He graduated from Blue Mound High School in 1929, and entered Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration in 1933. While at Baker, he was active in varsity football and Zeta Chi Fraternity. Following graduation, he taught and coached at Vineland High School. On August 1, 1935, he purchased what was to become Daugherty's Grocery and Market, which was the same store where he had worked as a Baker University student. On August 26, 1935, he was united in marriage with his college sweetheart, Lucile Kramer, in the First Methodist Church in Eureka, Kansas, with the bride's father, the Reverend Eugene Kramer officiating. Their early years of married life were spent in Baldwin, where Allan became active in civic affairs. A son, Dennis, was born to Allan and Lucile in 1939. Allan served on the Board of Education, as chairman of the local Red Cross Chapter, and served as president of the Baldwin Rotary Club in 1950. He served as a member of the official board of The First Methodist Church for many years, and as Superintendent of the Sunday School for four years. He remained a supporting member of the First United Methodist Church in Baldwin until the time of his death.
