    3. How far back do you want to take this? I grew up in a small town in the midwest, where everyone knew each other. All we had to do was tell "central" the name of the person we were calling. No conversation was private, because everyone on the line listened in. Soon, everyone in town knew of any sickness, accidents, deaths, births, etc and responded accordingly with appropriate aid. Although I prefer the conveniences we now enjoy, the community spirit is sadly missing. ---------- > My mother was a telephone operator for Bell when they wore those big old head > sets and plugged you in.
