Clay Clay, do you have any further information on this White family. I am trying to locate the parents of Joseph F. White, born, NC between 1855 and 1858. As of 1878 I know he was in Cocke, TN because he married Synthia Ann Queen there. Later (after 1894) they were in Wise Co, VA and then in 1910 they were in Claiborne, TN. There seemed to be several generations of James Whites in the family. 1910 census lists Perry living with Joseph and his family - lists him as "brother." I was curious about the family that you mentioned since Gilbert was from NC and died in TN and had a son James. I have hit a brick wall with Joseph and would appreciate any information that you might have. Thank you. Sharon Flora -- Researcher: Family Surnames of SW VA, TN, E. 2. Willa: There were Pamunkey Davenports in Rutherford County by 1779. John Davenport, son of Matthew Davenport of Bedford County, grandson of Glover Davenport of Bedford/Franklin County, and great-grandson of Martin Davenport, Sr., of Hanover, all Virginia, located in Rutherford County, North Carolina, with his King stepfather c1779-80, and died there as a centenarian . John had a large family, some of whom moved away and some stayed. If you're just starting, look into the Rutherford Court House and Library first. John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ

    3. Doc, Janet and all: I am going to show my ignorance now and ask some basic questions. I have been a member of this mailing list for some time, but have not had time to do a lot of primary research. I love reading all the information posted here, though and appreciate the work all of your do, especially Doc!! Now, Janet, in your post you mentioned Thomas Davenport, son of Martin - is that the Thomas Davenport who ended up in Burke county, North Carolina? Also, was Thomas' son Martin married twice - the second time to a Jane Browning? I believe Martin and Jane had several children and one of the sons was named David Davenport who married Dorothy ? (Baker) and eventually moved to Cherokee County (later Clay County) North Carolina. David had 11 sons, one of whom was Thomas C. Davenport, my ancestor. Thomas had a son named Lewis; Lewis had a son named Virgil F. who had a son named Gordon Davenport, my father. Am I on track here? Thanks for any confirmation. 3. Thomas Davenport son of Martin Davenport and grandson of Davis Thomas Davenport and his wife Dorothy have two children Martin and Dorothy they both married Browning. Wonder if the Two Browning could be related I found Dorothy who said to have married John Browning and Martin wife was Jane Browning There are folks who as Jane name is Martha Jane Browning and this her father but I do not see a Martha or Jane or even a Davenport mention in his will. The John mention is said to Dorothy husband January Court 1787 WILL OF NICHOLAS BROWNING In the name of God Amen. I, Nicholas Browning of the State of North Carolina and County of Caswell being weak in body but of sound mind, memory and understanding, do this twenty-third of September in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty six, make and publish this my Last Will and Testament and none other. First, I recommend my soul to God and my body to be buried in a Christian manner at the direction of my Executor as I shall nominate and appoint - and so to the worldly estate where with it hath pleased God to bestow me, I do dispose of the same in manner and form following, viz: Item - First I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Sarah the third part of all my estate, real and personal as not to disturb Joseph Jones where he now lives. Secondly, at her death for all the land to be sold to the highest bidder and equally divided between my two daughters Sarah and Jean, to them and their heirs and assigns forever. Item - I give and bequeath to my son, Enos Browning one Feather Bed and Furniture to him, his heirs and assigns forever. Item - I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Jean, one Feather Bed and furniture and forty shillings in money, more than to those above mentioned. Thirdly, after the legacies are taken out of my estate (for) Enos and daughter Jean, the remainder that is left, to be equally divided between my two daughters above mentioned, to be sold and equally divided. Fourthly, my son Francis, John, Charles and my daughters Mary and Elizabeth are cut off from having any part or right of title to any of my Estate wherewith I am now possessed with only one shilling sterling to each of them at my decease. Fifthly, I nominate and appoint Edmond Browning, my beloved brother, and Joshua Browning my whole and sole executors of this my last Will and Testament, revoking all other will of wills, and this only to be my last will and testament and none other. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this Day and Datge before written. Signed, sealed and delivered in Nicholas Browning (seal) the presence of Isaac Boren James Hopper (his mark) Proven in court by oath of Isaac Boren Jan 1787. What do all think? Janet

    1. A Correction and Additional Information from a Rootsweb Subscriber
