    3. Ok, Heres the deal.... The Darnell Experiment is a place for you to share. Family Stories, Personal Thoughts,Photographs, Personal Likes and Dislikes and anything to do with the personal side of your family. Lets get to know each other alittle bit. Even if our lines are different we are all still family. It is not for the genealogy end of The Darnell list. Instead of sending out 200 + personal invites, You will recieve a group invitation. Dont respond to the invite. But dont delete it.... It will be important Wait until you hear from me again with further instructions. This place will give you a place to create a homepage for this project. For those of you who say you are computer illiterate, no problem, there is a very easy editor that does all the work for you. All you have to do is choose and type.... But dont do anything yet. We will all share the same password but we have to remember what the page name is of the page we create and access no other pages that are on the server. If anyone abuses this I will delete the membership entirely. You will recieve an invitation and also an update when I change the user name and password. Just put those away until I let you know to delete them. But dont respond and never give out the username or password. Set apart and Blessed.....I can do all things though Christ who strengthens me. 3. THis came off another list I am on. As the director of a LDS Family History Center, I have received a notice from Salt Lake LDS FHL, announcing the Beta testing of Family Search on line. It is not yet up, a problem with a piece of equipment, but will be starting sometimes this month and will be up only a few weeks as a test run. If there is not a lot of interest it will be taken off and not put back on. So spread the word and keep trying to get through. When it comes on line the URL will be: http://www.familysearch.org I have not been told exactly what will be available but know at least the Ancestral File and Family History Library Catalog will be included. Family Search is the name of the program we have on CDs in all LDS FHCs. Some public libraries also have this program. FS includes the IGI, Ancestral File, Family History Library Catalog, Social Security Death Records, Koran and Vietnam war death records, and Scottish Church Records. For those of you not familiar with the various searches, the IGI is the International Genealogical Index. It includes, in alphabetical order, all of the names that have been sent to the Temples to have ordinances performed in their name. Names in the IGI are usually submitted by members, but not always. Non-members also submit their family names to get them into the IGI. Some of the marriages may have been part of extraction programs. The names were taken from courthouse records and checked and rechecked by several volunteers before being accepted as correct. Most people do try to send in accurate information but there are many mistakes. My advice is, always check the original source. Use the IGI to find where people with your surname would have lived and order the census and court records from that area. Ancestral File is Gedcoms of group and pedigree sheets sent in by members and non-members. The name and address of the submitter is included and hopefully will allow you to contact others working on your line. If the address is out of date sometimes a letter to the Membership dept. in Salt Lake will get you a correct address if the person was a member of the LDS church. Once again, the material is only as good as the research that went into it and some of it is pretty bad. Check it out before you 'adopt' it. If you find a mistake on Ancestral File, you can send in your corrections, along with your sources of proof, and it will be noted in the next update. The first submitter does not have to provide proof, but you do, if you are making a correction. You can add additions to a file, or submit a new file. You do not have to be a member to submit material. The Family History Library Catalog is a listing of every book, film and fiche available at the Salt Lake City LDS Family History Library. This allows us to find what is available for each locality, world-wide. It includes the FHL call numbers and a description of what is included in the film/fiche or book. The material from the books and film/fiche will not be on line. That is not something they can do, at this time. Hopefully it will be a possibility some time in the distant future. The film and fiche will still have to be ordered through FHC. Microfilm and microfiche are the property of the FHL and are sent into the care of the LDS FHC director and must remain under her/his care until returned. For this reason they are never allowed to be taken from the LDS FHC. Almost all of the microfilm and microfiche at the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City can be ordered into any LDS FHL, anywhere in the world, but there are a few exceptions. Copyright laws prevent them from using material without the written consent of the owner. Some of the film and fiche where filmed by companies other than the LDS Church and permission to circulate these film to LDS FHCs has been denied. There will be a notice included in the description, saying it can not be circulated. Many of the SC microfilm where made by a company who has refused permission to allow the film to be circulated, but there are many microfilm available for SC, some covering the same material that is on the restricted film. The LDS FHL is a non-profit organization, and that is why it still cost only 15 cents a sheet for a microfiche, $3.25 plus tax to rent a microfilm for a month [may be more in other countries] and the SourceGuide and other home use programs are sold at such a reasonable price. We aren't allowed to make a profit, even in the FHCs. The books that are listed are not loaned out but can sometimes be obtained through an Inter-library loan through your public library. You can request copies of pages and if a book is indexed, by ordering the index you can see if your people would have been listed. In cases where the copyright has expired the book may have been filmed or can be filmed upon request. Never hurts to ask. ______________________________ Set apart and Blessed.....I can do all things though Christ who strengthens me. 1. FW: more re LDS online
