there is no common ancestor - at lease in the normal genealogical time frame. This is assuming other Isaac branches are close to the Francis branch. ---------- I will report on the other three test results once they become available - hopefully early next week. ------------ For you participants with tests still out - FTDNA now has a progress report for your test on your personal page at FTDNA. If you have questions -- contact me. ------------ Warning - For those of you not interested in some of the more technical parts of this DNA stuff -- you can stop reading here. This is for those who have been keeping track of the DNA DYS numbers. Family Tree DNA announced on May 19 that the results for DYS# 464 have been adjusted -- down one repeat. So if: 464a was 16 it would become 15 464b = 16 => 15 464c = 17 => 16 464d = 18 => 17 This change affects all FTDNA participants so it doesn't affect how you compare to other FTDNA participants. For those participants that keep track of such things -- revisit your personal page at FTDNA to see your new numbers. I have already made the changes on the DavenportDNA website. --------------- Bill Davenport [email protected] Davenport Surname DNA Project Administrator >http://www.DavenportDNA.com

1. Re: [DAVENPORT] DNA
2. There will be some more DNA discussion coming very soon. I am expecting several more results soon - possibly even today. The Y-DNA test we are using tells us the odds of two males having a common ancestor. It cannot tell us who that ancestor is or when he lived. But by testing different branches of a family we can get a pretty good idea. It is not a paternity test. There are many variables involved but the most commonly used figures are for an exact 25/25 match between two males with the same surname there is a 50% chance they had a common ancestor within the last 7 generations, and a 90% chance in the last 23 generations. For a good explanation how this works and more stats go to the Blair website: >http://blairgenealogy.com/dna/dna101.html Bill Davenport [email protected] Davenport Surname DNA Project Administrator --------- In a message dated 5/23/2003 9:52:29 AM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: > I haven't seen any mention of DNA for some time. 1. Re: [DAVENPORT] As to German Baker.relative to Richard, son of Absalom
2. Jo Lynn: Can't help you at the moment, not having access to my Chronicles files, but the Record was clear in directing the Court Order jointly to Richard Davenport and German Baker. Baker clearly had some degree of responsibility to the Tax Assessor who initiated the action. I'm going to be reading Powhatan Deeds at the Winchester, Virginia, Family History Center in early June (microfilm on order). Perhaps I'll find your answer there. Doc

3. Help! What does this mean? Doc once wrote: "Richard Davenport (of Absalom) and his bride Jenny Baker were living on land in Cumberland County that had come to Richard by his marriage to Alice Cannifax. On May 25, 1801 Richard Davenport and Jerman Baker, as a tax unity, were ordered by the Cumberland Court to list their taxable property with the Cumberland Commissioner of Revenues." Jerman Baker was an attorney and was not related to Jenny Baker. He lived in Richmond with his wife Martha Bolling Eppes. So what could he be doing as a "tax unity" with Richard? I'd welcome your thoughts on the subject. Jo Lynn

1. [DAVENPORT] 1878 Mrs. Millie Ann Wilson/1886 Mrs. Millie Ann Davenport
2. Thelmarie Curtis
3. Am looking for any information on the marriage in 1878-79 of MRS. MILLIE ANN WILSON [my GGrandmother] to JAMES ALLEN, possibly in Trinity Co., Texas. Mrs. Millie Ann Wilson was the widow of JOHN D. WILSON, Sr. who was born in Louisiana abt 1831. He died in Trinity Co., Texas, in abt 1877, leaving his wife, Millie Ann, and three children. The JAMES ALLEN family was located on the 1880 Census living in Goshen, Henderson Co., Texas. The three children were listed as John Wilson, age 10 [my Grandfather]; George Wilson, age 7; and Mary Wilson, age 6. The place of birth for James Allen is given as New York in about 1838. Millie Ann was born in Alabama in about 1847, her maiden surname is unknown. If you have any information on Mrs. Millie Ann Wilson, James Allen, and/or any member of this family, please contact me. Thelmarie Curtis [email protected] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Who was JAMES DAVENPORT in Parker Co., Texas? I have located a marriage for a "Mrs. M. A. ALLEN to James DOVENPORT (probably misspelled...for DAVENPORT) - Date: 31 October 1886 Place: Parker Co., Texas. This information fits with some of the family stories I've heard, but I need confirmation from the DAVENPORT relatives that this bride is definitely my Great Grandmother, who was the widow, Mrs. Millie Ann WILSON, who married JAMES ALLEN, who then was the widow, MRS. M. A. ALLEN who married JAMES DAVENPORT in Parker Co., Texas. If you have any information on Mrs. Millie Ann Wilson, James Allen, Mrs. Millie Ann Davenport, James Davenport and/or any member of this family, please contact me Thelmarie Curtis - [email protected]

2. Jeanne Chandler
3. John: Thanks so much! I do have copies of the geneology, including the anecdote about Abraham "going to hell" with his sons during the Revolution. I didn't know about Altona and will certainly try to make arrangements to see it. One of our sons lives in Harper's Ferry, so we can go see both at the same time. I'm currently very active in historical restoration here in St. Mary's County and am president of the Historic St. Mary's City Foundation (the fund raising arm of St. Mary's City). We are currently rebuilding the first brick Catholic church in English North America which was built in St. Mary's City in 1667. The brick foundation is still there, and it's 5 feet deep and 3 feet wide, quite an impressive piece of construction. We're rebuilding as we speak, with bricks made from our own clay and fired in a wood kiln, oyster shell mortar and sappling post scaffolding. It's a fascinating project for anyone who loves history and really fun to watch the walls going up! The property also includes the site of a Colonial parish church and the old Charles Town railroad station, which Henry and wife Faye recently restored.
