Hello michael: yes i will write. i do not write these things to solicit sympathy or such. it is my hope that my memories may trigger something in someone else with ties to that area; or to my family that can lead to them to share any thing they recall that may be the clues my siblings and i seek to help us solve some of these family mysteries. The names of many of the things I hear posted here are vaguely familiar from my childhood. Danville Crossing, Stewart co, Land Between The lakes..I recall my dad & his kin speaking of these places. I am told there are many small private cemetaries located on both the Tenn. & Ky. state sides of land Between the lakes. I believe my grandfather to be probably buried in one of them. As a small child; i recall a particular summer visit there. we were at my dad's Aunt Ida's home & the home of his cousin, Monico. I VIVIDLY RECALL standing on monico's porch as she gave my dad directions to locate the family cemetary where grandpa martis/Mardis was buried. It stands out for me because after receiving the directions; when we said goodbye, it was the first time in my life i ever saw my dad cry. It seemed to be we drove for a short distance, then got out and walked & walked. I recall being in a densely wooded area when we stepped off the road/pathway to enter the Cemetary. I recall my dad saying; " THIS IS YOUR GRANDPA MARTIS. THESE ARE HIS PEOPLE;... OUR KIN TINA TONA"*(MY KNICK NAME). (The two of my siblings that were on that trip with us were being boys, happily romping through the woods, chasing squirrels or such; so didn't get to hear this conversation.) I recall seeing several old fashioned headstones, and remember my dad pointing out his father's grave. It was a long one, Dad said grandpa was tall. it was marked at the head & foot only by rosebushes. I was only 9 or 10; the rest is vague flashes in my memory. Dad wanted to return the following summer to erect the headstone. that never occured because the following April in 1971; he received a phone call from his cousin Monico; that his Aunt Ida; (monico's mother); had passed away. Dad immediately left our home in Michigan to attend the funeral in Benton;Murray area of Kentucky. Dad never made it to the funeral. 15 miles outside of Benton, Dad was hit& killed instantly by a drunk driver. you can just imagine how this rocked a family to loose two of it's kin two days apart. Ida mae was one of only three people we were aware of that knew how to locate the cemetary. The other two were my father; and his cousin, Monico. Monico was so devistated by the loss of her mother & favorite cousin; my dad; she rarely spoke of it. (One of my brothers went down home several yrs. after this tragic loss & she still was unable to speak of it.) This past May; after many years of faithful service; Monico was called home. When i went down home for her funeral; none of the family i spoke too had any idea of where this cemetary could be located. so now here i am hoping to learn something of my family & their lives down there to :#1 leave a record of my family's proud heritage for my children, #2 to find my Grandfather's grave & see that a stone is erected. Blessings to all........... TWANA >From: [email protected] (Michael Brown) >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [DC] "old " Stewart Co Hist. Soc.