    2. Awiusdi Darnel
    3. Subject: more re LDS online Genealogy bounty coming to Web Mormons set to bring part of vast collection of records online By Margie Wylie NEWHOUSE NEWS SERVICE - Much to the delight of genealogists, the Mormons are preparing to make some of their vast holdings of family records available on the World Wide Web for the first time next month, if not sooner. THE NEW WEB SITE (www.familysearch.org) won't officially launch until mid-April, but it is expected to "go live" for testing any day now. Church officials originally planned to leave the site open to all during the test period. But for fear of being swamped, they now may limit access to official testers with assigned passwords. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints collects genealogical records of all kinds because the Mormons believe it is important to perform religious rites on behalf of dead ancestors. It has the world's largest collection of such data. Genealogy is one of the most popular subjects on the Internet. As more information goes online, it seems to create more genealogists. About 100 million Americans have at least dabbled in it, and 19 million actively research their family history, according to a 1995 Maritz Marketing Research study for American Demographics magazine. Rootsweb (www.rootsweb.org) has more than 200,000 subscribers to 3,000 e-mail lists about genealogy. The number of subscribers is growing rapidly, according to John V. Wylie, a professional genealogist from Grand Prairie, Texas. Wylie is a co-founder of GENTECH (www.gentech.org), a non-profit society to help genealogists use technology. Mormon Church officials are vague about what Web surfers can expect to find on their new site, but that hasn't dampened genealogists' enthusiasm. "I think the reaction is probably going to be unanimously, 'Wow! It's about time!"' said Marthe Arends, editor of the newsletter Pioneers Online (www.eskimo.com/~mnarends), based in Bellevue, Wash. The newsletter helps genealogists use the Internet. With 2 billion rolls of microfilm, 700,000 microfiches and 280,000 books, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (www.lds.org) is the ultimate source for many genealogists. Anyone can use the materials at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City free of charge. They may also borrow materials for a small handling fee at any one of the library's 3,200 branches. A tiny, but important portion of that is available by computer. In 1978, the church began computerizing some of its records in a program dubbed FamilySearch. The program is currently only offered at libraries and branch libraries. The church won't sell FamilySearch to individuals because it can't afford to offer everyone support for DOS, the older operating system the program requires. That makes it the perfect candidate for putting on the Web. One of the first FamilySearch databases expected to be offered on line is Ancestral File. The simple database lets surfers type in names and find family trees compiled by other researchers, mostly amateurs. "As useful as that can be, the information is only as good as the person who submitted it," said Arends. "I'd personaly like to see more primary sources being put online." The International Genealogical Index, also part of FamilySearch, lets researchers search millions of marriage, death and birth records taken from records in the United States and abroad. The church won't say if the index will be offered on the Web site. Even with thousands of church volunteers typing the information from original records into computers, "We can digitize only a tiny fraction of what we capture each year," said David Rencher, manager of public outreach for the Family History Department of the Mormon Church. Still, the output is impressive. Over the past year, the church not only updated FamilySearch, but also released five sets of CD-ROMs reaching back 450 years and ranging from Australian Vital Records to the 1851 British Census. In 1999, it will release the full 1880 U.S. Census and the 1881 British Census, both on CD-ROM. Church volunteers are also working on a 17 million-person database of Ellis Island immigrants that will be released on CD-ROM by the church, posted online by the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation (www.ellisisland.org) and made available at the new American Family Immigrant History Center due to open late next year on Ellis Island. "There's no doubt the interest in genealogy is very high out there," said Peg Zitko, director of public affairs for the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation. "Our Web site has gotten 67 million hits in 14 months, and we get hundreds of e-mails every week. Ninety percent of them are looking for genealogy records." "Certainly computerization and the Net have made it easier to do genealogy," said Rencher. "You get on a browser and there's a link to a genealogy site and you just go with it and before you know it, you're up all night searching." Raymond Stallcup knows just what Rencher means. More at home driving the West Texas desert in his pickup truck than sitting in a library, this "old oil hand" from Monahans, Texas, figures he has logged hundreds of hours researching his family name on the Internet over the last year. "I don't know that I would have done any of it if I'd had to look it up in the library," he said. Still, the Net has its drawbacks. "The bad information gets around as fast as the good," Stallcup said. "Everything you look at ain't necessarily true." The pros couldn't agree more. Many bemoan the messes created by sloppy family trees and bad research posted and reposted on the Web. But some figure that the only antidote to all the bad information floating out there is good information, and lots of it. "As important sources become easier to find and easier to access, we see better work by more people," said Wylie. "That is the payoff for opening the (Mormon) databases to the Internet." 