    2. PAMUNKEY DAVENPORTS & OTHERS INTERESTED: We get so little response from our various Rootsweb postings any more that we wonder if anyone is reading what we write. We could say that we switched Davenport wives in the James Davenport of Burke County, etc, exposition this morning purposely to test you, but the fact is that old age affects the memory, and we just got the Davenport wives backend assward, as my Grandpa Baldis, the cussing champion of Macon County, Illinois, was wont to say. In deference, a DAVENPORT-L subscriber corrected us privately, but her message was so lucid and helpful that it needs to be circulated to all. Her name has been removed, but the rest of the correction and amplification is as sent, to wit: Doc, This is for you only. William Wiseman was married to Mary and William White was married to Sophia, you reversed them. Cordia Anne was never identified for sure but was thought to be a Davenport because of the Glover name. There is a family story in the White family that Sophia and William White took in "two of her poor relatives" while living in SC (1755-1775) I had thought it was Coles, but is it possible James went to SC? Also, who are the Randal, Jesse and William Davenports in Burke?. There is a William living not far from Martin in 1800 who has sons. Martin's son William didn't marry until 1803 and had no sons. My guess was the William of William and Comfort fame since they had lots of kids, but I couldn't prove it. A Randal went North, Jesse was a Blacksmith, Some of Wm and Comfort's family stayed in Surry, some went to KY. What is your take on these Davenports? Doc back on line: William and Comfort Davenport were allegedly from Accomack County, Eastern Shore, Virginia. They were strong Baptists and belonged to an arm of Eaton's Baptist Church located in the Forks of the Yadkin, then Rowan, now Davie, County, North Caroline. They were located due North of Eaton's Church, which put them at least 75 to 100 miles east of Mountain Pamunkey Davenports. The Davenports of William and Comfort are readily identifiable in their migration North after 1800, first to Casey County, Kentucky, and then to Central Illinois, particularly to Sangamon County and nearby. As to Randall Davenport, who if I recall correctly, went from North Carolina to Tennessee and then to Illinois, I'm nonplussed. He doesn't fit any of the Southern Davenport patterns. We know that Reuben Davenport, likely the eldest son of John Davenport, son of William of Spotsylvania and grandson of Martin, Sr., of Hanover, left tracks in Randolph County, North Carolina, in the early 1790s, and then went to the mountains of Wilkes, later Ashe, County, North Carolina, having apparently married a Mennonite or Dunker girl. Reuben remained with the Swiss German settlement on New River in Wilkes/Ashes for only a short time, then moved west into Tennessee. As the result of Reuben's taking up with the Germans, John Davenport, who had five other sons, joined by his brother Thomas from Spotsylvania, and moved to Laurens County, South Carolina, before any more of his sons got mixed up with the Mennonite, Dunkers, and Quakers that surrounded him Randolph County. All but two of the sons of Augustine Davenport, brother of John, married either Dunker, Mennonite, Quaker, or Swiss German, and moved with their in-laws north of the Ohio River, first to Ohio, then to Indiana. Joel Davenport, second son of Augustine, married Sarah Boyd, a Davenport cousin, had five sons and died in 1807. All five of his sons moved to Indiana, 1816-1829. Augustine Davenport, a younger brother of Joel, married Jincey Bass, sister of the famed Baptist minister at Sandy Creek, and lived out his life in Randolph County, dying there in 1847. My great-great grandfather Augustine Davenport, Jr., son of Joel, married Elizabeth Hoover (German Swiss) in 1815, and moved with Hoover in-laws to Indiana in 1821. His eldest son, Henry Hoover Davenport, my great-grandfather was born in Randolph County in 1821, went to Indiana as a babe in arms. But I ramble. John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ

    1. James Davenport of Burke County, NC, and Pendleton Disrict, SC, Identified
    2. PAMUNKEY DAVENPORT & OTHERS INTERESTED: One of the happy circumstances in genealogy is when you identify one member of a family, it frequently leads to a second or more identifications. We have such a situation relative to James Davenport, father of Chappel Davenport (d. 1859) of Nelson County, Virginia. DNA analysis tells us that the two descendants of Chappel that we have among us are Pamunkey, i.e., Davis Davenport, descendants. Chappel was born in Prince George County, Virginia, per 1850 Census enumeration, in 1778-79, which logically led his descendants among us to believe they were Prince George Davenports, heretofore identified as a totally separate line of Colonial Virginia Davenports from the Pamunkeys. If a Prince George Davenport descendant has the same DNA as do descendants of Martin, Thomas, and Elias, sons of Davis Davenport, we have a whole new ball game in so far as the Pamunkey origin--and the Bastard Hypothesis goes out the window, i.e., we must consider that Davis Davenport had a common ancestry with the Prince George line, hence did not have a father of a different surname. However, before dumping almost seven years of work on the Pamunkey origin, we look for a missing James among Davis' descendants, who could have been the father of Chappel, and determine whether that James could have taken himself to Prince George County and out of the Pamunkey drift. We do know that James Davenport, father of Chappel, was in Bristol Parish (far west) and the Prince George Davenports were Martin's Brandon Parish (far east) in Prince George County record associations. In the