Personally, I say THANK YOU to the sender, for alerting me to a possible problem. For those who find these messages annoying, hit the delete button. Hi Folks, It's really not that simple. Those of us on email lists seem to stampede easily. It's annoying when someone believes one of the "sky is falling" hoax letters and sends it on to 25 of their closest friends. However, people tend to also send the hoax (and they're all hoaxes) on to all the *mailing lists* they're on. One misguided person, in effect, spams 2-3,000 people at a time. This can have a disasterous effect on the equipment which routes the messages, as all the messages to all the lists come in at the same time. If more than one person is sending the hoax to a bunch of lists, they can bring down the servers and routers. The last big hoax nearly brought down RootsWeb. Brian and Karen, the RootsWeb owners had to work constantly to keep the genuine mail flowing. They don't deserve the grief. A year ago, a spammer did bring down the Maiser lists, some of you might remember that; we were without genealogy lists for several weeks. Good intentions don't count. Here's the site to check the next time somebody yells that the sky is falling: http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html "Hoaxes described on this page: PKZ300, Irina, Good Times, Good Times Spoof, Deeyenda, Ghost PENPAL GREETINGS!, Make Money Fast, NaughtyRobot, AOL4FREE, Join the Crew, Death Ray, AOL V4.0 Cookie, A.I.D.S. Hoax, Internet Cleanup Day, Bill Gates Hoax, WIN A HOLIDAY" While you're there, read the page on chain letters - and don't send those on either. If you're going to pass something on, pass on the CIAC web site. Diane Hettrick dhettrick@earthlink.net

    1. Re: (Hoax-or-no-hoax e-mailis)
    2. Tony Darnell
    3. Betty, Let me ask you one question. Have you EVER received an email similar to the ones described in these "virus alerts"? Has anyone else on this mailing list received an email like this? I am a computer systems analyst, and I have worked in the computer industry for the past 14 years. I have worked on 12 different operating systems, and on computers all over North America. During my entire computer career, I have never encountered a virus. Now, as amazing as my career sounds <jk>, I have been using electronic mail (email) since 1989. I generally receive at least 150 email messages a day, and out of all of these messages, I have NEVER received an email similar to any of these virus alerts. In order for a virus to destroy information on your hard drive, the virus has to be executed, just like a program. A virus is software code, and software code can not automatically execute - the user has to execute it. So, if you receive an email that is tainted with a virus, UNLESS you open up the attachment that was sent with the email, nothing can happen to you. An email alone can not do anything to your computer. The only way a virus can attack, is if the user opens the attachment, and executes the virus. Therefore, these warnings are unnecessary. Again, if you follow the simple rule of not opening anything from anyone you don't know, you precious data will survive. Thanks, Tony At 06:36 PM 3/18/98 -0500, Bjc1101613 wrote: >Tony, > I admit the "viruses are coming" messages can be annoying, but I'd rather >be alerted of a possible problem rather than be caught unawares. 2. Lobomoon2
    3. Does anyone out there have the maiden name of James Darnell's wives. James was born in MD (although some records show VA) in 1765. Dr. Smith's book says his wife's name was Eveline, but on a tombstone found next to James' it says, Mary, wife of James Darnell. We cannot figure out whether he actually had two wives or whether Dr. Smith got the name wrong. I have been trying to figure out this puzzle for 20 years and I hope someone will have the information for me. Thanks, Lois in Kansas City

    3. Everyone - Please stop sending these so called virus warnings to the list server. 99% of the time these warnings are bogus Also, you will probably never, ever receive any of these types of emails with so called dangerous consequences attached. If you just follow the simple rule of not opening any email from any source that you don't recognize, we can quit having these virus warnings fill up our email in box. 2. Dawn D. Shelton
    3. Is anyone familiar with the book The DARNALL, DARNELL FAMILY, Volume II by Dr. H.C. Smith, updated and compiled by Avlyn Dodd Conley? If so, what is your opinion of it, and is it available in any way? A "cousin" of mine has a copy of it, but I would like my own. Also, what are the differences between it and Volume I? Thanks for any info you might have on this subject.

    3. I need information on Fendal B. DARNOLD, b.1805SC d.unk. He appears on the 1830 census for Pickens Co. SC. between the entries for Benton FREEMAN and Cannon STEPHENS. In the 1840 Pickens Co census his neighbors are Pearson MAYFIELD and Coleman SMITH. In 1850, 1860, and 1870, he appears in the Buncombe Co NC census as follows: [1850] 1323. DORNAL, F. B. 46 SC Sarah 35 William E. 9 James C. 7 [1860] 73.DARNOLD, F.B. 55 SC Sarah 44 SC Anderson 24 William 18 James 16 SC 74. Howard, Lucy 71 SC Margaret 28 Nancy 11 Ellen 8 Baylis 6 [1870] 41. 2. Diane Hettrick
    3. Hi Awiusdi, I took this question to my neighborhood list (PSRoots) because there are a *bunch* of experienced genealogists on the list. They said - absolutely legit and very often quite valuable. Yates advertises in the Genealogical Helper. He collects family group sheets from people like us and then groups them by surname and resells them. It's the same thing we can now do more efficiently, perhaps, on the net, but he's been doing it for years. The charge is because of the overhead for postage, advertising, etc. He actually has a shop that one of my cyberbuddies had visited. So yes, it would be valuable to get the Darnell info he has collected.
