PAMUNKEY DAVENPORTS AND OTHERS INTERESTED: Recent developments have brought to the fore the need to define who qualifies as a PAMUNKEY DAVENPORT, viz. (1) The best and longest identified line of among us does not have the now strongly established Pamunkey Davenport DNA. Another line from Martin, Sr., with a strong, albeit circumstantial, paper trail has the same problem. Both lines are distinctly different from each other as well as from the Pamunkey DNA. Are these aberrant lines Pamunkey Davenports? (2) Richard Davenport, Sr., of Albemarle (son of Richard, Sr., of Caroline, and grandson of Davis Davenport), in his will made in August 1792, directed that Slave Martin, born in January 1790, was to be set at liberty on his 21st birthday. On the Albemarle Personal Property Tax List of 1811 (assessed after 1Mar and before 1Jun), "Martin Davenport (Free Negro)" appeared charged for a Poll Tax. The listing continued annually through 1815. The anomaly of this listing was that there was a separate listing for Free Negroes and Mulattos. Martin Davenport was not listed there, but was listed among the Whites, always identified "(Free Negro)," a practice consistent for all five years that he was Albemarle assessed. His tax status was no different from those on the Free Negroes and Mulattos list, each assessed for one Poll and such horses as they owned. Martin Davenport (Free Negro) was clearly different to the Tax Assessor in some manner from others of his identified ilk. Richard Davenport, Sr., of Albemarle, had a White son named Martin. Did he also have a Negro son named Martin? If so, that son would have been a Mulatto, and would not have been identified, per a rather rigorous custom of that day, as a Negro. The matter has the potential for rampant speculation. Whatever, Martin (Free Negro) was a Davenport to the Tax Commissioner. Are his descendants, if any, Pamunkey Davenports? (3) John Davenport, on the Free Negro and Mulatto list, in Charlotte County, was likely an issue of either Pamunkey or Prince George Davenports. Free mulatto males of the first order obtained their status because they had White mothers. If the son of a Pamunkey mother, was John Davenport, Mulatto, a Pamunkey? (4) William Davenport, son of James Davenport, Jr., and a man of prominence in Charlottesville, county seat of Albemarle, long considered to have been childless, at his death in late 1805 made a devisement to Sophie Shiplet "to be paid when she comes of age" that strongly suggests that she was his natural daughter. (We would note that while William's marriage with Sally Harris Rodes was barren of children, that William apparently had issue either before or apart from his marriage, and his widow had a number of children by her second husband Micajah Woods.) Are descendants of Sophie Shiplet eligible for Pamunkey Davenport membership? The Shiplets were a landed family in Albemarle. (5) We have not encountered the situation in Colonial and Post-Revolution Virginia, but it has surely occurred in the years since: namely the matter of an adoptee who was renamed or chose the Davenport name, and whose descendants have continued in that surname. Are these folk Pamunkey Davenports if they had been adopted by a Pamunkey? (6) Can a person be a Pamunkey Davenport by choice? We have our opinion relative to eligibility for the Pamunkey Clan, but what say you Pamunkeys? John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ
Thanks Cheryl, This isn't quite what I was looking for, but it used to be on this website. The old page had 6 generations of the descendents of Davis Davenport listed.. Also, the directory says that Doc's topic on the Pamunkey Davenports is on the website. The web site with Doc's "6" generations of the descendants of Davis Davenport has been "suspended" until further notice. Based on his latest research, it contained many errors that he didn't want propagated on the web. Presumably, we will publish a new page after we are sure that all of our information is correct. There's no good reason to publish bad information. I will shortly remove the statement in the Directory that says: "He served as compiler of the recently published "The Pamunkey Davenports of Colonial Virginia" (which can be found on this web site)." Hopefully, that will prevent future confusion. If you have specific questions regarding your Pamunkey heritage, please post them here on this list. I have been remiss in doing my genealogy due to other commitments. But today I tried to visit the old Pamunkey Davenport site and it is no longer there. Has it been moved or just discontinued?? Also, I am very interested in obtaining a copy of the Pamunkey CD when it becomes available. Do we have an estimated date as yet?? Carol T. Kirk Clarksville, TN
A new Movie making its way to theaters Nov 9th is called The New World. You can see the trailer to it here: http://www.thenewworldmovie.com/ The movie is about the Jamestown Settlement, John Smith and John Rolfe. How historically accurate it will be, I don't know. But it is rated for all audiences and may be worthy.

