Jan, Your composition left a lump in my throat, since I'm still grieving over the loss of our homeplace for 85 years. It was a large two story 7 bedroom house, situated on half a block with a manicured lawn and bordered with large maple trees. Every nook and cranny of the house ( and attic) held memories and secrets for me, growing up with four sisters and three brothers. Thirty years ago, after both of our parents had died, we agreed to allow a brother to continue living in the house. When he decided it was too much for him to keep up, and moved to an apartment, a sister and her husband retired, and moved in; so we have had access to the house for all these years, and continued to have our family reunions. Now there are only four sisters left, each living in a different state, and all getting along in years. The next generation ( our neices and nephews ) who change houses as often as changing clothes, cannot understand our emotional attachment to " that big old house". They just don't live in a house long enough to get sentimental about it !! To sum it up, I live in CA and the homeplace is in MO, but I will NOT go home again. I prefer to think of it as it was when I was there two years ago, and could walk right in and make myself at home. ---------- > Go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnstewar/histsoc3.htm to learn more about > purchasing or adding your family history to the new Stewart Co.
