    3. I have stuff to transcribe, Jan. Remind me and my poor memory, of all the counties involved here (I know Stewart) and I will see what I can do. Also, to whom should these transcription be sent to? You? Dave? Thanks, Debbie C. Families are like fudge . . . mostly sweet, with a few nuts. -----Original Message----- From: j <unicorn@sun-spot.com> To: DanvilleCrossing-L@rootsweb.com <DanvilleCrossing-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, January 22, 2002 7:40 PM Subject: Lighting fires It is good to see this list moving again...its purpose is absolutely one that has to be....and that vision was seen a long long time ago by Dan and Dave, long time before most of us ever showed up on the web. It has to do with "crossings" all right...originally the crossing paths of ancestors, and how we could lose them in one place and have them turn up in another...the reason why all the county lists need to work with this one. But it grew into something else...crossing...of all of us, our paths crossing and re-crossing, and sometimes crossing bridges. We are about to cross a bridge folks, a BIG bridge...a fire has been lighted. The dream of long ago has had an ember catch a breath of new air....and when it did, it lit up a bridge we hadn't been looking for. We are about to embark on a dream here....folks? Who wants to be part of the dream? Hmmm? Who wants to be sure that anyone, ANYone needing records in this area...finds them, immediately, where ever they are in the world? Well do you want to just use them and be the amen corner? Or do you want to help provide them? Waiting here...cause this is going to take a lot of folks. We want to transcribe, anything, everything, all that will make it all available...who is willing to bite the bait and start making this happen? jan ==== DanvilleCrossing Mailing List ==== Okay.... so I don't descend from anyone...... Now What ????

    3. The Appomattox Paroles.. These are the men that were present at the time Lee and his Army of N. Virginia, surrendered to Grant at Appamatox Court House* . They were paroled and allowed to leave with their personal horses. April 9-15, 1865 * Note, I am not a whiz kid... but until THIS past year I thought APPAMATOX COURT HOUSE was a building in APPAMATOX.. Not... it is the name of the town.. there also was a town named APPAMATOX... How bout that?! If I have no takers I will drag out another resourse....

    3. Jean, You're right the about the 2 different Marthas.....I wasn't attempting to imply that they were the same...she diffently is not of the John & Rachel Pierce line..... What I was trying to point-out is that her descendants later inter-married with descendants of the John & Rachel line and was trying to remember thru which of my families it occurred....and....that I believed it was thru the McDaniel line of Martha Angeline McDaniel (I am searching for my notes of her maternal lines for the connection)...... Will continue to look for my notes..... Dave At 01======:29 AM 1/23/02 -0500, GJCloke1@cs.com wrote: >Dallas & Dave, > >We corresponded briefly about this a couple of years ago. 1. Re: Martha Angeline Pierce
    2. Dallas & Dave, We corresponded briefly about this a couple of years ago. I haven't found anything new since then. I've looked into that line and the Martha that is the daughter of the John & Rachel Pierce is somewhere between 10 & 18 years too old to be my Martha. According to the Benton Co., TN book John & Rachel's Martha was born Feb. 23, 1822. According to the 1870 Census my Martha was 38 years old, on the 1880 Census she was 40 years old, and something else that suggested she was b. 1839 (can't put my fingers on it right now). That would make her birth date either 1832 or 1839/1840. Taking into account her children's birth years (1862 to 1879), I believe the 1839/40 date is more accurate. The information I have regarding her father being named Augustus/Augustine b. 1798 NC, came from a fellow Bethany researcher, but I don't know where he got it and I haven't been able to find it. He also had the names of the siblings and a second marriage to Middey Thompson on February 25, 1856 in Henry Co. I have found a record of an Augustus Pierce buried in the Barbee Cemetery in Henry Co., and Martha married Charles in Henry Co. At the moment I have accepted this line, but I would really like to have some better documentation. I have reread all the old posts to this list and Benton Co. that I had printed out a couple of years ago on the Pierce line. The only idea I have about how Augustus and family fit into the other Pierce lines are that he is possibly a cousin or brother to John (m. Rachel Ross) and or Hiram (m. Kizziah Greer). Their birthdates are close enough for them to be siblings. Another thought occurred to me regarding the story about Hiram being Indian and taking the name of the Pierce family he worked for, and the story that Martha Angeline was an Indian baby left with the Pierce family because her mother died. Maybe they are connected??? Any thoughts? Well, that's all my brain can deal with tonight. Thanks for the help, Jean
