I believe it was still very rural back then, with lots of poor people, and middle class. I know my Wallace's must have had some Money around the Civil War, as that Picture of Axium Green Wallace that Gene Wallace posted on the Stewart County website, shows everyone well dressed, and wearing SHOES. Looks like Axium was pretty well off. About the slaves, well I know that Ethelred Wallace had some, because he was parting them out in his Will. Funny story...I was 16 and visiting my Grandparents when they were living in Trigg County. There was a few cemeteries down the road, and I decided to check it out. So im looking through this cemetery, and I noticed there was a slave cemetery, right over the fence next to me, in a cow pasture. The cows looked pretty docile so I hopped the fence for a quick look (hey I was a teen, what's trespassing LMAO). So I was absorbed in dates and what not and all of a sudden I heard a loud snort behind me. I turned around and LO and BEHOLD A GIGANTIC BLACK BULL was about 10 feet away from me, tail sticking straight up in the air and and boy he had some big horns. Naturally I was wearing a red Jumpsuit. He Charged. I dove through the fence and ran ran ran. Taught me a lesson, always ask for permission before you go snooping!!! much love to everyone Erika