Pamunkey Genealogical Chart we have not one James Davenport, identified as Pamunkey, who had disappeared from his family in the 1760s, we have (or had) two: (1) James of Henry, of Thomas, Sr., of Cumberland, and (2) James of Glover, of Martin, Sr., of Hanover/Amherst. On the plus side, we had a James Davenport appear among the descendants of Martin, Sr., of Hanover, in Western North Carolina who did not belong to the Davenports there, but was employed by Davenport in-laws prior to the Revolution, was engaged on the patriot side during the Revolution, appeared in Court and swore out warrants against at least a dozen Tories, surely served in the Militia and likely was at the Battle of King's Mountain under Captain Martin Davenport. Following the Revolution this James married, then moved independently of the Pamunkey Davenports and their in-laws to Pendleton District (far west), South Carolina, and had no further association with the North Carolina Mountain Pamunkeys. Family historians and genealogists of the Mountain Pamunkeys have been clear that James Davenport was not one of them. We had heretofore suspected that James of the Revolutionary years in North Carolina was the missing James of Henry. We had considered that James of Glover had died because his last appearances in Amherst records (Court) were as a minor, once for allegedly joining in the killing of a cow belonging to a neighbor and stealing the meat (not guilty), and once for joining his mother in assaulting a Deputy Sheriff who was serving a writ (peace bond ordered both he and his mother). Taking heed of DNA and the fact that Chappel Davenport's father had been a James, we are testing the hypothesis even now that said James was James, Jr., eldest son in the first family of Henry Davenport, of Cumberland, a son of Thomas, Sr., and a grandson of Davis Davenport. James, Jr., (his Uncle James, of Cumberland and Halifax, was James, Sr.) got into debt troubles in Cumberland Court in the mid-1760s and absconded, i.e., skulked away hastily and secretly. (In those days every County had a Debtor's Prison, and those who did not pay Court judgments awarded against them could be arrested by the Sheriff, at the behest of the creditor or holder of the judgment, and put in Prison bounds until the debt or judgment was paid. Debtor's Prison was not a lockup with food and shelter provided at public expense. It was a specific area, laid out and clearly identified, generally one block or square centering on the Court House or the Sheriff's home, wherein the debtor was required to stay and to provide his own shelter and food until the judgment or debt was paid, the creditor or judgment holder relented, or the debtor pleaded Poverty before the Court, not easily done in those days when even scrap iron and old, decrepit chattel had value. Apparently James of Henry found the prospect of being confined to Cumberland Prison Bounds daunting and took himself out of the jurisdiction of the Sheriff, and went down the Appomattox River, which went through the middle of Bristol Parish before it joined the James River.) For a fast finish, having James of Henry assigned to Prince George County as a refuge from the Cumberland Sheriff, and, therefore could not have been the James who spent the Revolution among the North Carolina Mountain Pamunkeys, we now review our conclusion that James of Glover had died and align him with the Mountain folk. A quick circumstantial identification has resulted, for James Davenport of the North Carolina backcountry worked for William Wiseman (wife Sophia Davenport) and William White (wife Mary Davenport), both of wives being daughters of Thomas Davenport, eldest son of Martin, Sr., of Hanover. Thomas' only son was Captain Martin Davenport. Thomas had a grandson named Davenport Wiseman, and he had a great grandson named Glover Davenport Wiseman. Glover Davenport Wiseman was the son of Thomas Wiseman, son of William Wiseman and Sophia Davenport, and his wife Cordia Ann White, who was the daughter of William White and Mary Davenport. For the Wiseman-White identifications, we check to Maribeth Lang Vineyard in her book, "William Wiseman and the Davenport" (1997). The James Davenport identification is ours, for why would Glover Davenport, second son of Martin, Sr., of Hanover, get a namesake in the North Carolina Mountains if there had not been some contact by a member of Glover's family. Glover Davenport Wiseman was born in the Mountains at least ten years after Glover Davenport had died in Franklin County, Virginia, a far piece from Burke County, North Carolina. We think we've found a rationale in James Davenport, "who was not one of us," having been the missing James, son of Glover. This one appears to be a slam dunk. John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ

    1. DNA test results - May 24, 2005 - Part 3