3. I am quite disapointed to say I have had no entries for the March Newsletters for our Fmaily. But I know April will be chocked full of stuff I have confidence in you ) Another issue that is just on the edge of disapointing me is the willingness to support one another. Some of you wanted state pages, we done that. But there are very few of you who are participating. Some of you wanted a Family association, we done that too. I have had very little cooperation. This saddens me. I am not going to give up. One way or the other I think we can pull together as a family unit and participate. I do realize that you have other lines to research and I appreciate that, So I will hang on and when your ready I know you will jump in with both feet. I hope more of you will sign the Family Query books that are posted on our Websites. Thats all for now. Have a great day and Happy hunting to all. 3. Hi all, Did a little snooping and got a different URL for the LDS family search. Go to this URL to find information on what is new at the LDS FHC. It lists information on the family search, plus other records that are available online there. According to what I have been reading, it will be available for 3 weeks on a trial basis. Check it out! http://www.LDS.org/en/2_Whats_New/Whats_New.html Set apart and Blessed.....I can do all things though Christ who strengthens me. Phil 4:13 Awiusdi

Thought it might help if I pass it along.... Shirley *Message: I just returned from a meeting at the Family History Center where I volunteer. I now have the true scoop on the LDS records that will be available online. First of all there are several different types of records that are kept at all Family History Centers. There is never a charge for use of any of this information (nominal fees for printouts). The main files are the Ancestral File, the International Genealogical Index, and the Family History Library Catalogue. The Ancestral file is basically no different than the disks sold by family tree maker containing ancestor charts. The info on these charts can be submitted by anyone whither or not they are a member of the church. The International Genealogical Index information can only be submitted by members. It consists of Individual data that lists birthdates, place of birth and parents. There is a marriage index that gives date and place of marriage. And lastly a parent index which lists all children in a particular family. The info is obviously only as good as the person who submitted it to the file. We tell people to use the data as a starting point only and NOT to take it as the absolute proof. When anything is submitted to ancestral file, you can automatically find out who submitted it by hitting a source key. The persons name and address will be shown. The same is not true for the IGI. You need to order the microfilm in order to find out who the submitter was. The church is currently working very hard at extracting as much information as possible from original records. It is an ongoing process that is checked and double checked for accuracy. As the data becomes available it is distributed to the libraries, once again at no charge to patrons. Neither of these files are going to be released online, at least not at this time. > What is going to be released is the Family History Library Catalogue. It will be the most current version, more current than any library now has in it's possession. Basically the FHLC is a complete listing of every record in the possession of the Mormon libraries located anywhere in the world. You can search these records several ways. Locality, surname, film/fiche number/ and author. By finding out what is available you can then decide whether you might like to order the kinformation. Not everything is available for order. Many living people do not allow their books to be microfilmed. However, a library in your area may have the book listed. You can find that out through the catalogue. I have utilized this catalogue extensively throughout the years. I can save a lot of money if I discover that a film I am interested in ordering is in a nearby FHC. > > Now then, just when will it go online?? Good question. We were told "sometime in March." So it could be online as early as tomorrow, but maybe not. Don't be discouraged if it is not there tomorrow, just check back again. It is going to be online for about a month to see how it works. I have no idea what the plans are for future release. > > Anyway, you now have the facts straight from the top as I was told them at our meeting. The address will be Familysearch.org Hope this helps,

    1. Family Associations
    2. Awiusdi Darnel
    3. I want to clear up something before anyone else asks or emails me about the Family Associations and The Rootsweb lists. As most of you know by now I have started The Family Association for the surnames that I host for Rootsweb. The Family Associations are not in anyway connected to This Rootsweb genealogy list. Just because you are a member of this mailing list doesnt mean you are a member of The Family Association. For the record any official Family Association that I have seen or belong to myself, all have Constitutions and Bylaws, All have membership dues to help ofset the cost. If you are interested in joining the Family Associations you need to send an email to chiefoftjs@hotmail.com If you want to volunteer on the board of the Family Associations you need to send an email to Awaneta.@mailexcite.com Thank you. 1. The Travelling Church
