    1. Re: COLLIER or DOTY
    2. Dr. R. E. Markin
    3. The name COLLIER is one of many that arose from the individual's profession, like Wheeler, Smith, Hooper, Farmer, Wright, etc .... A 'collier' was a miner, specifically a COAL MINER. Such rosters as existed at the time might list a name as 'John, a collier' or in more streamlined fashion 'John---Collier'. Later translations of this would assume Collier to be the last name and the surname was born. I was teaching a group of 2nd graders about name origins once and, as usual, they come up with a question I couldn't answer. We'd just covered this part, about names arising from one's profession, when a little hand went up and a sweet little girl who obviously had been exposed to American history asked, "Dr. Markin, what did John Hancock's family do for a living?" Til next time. DocM -----Original Message----- From: David L.