    2. This is part 3 of a report on recent test results for the Davenport Surname DNA project. The first was May 24th. We are trying to get DNA samples from all of the branches of the various Davenport lines around the world to see how we are related. For more information and to see the results go to http://www.DavenportDNA.com As of May 24th we have 66 participants with complete results in for 60. --------------------------------------- Kit # 32864 turned out to be very interesting. His line is as follows: Chappell Davenport (b.1779) married Nancy Camden in 1807 > William (b. 1810) > Chappell (b.1847) > James (b.1877). There was good evidence that Chappell was a "Prince George" Davenport. The time and place of his birth was right - in Prince George County, Virginia, among other things. The Prince George Davenports are believed to be part of the James River Davenports, and therefore possibly descended from Lancelot Davenport. When his results came in - he matched the Pamunkeys. Which was not expected and could also stir things up. This brought up the possibility that the Pamunkeys might be descended from known Davenports - Lancelot's group - sometime before Davis Davenport. However, the more likely explanation is that Chappell is and always was a Pamunkey. These test results have spawned new research in the counties surrounding Prince George and it is now looking like Chappell will soon find a home. Watch for Doc's notices. --------------------------------------- Now for a few notices. ---------- Several gracious individuals have agreed to help pay for Davenport DNA tests. We have some funds available for specific lines. If you believe you are a part of any of the lines below and would like to obtain the funding - please contact me. Or, if you would like to contribute - contact me. Descendant of Richard Davenport (Humphrey > Richard) -- A 25 marker test may be available at no cost to you. Descendant of the James River Davenports (Lancelot and others) -- Portion of 25 marker test Descendent of Absolom Davenport (Davis > Richard) -- one half of 25 marker test Descendent of Absolom Davenport (Davis > Richard) -- one half of 25 marker test (combined with above = whole test) Descendent of Richard Davis of 17th Century Northside New Kent (now King & Queen County) Virginia. He may be father of Davis Davenport. -- A 37 marker test at no cost. ---------- And finally. To help verify the various Davenport lines , we need to test descendents of branches that split as far back as possible. If these descendents match, we are fairly certain what the "original" Y-DNA looked like. Any minor variations (mutations) in one branch may also help place others with unknown ancestry into that particular branch. Below is a list of some of the branches we are particularly interested in. If you are one or know of one - please contact me. Any Davenport line that traces back to Cheshire England. Any Rev. John of New Haven (1597-1670) descendent Albemarles - Richard (1642-1714) > Richard (1674-?) Thomas of Dorchester - Thomas (~1615-1685) > Ebenezer (1661-1738) Newberry - Isaac (d.1749) > William - and - Isaac > Isaac Any Davenport descended from Capt. Richard Davenport of Boston (1606-1665) Humphrey of Barbados - Humphrey (1660-?) > Richard Pamunkeys - Davis (~1660-?) > Richard (1704-1774) - and - Davis > John (1698-?) Any Davenport descended from Lancelot Davenport or the James River Davenports Any Davenport descended from Thomas the Pioneer (1682-1759) Any Davenport descended from Col. George Davenport (1783-1845) --------------------------------------- This and all previous reports can be seen on the News page at >http://www.DavenportDNA.com If anyone would like to join the DNA project or has any questions please contact me. 3. How wonderful to be able to 'see' Doc and his wife in person..... Thank you for sharing.... a handsome couple!......... Wish we could find a connection to be a cousin too..........:( Guess we must be cousins with someone.......... but who???? Bonnie & Deja ----- Original Message ----- From: JG Russell To: DAVENPORT-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, May 30, 2005 6:38 PM Subject: [DAVENPORT] Memorial Day with Doc I had the great good fortune of spending a good part of today, Memorial Day 2005, visiting with John Scott "Doc" Davenport and his lovely wife Dorothy at their New Jersey home. I have to admit I went down there with a bit of trepidation: I am such a newbie at family history research compared to Doc that I was half-afraid he'd hear one of my dumb questions or half-baked theories and chase me out with a broom. Nothing could be further from the truth: these are lovely generous people and I'm even more delighted than I was before that Doc's my cousin -- even if I do have to go back to Davis's son Martin before we hit a common ancestor! I arrived around 10 a.m. and was ushered into their historic farmhouse home and into Doc's study. We talked about his family (current) and mine (current) and wandered off into tangents on our family (ancestral). We shared stories about mistakes we've made in research (Doc? make a mistake?? dare we believe it???) and things we'd like to accomplish. Dorothy serves as a docent at the Longstreet Museum Farm, so we broke to take her there and then grabbed a quick bite at one of the better of New Jersey's wonderful diners. I was introduced to Doc's son and daughter-in-law who live nearby and am pleased to report that they are every bit as nice as their parents. I had originally gone down there hoping to get help with some of my Baker family conundrums (Thomas Baker married Dorothy Davenport, daughter of Martin and granddaughter of Davis). Doc had indicated that he was looking for some editorial help to polish off the upcoming Chronicles. I'm pleased to say we reached a meeting of the minds. I'd say it was a fair trade, except that I think I got the better of the bargain. And, much more than any help I may get with Baker issues, I very much hope that I made some friends. We can all be very proud of our family historian cousin.
