Could I also get a copy of the map Thanks Sue
Hey Folks, Anybody learn anything from the map...???????? If you did, we'd like to hear....otherwise, I brought it to you for nothing..... and that's not a good use of my time.....agreed ????? Dave
Hi Dave, Yes I located some of the Odom's, Robins, McDaniel, Fielder, Richardson and Christopher's, all are on my Christopher tree. With the stories of the " Old Bloody 23rd" the map helps, however it does not show the hills and valleys and where all the stills were located. Thanks a bunch. Wil.

Hi Wil... Glad the map was useful for you....thank Larry Perry...the map is his work.... As to the 'stills', I haven't a clue...except one....Hurley Dortchs'....a 'bit' on that later... If I were a JOURNALIST (that you Chris ??), I would search-out the ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearm) records under the 'Freedom of Information' Act (since they have long been 'declassified' for this timeframe), and start to look at the 'original records' for who did 'what-to-whom' back then. Might 'tell' you mainy things that the 'Locals' don't want to talk about in their past.....just a thought from Uncle Dave here.... Hurley Dortch....Wacko Supreme....son of Issac Dortch (1850-1938) and Sarah Angelyn Cooper (1856-1943 dau. of Charles Williamson Cooper and Mary Moss) married (1st---Stella B. Gray ((1899-1934 dau. of John C. Gray and Martha Angeline McDaniels)), 2nd. -- Katherine Lipps in 1944) and had by Stella...Willene, Mildred & Gladass.....The Taliban has nothing on Gladys where religious fanatism and hypocrisy are concerned......but, I divert...(you know these families, I'm sure....along with Darlene Christopher....she fits in here also). As told by Hurley's daughter and grand-daughter........ Once Stella died......Hurley never got over her death....and went to doing what he did best...Moonshine....never worked an honest job again in his days, Deb says, after Stella died.....supplied Camden, Henry Co., and over into the 'old Gray' homestead in Stewart Co. (sans...David Gray and the Bradford clan of Paris Landing), and we can't forget Ole Preacher Gray of the Mt. Zion Church....James Monroe (John C.'s daddy)....can we??. Don't know for sure...just 2nd-hand family tales......out of the mouth-of-babes come many things...... Look at the Map for Hurley's place.....if you've been in the area, you know the terrain (and I'm SURE you have). You can get a good idea of where the 'stills' were located and who 'fired' them. As an aside.....there are some records of the Camden mercantile stores who 'supplied' sugar, copper tube, etc. to local folks. Interesting to read once you find them (and they are not easy to find)....maybe, they would tell WHO might have been making some illegal alcohol at the time ?? Don't know....just a thought....maybe I might look into these records at the Benton County Historical Society if I were a journalist and wanted to write a story on the period. Dave