Skid: I, too, have continued to work on the Kennedys, concurrent with my Pamunkey Davenport research. Charles Kennedy, Jr., whatever his Revolutionary service was (I, too, believe that he served in the Virginia Continental Line), found the Widow Jarrett among the Pamunkey Davenports (families of Thomas D., Mary D. Gambill, and Dorothy D. Baker, all children of Martin, sr., of Hanover), in Western North Carolina before moving on South. Charles, Jr., apparently went directly to North Carolina after his Revolutionary service. As to Fields Kennedy, son of Charles, Jr., being the one who enlisted in the Regular Army during the War of 1812, the evidence indicates that it was Fields, brother of Charles, Jr., for the age 38 is a stated fact from the extracted enlistment record. A major finding, yet to be fully developed, is that fact that Joseph Kennedy, eldest son and heir-at-law of Davenport Kennedy, located in Charlottesville, Albemarle County, by 1792 and remained there until 1820, at least. He never lived on that 92+ acres he was deeded in Louisa County, but was closely allied, at least in the 1790s, with William and Jesse Davenport, sons of James Davenport, Sr., son of Martin, Sr., in Charlottesville. Joseph Kennedy has a high profile in Albemarle Court records of the 1790s as a juror (including being appointed jury foreman for several trials, including one where Thomas Jefferson was the defendant), a businessman litigant--suing and being sued, and as a jail guard. His activity level, except as a guard for felony charged prisoners, dropped rapidly after he ceased to be a freeholder, i.e., landowner in Louisa County, in 1797. Thereafter, he appeared consistently on the Albemarle Personal Property Tax List through 1820, gone thereafter--either dead, excused from taxation, or had moved away. At no time, 1792-1820, was Joseph assessed for more than a tithe-poll tax and a horse (rarely), indicating that he accumulated no taxable wealth over twenty-eight years. Court records indicate Joseph's Charlottesville associations were tight with William Davenport particularly, and Jesse Davenport, less so but nevertheless frequent, in the 1790s. He had no record associations with the Richard Davenport, Sr., who died the same year that Joseph appeared in Albemarle, nor with Richard, Sr.'s identified family, who were in St. Ann's Parish (southern Albemarle), while Charlottesville where William, Jesse, and Joseph were located was in Frederickville Parish (northern Albemarle). I still have at least twenty years of Albemarle Court records to research, but am in the middle of Marriage Bond research at the moment, so there is much concerning Joseph, eldest son of Davenport Kennedy, yet to be learned. When Joseph Kennedy disappeared from Albemarle tax records, he was in his middle 50s with most, if not all, of his life spent. Davenport research in Albemarle is being redone because the Pamunkey history there heretofore circulated does not agree with what the records indicate. William Davenport, son of James, Sr., went to Albemarle most likely because he was a millwright apprentice to Henry Gambill, Jr., a first cousin as well as an uncle, who was married to Catherine Jouett. (William's mother was Frances Jouett, elder sister of Catherine.) Henry's mother was Mary Davenport, eldest daughter of Martin, Sr. The Davenport-Jouett relationship badly needs review and an ironing out--it was not what has heretofore been portrayed. The fact that Joseph Kennedy was mixed up in Davenport-Jouett milieu (which was done in Albemarle by 1807) adds spice to the search--with the Davenport-Kennedy presence continuing in Charlottesville and the Richard Davenport, Sr., family active in the south of the County until 1820 and beyond. If we keep turning over rocks, we'll get some serendipity I'm sure--like stumbling across Joseph Kennedy in Albemarle. (I've also stumbled across him in Henrico County in 1782 while tracing down Martin Davenport, son of John, Sr., son of Martin, Sr., but that was the front end of Joseph's life, before Davenport Kennedy's death.) Folks, I have finally uploaded the core of what I hope will be an active site devoted to William and Elizabeth Syndor Andrew, my great, great, great-grandparents, and their descendants. They were a prolific bunch and I, with a great deal of assistance, have already located over 550 descendants. I hope that anyone who has information relating to these families not already presented will share that information with the rest of us. At present I've only got the genealogical information uploaded, but I hope to add photos, letters and other documents over time to more fully document our family history. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~longkin/LongKin.html Please feel free to comment on anything within the site as I make no claims to be any sort of graphic artist and I'd welcome any suggestions to improve it. ALL WHO HAVE E-MAILED ME BETWEEN APRIL 11 AND JULY 4 AND HAVE NOT RECEIVED AN ANSWER OR ACKNOWLEDGMENT: For some reason, AOL has lost or the web has eaten my incoming mail file for the period indicated. I received the messages, read them, and filed them for back burner attention, but when I tried to recover items, they were gone -- have everything before and since. It's taken me awhile to clear away the had-to-be-done stuff (we're big on flower beds this year, and I'm the gardener), plus the excitement engendered by new findings in Albemarle County which had and have me in hot pursuit, so I was tardy getting to the back burner items. When I did, the messages were gone. If you would resend such messages as were unanswered, I would appreciate, and will give the replies top priority. The volunteers from Georgia and Texas are especially welcome to re-up. John Scott Davenport Holmdel, NJ
