Poor to middle class; Middle Class?< Last year I sat in on a seminar given by a history professor who had made a study of slave culture. One thing I remember was this- "If you were a slave you were most likely to be on a big plantation with hundreds of slaves." "If you were a slave owner you were most likely lower middle class and owned only one or two slaves." Put another way a lot of people had a few slaves but a few extremely wealthy people owned a lot of slaves. He was speaking about the south as a whole but I'd guess there weren't many very large plantations in the Danville area. Certainly no sugar cane, rice and probably no big cotton plantations. Hope this helps HarryB
