    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Daugherty Hoover Stiles McIntire Dougherty Bigler Scoggin Cox Padgett Clem Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XSR.2ACIB/1035 Message Board Post: My 3rd great-grandfather, John Daugherty (sometimes Dougherty), is found in the 1850 Hardin Co., KY Census in a household with what I'm sure were his father and step-mother, John Daugherty and Elizabeth. (I think John's real mother was named Elizabeth, too, but read on) Here is a rundown of that census 1850 Harding Co., KY Census, S.Dist. 2, P. 420 John Daugherty, age 63, born Georgia Elizabeth, age 62, born VA <-believe this is Elizabeth Hoover, 2nd wife, m'd in 1826) (I believe his 1st wife was Elizabeth McIntire, m'd Mar 9, 1802 in Hardin Co.) Mary A., age 19, b. KY <- I think this is John, Sr's daughter by 2nd wife, John Jr's half-sister John Daugherty, age 29 <-- John, Jr., my 3rd-great grandfather Elizabeth, age 28 <---- John, Jr.'s 1st wife James, age 3 Lucinda, age 2 William, age 1/12 <--William H., later lived & died in Cooke Co., Texas The elder John Daugherty couple and daughter, Mary A. were also found on p. 435a of same 1850 census. On that page, they are also David Stiles with wife Martha (this is Martha Daugherty, John Sr.'s daughter) and a son, John F. Stiles. In 1880, John Daugherty, Jr. has NEPHEW John F. Stiles in his household in Collin Co., Texas (see below). In 1860, John, Sr. and Elizabeth are nowhere to be found (yet). But John, Jr. is now with his 2nd wife, Lucinda Hoover, the one that I descend from) 1860 Census, Hardin Co., KY, p. 199. , Dist 2, Elizabeth Town Post Office John Daugherty, 37 (all b. KY) Lucinda, 32 <-this is Lucinda Hoover, daughter of Paulser Hoover and Mary Bigler James, 11 Lucinda, 9 William, 7 Charles, 6 Samuel, 2 Mary E., 7/12 (twins) Kate, 7/12 (my great-great grandmother will be born in 1861, Nancy Jane Daugherty) I CANNOT FIND ANY OF MY DAUGHERTYS in 1870. I DON'T KNOW IF THEY WERE IN TEXAS, KENTUCKY OR SOME POINT IN BETWEEN (although a letter from John's brother Jackson Daugherty written in 1872 makes references to John living in Texas by then) In 1880, my group is now in Texas . . . Lucinda (Hoover) has passed away 1880 Collin Co., Texas Census, p. 307, Prec No. 4, enumerated June 28, 1880, E.D. 208 (Sup Dist. No. 3) HH 79 John Dougherty, W, M, 58, WIDOWED, Farmer, b. KY, father b. GA, mother (left blank) William H., W, M, 29, Son, single, Farmer, b. KY, father b. KY, mother b. KY <----born of 1st wife, Elizabeth Mary E., W, F, 22, daughter, b. KY, father b. KY, mother b. KY <---born of Lucinda (my great-great grandmother) John F. Stiles, W, M, 32, Nephew, Farmer, b. KY, father b. NJ, mother b. KY By 1900, my 40 yr old great-great grandmother, Nancy Jane Daugherty is already a widow (Nancy Jane Scoggin) living in Cooke Co., Texas. Her older half-brother William H. Daugherty lives in the household, along with my great-grandmother, Grace D. Scoggin, at only age 1 (later Grace married James E. Cox). In 1910, William H. Daugherty is listed as head of household in Cooke Co., Texas census. Nancy is listed as HALF-SISTER. I have a copy of a wonderful letter written from Jackson Daugherty in 1872 from Clark Co., Arkansas addressed simply to "My Deare Brother". It was in my great-grandmother's belongings (Grace Scoggin). We can only presume it was written to John H. Daugherty (John, Jr.). It makes mention of a "stip mother", making it even more likely that the Elizabeth in the 1850 Census above (age 62) was John, Sr.'s second wife. On Jackson Daugherty . . . I'm almost certain that his first wife was Elizabeth Padgett, whom he married in KY on March 19, 1838. I also believe that his second wife was Elizabeth Clem, whom he married on Sep 20, 1863 in Clark Co., Arkansas. In his letter written in 1872 he is distraught that he just recently discovered that his first wife was alive, making him a (presumably hell-bound) bigamist. Okay, the questions about this family are numerous: 1. Where was the John Daugherty family in 1870? (Jackson Daugherty was in Clark Co., Arkansas) 2. What is the ancestry of the eldest couple in this tree: John Daugherty and Elizabeth McIntire. He was born about 1787 in Georgia. Don't know where or when she was born. 3. Where did Lucinda Hoover (Daugherty), John, Jr.'s wife, die and where is she buried. I believe it would be in Collin Co., Texas but have not been able to find her so far. 4. Who was John, Jr.'s first wife (Elizabeth)---what was her last name and where and when did she die? 5. What is the story on Jackson Daugherty? How could he have become so separated from his 1st wife that he believed her dead---is there a Civil War tragedy at work here? And where was this 1st wife in 1872 when Jackson wrote his letter. 6. Of all the bazillion Daughertys and Doughertys in Hardin Co., back before the 1870s---which ones am I related to and how? If I can be of any help to anyone researching these lines, I'll be more than happy to do so. Thanks and God bless, Greg Boyd Norman, OK