    2. Diane Hettrick
    3. Hi - This is from Bill Davis on VA-Roots. I have his permission to repost to DARNELL. Bill says he has been on this list at various times as his great grandmother was a Darneille and his mother's name, Alice Inda Craig, is in the H.C. Smith book. If you have questions or comments for Bill PLEASE DON'T HIT THE REPLY BUTTON but write to Bill at <wmadavis@kih.net> There are at least two DARNELLs on this list. Diane Hettrick dhettrick@earthlink.net -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Bill writes: I received an inquiry from someone interested in locating a list of members of "The Travelling Church" when it was in Virginia. I replied that it probably is a misnomer to think of the Travelling Church as a particular church. What's called the "The Travelling Church" was a caravan of 600 - some souls who were led by Rev. Lewis Craig into frontier Kentucky in 1781. Certainly a good portion of the caravan came out of Craig's congregation, hence the name Travelling Church, but I'm sure many of the others that came were from some of the surrounding churches, their relations, and probably anyone else that wanted to travel into frontier Kentucky in relative safety. In his book FREDERICKSBURG BAPTIST CHURCH [1959], Rev. Oscar Darter quotes two lists from the records of the Baptist minister Morgan Edwards, a contemporary of the preaching Craig brothers. Darter quotes Edwards as saying the Upper Spotsylvania Baptist Church consists of two branches; one near where is a house 40 by 24 built in 1769 on land given by Lewis Craig; the other near Fredericksburg where is also a meeting house. The gospel was at first preached here by Rev. David Thomas, then by Samuel Harris and others. Converts to this ministry were: Lewis Craig Joseph Craig and wife John Craig and wife John Saunders and wife Joseph Allen and wife, son and two daughters Andrew Hampton and wife Charles Robins and wife John Martin and wife John Haden and wife James Gordan William Cave and wife John Bledsoe John Hyat and wife Phil. Conner and wife Benj. Robertson James True James Haden Reuben Young John Price and wife Joice Falkoner Ann Cavender Richard Cavenaugh Ann Neal ______ Robison Christopher Singleton Thos. Heath and daughter Jennings McDonald James Evans Elijah Howell Lucy Martin, Senr. and Jr. Frances Darnel Mrs. Webster Bartholomew Curtis (deaf and dumb man) 5 negroes, men and women a total of 25. Darter then quotes Edwards as giving a list of 25 persons, who were Nov. 20 1767 constituted into a church by James Reed, Dutton Lane and others. Darter says these are the charter members of the upper branch of the Upper Spotsylvania Church: Lewis Craig * John Waller James Chiles John Saunders * Joseph Craig and wife * Elijah Craig Olden Wisdom William Beckham Joseph Spencer James Crawford Irene Saunders Mary Darnel Mary Brock and daughter Mary Wigglesworth Sarah Crawford Bartholomew Curtis * Nicholas Darnel Martin Wisdom Rachel Allen Robert Huddlestone (a negro) Thomas Martin David Thompson [ * mark names on both lists] Rev. Darter notes that this is a list of only 24 persons, and suggests that a wife of John Saunders could be the missing 25th person. Darter states that it is uncertain if any of these were members of the other branch of the Upper Spotsylvania Church, meaning the one near Fredericksburg. So apparently both of these lists are of members of the church located 20 miles southwest of Fredericksburg, now known as "Craig's Church." The present Craig's Church is located in the small town of Paytes, Virginia. A granite monument marks the original location out in the countryside. Darter also quotes Edwards as saying the Upper Spotsylvania was a "Remarkable-Mother Church, Louisa, Orange, and Lower Spotsylvania being it's offspring." The Lower Spotsylvania Church "consists of four branches; one near where is a meeting house, 32 feet by 28, built in 1768 on land given by James Wigglesworth, the other in Caroline; the third in Essex and the fourth in Middlesex. The families about [meaning in the neigborhood of Lower Spotsylvania Church, later known as the Waller Church], whereof 216 persons are baptized and in communication here." The bracketed part is in Darter's text. I don't know if any lists of members of these other churches are available. I suspect that since Darter doesn't mention them, they are not available. In his book THE TRAVELLING CHURCH, George W. Ranck listed these families as being part of the Travelling Church caravan: ALLEN ASHER BARROW BLEDSOE BOWMAN BURBRIDGE BUCKNER CARR CAVE, William CRAIG, Toliver & wife CRAIG, Lewis CRAIG, Joseph CREATH CURD DUDLEY DUPUY DARNABY DEDMAN DUDLEY DUPUY EASTIN ELLIS, William & family of 5 ELLY GARRARD GOODLOE HART HICKMAN HICKERSON HUNT MARSHALL MARTIN MITCHUM MOORE MORTON MORRIS NOEL PARRISH, Timothy PARRISH, James PAYNE PITMAN PRESTON PRICE RAMSEY ROBINSON & WIFE RUCKER SANDERS SHACKELFORD SHIPP SHOTWELL SINGLETON SMITH STUART THOMPSON TODD WALTON WARE WALLER WATKINS WOOLFOLK WOOLRIDGE YOUNG I don't know where Ranck got this list or how he compiled it. I believe that my ancestor Benjamin Craig was part of the caravan because it was specifically mentioned in an obituary of his son, George Craig, in 1833. I suspect Jeremiah Craig came at that time also. Capt. John Craig and Joice Craig Faulconer were already in Kentucky before the Travelling Church, and Rev. Elijah Craig came to Kentucky a few years afterwards. I've always believed that both Taliferro Craig Sr. and Toliver Craig Jr. were part of it. Surely there were also numerous slaves, including a slave of Rev. Joseph Craig known as Peter Durett or "Captain," who became the first Black Baptist minister in Kentucky.
