Chief Boots was principal chief (Chuleoah) in 1790-91. Led the signing of a treaty with Jefferson. Could this be the 'Shoeboots" someone was looking for? Joyce Gaston Reece
Mary Lou The subject in this quote is the 1790 & 1791 meeting between the Cherokee and William Blount. It speaks of 42 chiefs signing a treaty document. "It did not take the Cherokees long to realize thy had let themselves be badly swindled. As a result, Bloody Fellow, Northward (Nontuaka), and four other Cherokee Cheifs arrived at Philadelphia on December 29 in the company of Indian agent Leonard Shaw, a young graduate of Princeton who had been assigned as the new US agent to the Cherokees; interpreter James Carey, who had been captured as a boy and had been raised to manhood by Chief Little Turkey; and Jane Dougherty, the white wife of one of the chiefs. *28 (reference/notes) *28-Pathkiller and other chiefs to Jefferson, January 24, 1808, Records of Cherokee Agency in Tennessee (M-208), NA.; Lowery to Meigs, February 8, 1808, Letters Received, Secretary of War, Unregistered Series (M-222), NA. Dear Tammy, My gggg-grandfather, John Dougherty, Came to the U.S. sometime around 1790, and settled first in Maryland. Sometime around 1804, John moved to Ohio, eventually settling in the Columbus (Franklin Co.), Ohio area around 1810. John came to the U.S. (Maryland) with his wife, Mary Morris Dougherty, who died at a young age after having three children. When he moved to Ohio, John then married Nancy Ann Gatton, and they had about 11 children, one of which was my ggg-grandfather, Benjamin Daugherty.
