Looking for info on my William Dougherty - family later changed the name to Daugherty. He was born KY 1799 and was married to Catherine Mullikin in Alton, IL 1837 and died in Alton in1850. Catherine was born in Hagerstown, MD in 1815.
A preson sent me the infromation that Cynthia Dougherty's probate is listed in the index cards and the date was 1874. Is there any one who will be where they could check this for me. We need the probate to see if it lists Henry's children. I will pay you if you can do this for me? This record is at the house of Wilma Davis. Have asked for such a record several times and only get the same ones over and over. I cannot pay for the same thing more than 3 times. Thanking you so very much Mary Lou

Searching for the parents of Spicy Jane Dougherty who census records say was born in Ind. abt 1812. She was related to George Washington Dougherty who was married to Mary Moore. George was born in 1838 in Orange Co. Ind. Was Henry and Cynthia their parents, were they brother and sister, can any one help?? THank You for past help and any you may offer in the future. Mary Lou
Lets all remember that the Daugherty's loved passing down names, in honor of fathers, brothers, uncles and then of course, sisters, mothers and aunts. So many children carried on names that had once been famous folks (George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Christopher Columbus to name a few) or someone else's name in the family. In my family everyone of my great Grandfathers neices and newphews named at least one child with a variation of my Great Grandfathers name - he was the favorite Uncle! A great honor, but VERY confusing and frustrating when doing the history. You have to watch and double check all the dates and data - and if you are using only the internet you MUST check everything at least twice. One of the best things you can do is have more than one source and to do true genealogy you have to be able to site the source and document it. It is a masterful jigsaw puzzle and you cannot saw the edges or force a fit. It has to come together on it's own. It took me ten years to find a connection to my Great Grandfather's family. And a couple of my sources kept telling me no there was no way, but I kept at it and eventually was able to prove beyond any doubt that it WAS the right person and that there was a connection to the source --- ! . : ) So my encouragement and advice to the list is: 1) don't beleive everything - bravo Joyce Gaston Reece! 2) don't give up - Bravo Mary Lou!!! 3) branch out and try different outlets --- especially if you are sending out the same message to the same list and getting no response or no positive response 4)try telephoning to the local library of the place you think they are from and ask for a look up 5) write good old fashioned letters - if you to speed up the response include a self addressed stamped envelope 6) try calling older relatives or friends of the family ---- PICK THEIR BRAINS!!!!!!!!!!!!! ask everyone the same quesitons you will get different answers as everyone views and remembers things differently but therein lies the truth and you can pick through the muck but the common factors. Remember libraries, historic societies, churches are great places especially in the East and south of the Mississippi, where most of our families orginated. There are people who are willing to do look-ups, some for small amounts of money, some because they enjoy it and others for larger amounts of money as it is their job and they are very good at this searching and finding answers. Most everyone pays some type of fee for the internet service - long distance isn't that much more expensive (make sure you don't have just a basic long distance plan on your local telephone bill or you will pay to much - with the competition there are some great long distance deals out there) and talking with folks is a great way to get answers to more than one question, and some questions you haven't even asked yet. Happy Searching. (PS I still have more road blocks than answers, but they at least change and I thought this might be encouraging to some one>)
Here Here Joyce!!!! A breath of fresh email! I wholeheartedly agree that the math and everything on the internet should be questioned, not just once but twice. My own Great Grandmother is listed on someone's list as my Great Grandfather's sister - not his wife (and still hasn't been corrected since it was pointed out and proven!) So check the math, check your source, question EVERYTHING. Thanks for your upfront reminder to all on the list.
